OK so I am thinking about using Google voicemail because I like the idea of being able to see who each voicemail is from and independently choose which to listen to instead of having to listen to each one to get to the one you want. Also I like the idea of getting the messages transcribed and emailed or texted to me. I realize that the transcription is not perfect but I nice feature... I looked onto fusion visual voicemail and like the interface and widget but after 30 days the transcriptions cost. At this point I'm not too fond of the Google voice interface and I wish it had a widget. Anyone else use Google voice or other visual voicemail? What are your thoughts?

I was curious do people give their google voice number for people to call OR do people use their regular number and have voicemail set up to use google. I went to see if my verizon number was available as a google voice number but it wasnt. I have my default voicemail set to google voice. If I had people call my google voice number and had that as one of my 5 family and friends, would these calls be FREE? Is there a way besides telling all my contacts my number changed and giving them my google voice number, that I can forward all the calls on my cell phone to my google voice number. I know if I dont answer my phone, it will go to google voicemail.

Also what is the difference by it dialing through google voice or dialing through verizon. If I choose the option to dial out through google and put the number it dials in my list of five friends and familys, does this mean I basically get free out going calls when I call people in my contacts?

If I would have people message me and I message them through google sms instead of my regular phone number, I would still need to pay the $20 for unlimited text messaging because these would count towards my phone - correct? I normally text 1000-2000 messages a month.

I haven't given out my GV # to many, no need to so far, I just use the VM service w/ my vzw #.

Existing cell #'s aren't available for GV. So far, you can't port your # to GV (yet- it may come eventually.)

If I had people call my google voice number and had that as one of my 5 family and friends, would these calls be FREE?

I believe so... but try it to be sure.

No. Voicemails to your vzw # can be set to reroute to GV, but only calls to your GV# can be 'switchboarded' to other #'s (cell, home landline, work, etc.)

I know if I dont answer my phone, it will go to google voicemail.

Yes.

Also what is the difference by it dialing through google voice or dialing through verizon.

Technically, your phone (vzw #) is calling your GV #, which then calls your contact. The GV app does this seamlessly.

If I choose the option to dial out through google and put the number it dials in my list of five friends and familys, does this mean I basically get free out going calls when I call people in my contacts?

I believe that you would want to set your GV # as one of your F&F #'s. That way, VZW sees your calls going to/from that #. They don't see that GV is rerouting it. I don't have F&F so you may need to experiment.

If I would have people message me and I message them through google sms instead of my regular phone number, I would still need to pay the $20 for unlimited text messaging because these would count towards my phone - correct?

I don't think so, GV sms is web-based and doesn't use your cell connection. They should all be free. I don't use it though, so again- experiment and check your bill to be sure.

Do those of you who use it get that "please input the number you are trying to call" or something similar to that? I have a personalized voicemail for my top callers but my wife gets that weird message. Is there something I'm not doing right? I'd love for it to go directly to her customized voicemail greeting.

TheGreen, you seem to be pretty knowledgeable about GV. Any chance you'd know the answer to the attached post?

For two months now, I've been using google voice to dial out. I added that number it calls (which has not changed) to my pick 5 plan, and the calls I make are all included. I also added my gv number to the list, so incoming calls are also included. The *sad* thing for me is that the other 3 numbers on my pick 5 are the only people I ever make/receive calls to/from, so I'm not really accomplishing anything! But, I can tell you that it works.
