Prime vs Vigor vs Spyder/RAZR

Is there a legitimate contender for Prime coming to Verizon? My concern that VZW's Prime could be delayed (CTIA Unpacked cancellation, possible last minute ICS issues, no CDMA FCC approval, my track record waiting for phones and my general paranoia) has me wondering if not Prime, what else is in the near future?

Personally, I'm very skeptical of any HTC phone after my experience with Thunderbolt, which was my first and so far only smartphone. But so many people seem to love their DIncs. Same with folks still rocking OG Droids. It appears both manufacturers are coming out with new devices, both with VZW LTE, which is my number one "must have".

I was expecting Vigor to be very near release by now, but haven't heard much about it. I really don't know if there have been rumors about Spyder/Droid RAZR's release. If Prime's release get's pushed beyond November, I suppose I'd be most interested in Spyder/RAZR.

Those that followed Bionic's pre-release thread, may recall this post by YodaDroid on August 30th:

"I can say this, there are three phones that VZW is really excited about for the remainder of this year.

Prime isn't one of them.

And neither is the Vigor".

The other day I made a post on the Moto Spyder board and Yoda gave this statement:

"Not really at liberty to discuss much on this one.

Let's just say the powers that be are WELL aware of what the market dynamics and timing are for the other devices.

Also - THIS is the device VZW is the most excited about. *hint* *hint*"

Yoda was referring to Spyder/RAZR as the device VZW is "most excited about". Now Yoda doesn't appear to be a fan of Prime, based on things he has said. But he does appear to have knowledge of things going on at VZW and with Moto's devices. I also imagine VZW probably would be more jazzed about a device they can put bloat on rather than one without.

I'm curious what everyone else has to say about all this. Please keep the flaming to a minimum. I have thin skin. Also, I REALLY want Prime, I just have horrible luck and am probably dooming us all with my desire. :(

The event was delayed but many in the know (droid-life, etc) have been getting tips about a possible 10-27 launch and most likely verizon would have announced it tues but not available for preorders for a few weeks after so now maybe it will be announced and available for preorders right away? You ever think maybe it isn't going to be called the prime which is why yoda said that?? Not to mention verizon wont bloat up the prime so therefore less money they make so it makes sense they wouldn't be hyping it up that much. look how excited they were about the thunderbolt and how much of a flop that turned out to be. Just sit back and wait I'm sure all will be revealed soon enough.

How does Verizon make enough money off Bloatware (That many of us despise, and you'd think subsequently shun) to make that more of a focus than just having "clean" phones to increase the number of subscribers?

I would think VZW's main focus would be delivering fast, minimum bloatware devices that would bring and retain as many subscribers as possible.

Hell, I cant even name the aps that make up most of my bloatware.

Anyway, back on track. I packaged my Bionic up this weekend to be returned to VZW and am awaiting the release of the next batch of phones too. I am hoping for something really cutting edge to use until my next upgrade. I am hoping the Prime will be all it's cracked up to be, and if not, I will patiently await the next super phone.

Fortunately, I have my trusty HTC Incredible to go back to since the Bionic didnt work out.

It is amazing how many people say the same thing about their Incredibles. It must be a helluva device. Perhaps HTC's blip with TB was an anomaly.

Not too familiar with the thunderbolt, never owned one. But HTC has been making awesome devices for years now. I've owned an HTC touch, Touch PRO, evo, evo shift, and an evo 3d. Never had any complaints about these devices other than their rather large footprint. But as far as hardware and software, these devices have been outstanding.

Dinc is better than TB on battery. But that's only because it's 3g phone. Compared to other similar 3G phones like DX, Fascinate, it's much worse on battery. It's not particularly strong at any thing other than build quality, Sense. DX has reception, call quality over Dinc, and Fascinate has screen, camera quality over Dinc. HTC is the worst maker when it comes to battery if you compare the phones in the same category.

As for Yoda's comments, I don't care thing about it. Unless he's a high level guy at VZW, there is no reason to take his words that what device VZW prefers seriously. He claimed Bionic would be nearly perfect best LTE device as Moto took such long time/effort to fine tune firmwares but we still see the huge list of Bionic bugs since launch. Even battery life he liked to boast doesn't seem any better than Charge.

The Prime unpack event was just postponed due to unexpected death of Steve Jobs, nothing more than that. There is nothing to indicate its launch is also delayed. I really don't see Spyder as device at the same level as Prime. Less qHD screen, overclocked 1.2Ghz OMAP4430, no ICS on board, etc. Vigor is more on par with Prime, but that 1620mAh battery doesn't give me any confidence on battery given their track record. Other than Prime, LG Revolution 2 with Vigor like spec plus 1850mAh battery has me interested most.

Because they get paid a certain amount for each app they place on the phone. Sort of like the bing scenario that happened on some androids.

I agree yoda was praising the bionic battery saying it was so good when in fact it is on par with the charge. I will believe it when it happens.

Because they get paid by companies to include thier software. Get paid a lot.

You and I may demand vanilla phones, but the buying public who outnumber the tech crowd 10000:1 don't care, or actually view bloat as favorable.

Hey look, it comes with Maddon preinstalled! Cool, check out CityID, that's awesome.

This reminds me when I worked at Best Buy many (many) moons ago. Computers used to come with all kinds of crap preinstalled... Still do I suppose, but I build my own now... First thing I always did after buying one was wipe it clean.

I pre-ordered the DInc and received it a day before it came out in stores. I still use the same one today - every day - almost every 5 minutes (I'm an addict). I have never been disappointed by it - AT ALL!

I purchased 3 batteries and a battery charger off ebay for $12 shipped. If it's not plugged in, I go through almost 2 full batteries a day. But I always have 2 more fully charged and ready to go. And the charger is awesome - glows pink while charging and blue when finished.

I am now rooted and have all the fun stuff on it. I use a launcher (GO) which is far better than HTC Sense. Really no need to replace it other than for 4G - so I am giving it to my wife.

The Prime is the only thing I will upgrade it with - or the Vigor but they are coming out so close to each other and I would rather have ICS.

I really don't see a contest between the 2 of these phone at all! The Razr/Spyder will be hyped to no extant and be the consumer darling of vzw going into the Holidays . The Prime will be for tech junkies, people like us, so don't expect a ton of marketing and Hype.

However, are we still blaming Steves death for the cancellation of the Samsung unpacked event? I really doubted at this point! Steves Funeral was Friday, the event was being held today (Tuesday) at CTIA, and the event as a whole is still going on!

My guess would be either...

1-ICS is not ready for Prime Time yet!

2- Samsungs event was littered with smack directed at Apple and the iphone! Which if it was, Samsung could have toned it down and concentrated on just talking about the Prime, and not talking smack!

3- VZW wants the Razr/Spyder announced First! Which as it turns out a Moto/Vzw event has been slatted to take place in NYC next week.

Anyones guess at this point.

You know, I really thought #1 (ICS not ready) was the reason, but the more I think about it, #3 (Moto release first) seems plausible.

Yea...the way its playing out, it looks like a Moto First type thing...Once this moto event passes we'll probably get a Prime announcement, and then a week later be able to grab it...So beginning of November if I had to guess.

Although nothing has been announced in the US, I also think that you can include the Revolution 2 in this group. It's been released in Korea as the Optimus...and it cruised through FCC in August. It looks like a beast!

LG Optimus LTE Officially Unveiled ( LG Revolution 2 ? )

I will bet you that it will be out before the holidays.

I'm interested in this phone too, just in case Nexus Prime turns out to be disappointing for me. Its spec is on par with Vigor, but it has larger battery and excellent IPS/HD non-pentile screen.

At this point, I'm heavily leaning towards the Prime over everything I've heard about so far that's in the pipeline ...

^^^this

The race is on for my $ and my love!
(Are we fickle? Damn straight! :))

Yeah, we took long journey for true super-phone on verizon since summer waiting on SGS2 that became vaporware. Nexus Prime is almost here. Now the main thread is getting flamed over battery comment from BMX. I think we are getting too impatient now, so acting like child ranting on christmas gifts! I will give Prime some time like a week or two for early reviews before jumping to conclusion.

There's some interesting devices in the pipeline for sure.

However, based on what we know so far, the Nexus Prime is the only one that has a strong chance of being a vanilla Android handset. However, we have to remember, the Nexus phones are for us, the "nerds" of the Android community. The Nexus has never been a big seller, because the general public likes UI overlays like Sense, TouchWiz, etc. They don't care if it takes Samsung 6 months to update to the latest version on their phone because of TouchWiz, only we care about that. The original Droid was the exception.

I must say though, I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit excited about Moto's event next week. The Spyder/RAZR/Droid HD has been of interest to me ever since it was pictured next to the Bionic.

And for those of you still complaining about Blur, you have obviously not seen the latest version running on devices like the D3 and Bionic. It's pretty much out of the way now, so that wouldn't deter me from buying a Moto phone.

I think my wife will end up with the Vigor. She wants to upgrade to the TB now, but I told her to hold off until we see what it's replacement will be like. For me, although I'm leaning heavily in favor of the Prime, it might end up coming down to choosing between the Prime and the RAZR(or whatever).
