I'm going to take a guess at why it wouldn't be able to...

The pins inside the connector are specifically laied out to support HDMI out. Our incredibles are laid out to suppot RCA out.

So unless there are pins there to support it, it's not going to work.

Usb is a pin configuration standard. The pins are the same between the galaxy and the incredible (and all other phones with the same plug). The difference will be in the software or elsewhere in the hardware, but not in the usb port itself...

No. The actual USB connection is standard (4 pins, ground, two data, and power). If you look at your Incredible's connection, there are MORE than four pins. HTC crammed more pins on the same connector. It's still compatible with all other microUSB connections and still allows for RCA out with the extra pins when used with the special HTC cable.

Samsung did the same thing, except their extra pins do HDMI and not RCA. If you tried it on the Incredible (assuming the extra pins line up properly between the manufacturers) then you would be putting out analog RCA signals down HDMI pins. Could damage something.

Are you sure Samsung has additionally placed pins in a dual-use port like the Incredible? I get why HTC did it since it's analog video. But HDMI is purely digital. It's conceivable that you could send a digital stream over the data +/- wires that could be parsed by a chip in the hdmi plug. Or mabye not.

That's very possible. I gave them the benefit of the doubt since it'd be more expensive (in my mind) to have hardware that can handle USB and HDMI throughput on the same pins. Seemse cheaper to me to use easily acquired hardware and give it separate pins.

But I could be wrong. Either way, you can't get HDMI out on the Incredible.

I'm sure my hdtv does a far better job scaling the image if I use the composite input. The point is having native hd output in a widescreen format, a pure digital signal, and the convenience of the widely available hdmi standard.

Agreed. It's sorta funny. Many people (including myself) have made the mistake of buying a new and improved 1080p scaling DVD player so that we could get the best quality movies possible. All the while, not realizing that the HDTVs we were purchasing would HAVE to upscale natively, otherwise they would have a bunch of blank pixels. One could argue that the DVD player would be better at it, but by and large is not the case.

Anyway, it would be cool if HTC used the same drivers and such on the DInc as the EVO. That would at least address the software side of this quandary and would make some 'efficiency' sense for HTC.

Still, I'm not sure what HD video i would ever have on my phone. I guess 720p videos once we get the OTA and perhaps YouTube.

Here is the thing about the tV out though, the picture is sized wrong, has the wrong dimensions, and is not centered. Maybe there is a device out there that could go between my phone and tv that could at least fix these issues...

I don't get the relevance. That cable was already mentioned earlier in the thread. We know it can do RCA out, but the Incredible cannot to HDMI out.

+1...Most modern flat panel televisions will do a better job of scaling/up-converting a signal better than some 49.00 Taiwanese piece of garbage. If you want a true scaler, look at Anchor Bay Technologies and their DVDO devices, or look at Key digital, they make tried and true, although expensive, scalers and other video products. Seriously though, it is a freakin' phone. Save your video to your computer and hook up that way. Also, just some FYI, an standard consumer use HDMI cable has 19 conductors under it's jacket. For phones to pull this off, there has to be a lot more going on under the hood. Like a dedicated HDMI output, or an HDMI output with a handful of other pins thrown in for charging/USB data transfer. Just my thoughts.

Very true, but mostly concerning inexpensive DVD players. Higher end DVD players will have technology built in that do a better job of video scaling, except when the most sophisticated displays are concerned. Higher end players will have the scaling managed by the likes of DCDi by Faroudja, and other technologies. All of which will do a better job of scaling, and deinterlacing video than most displays costing under $2000.00 or so. Check out the video specs on displays made by Runco, Fujitsu, and NEC. Amazing displays. Just to stay on topic though, a phone, at least not now, can't produce video that blows me away.

Yep, but think of it this way. HDMI baluns that transfer HDMI over cat5e, and cat 6 normally require two runs of wire to achieve full 1080p video. They are using all 16 conductors of these two wires, and still have to have chips at both ends. One to down-convert, and one to up-convert the signals.. I just don't see this happening over a single USB to HDMI cable just yet. The largest concern is HDCP and all of that other BS that goes along with it. Source devices, and dispalys each have to have a lot going on inside to complete the HDMI "digital handshake" to display video, as well as audio from source to display at the highest resolutions.
