Title = Short version lol

Longer Version:

I got my Hero no more than 3 days ago, and the first time I ever looked at the awake percentage it said 75%. I then updated my phone to 1.56.651.2 and now it is at 100%. I have been looking since last night on how to retain my battery life and make sure my awake percentage is below 100% even by 1% i still feel like id be doing something right, but im not. I have done everything in your guide besides for turning off my GPS... Lets just say there are a lot of thieves where I come from and I need that for my family locator. Yes I do have Handcent for that message issue but that didnt lower any percentage at all.

Anywho, that is everything I can think off. Idk why it is STILL 100% but everything i have done didnt drop awake by even 1%. I have even changed all settings, restarted the phone, and nothing happened. Do I need to do a hard reset? if i do, how do i do that and what happens when i do? Does that require me setting the phone back to factory defaults?

Any help will be appreciated. I love this phone, and android OS. I kinda wish I can just get rid of everything that is HTC Sense UI and just update my android version but ya know how HTC is lol. And sprint loves to add their apps too so thats also annoying.

Please help :(

EDIT: also the reason I am posting this is because tonight I went out to a movie and my phone was at full battery and on lock screen the entire night. It died in my pocket within 2 hours of the movie. And i had it on charge the entire night before movies. So I REALLY need this to work, or ill just have to take the phone back :(

I have hard reset my Hero and it was still at 100%, then when I connected the USB it went down to 64%. Then when I installed Handcent Sms it went to 69%. Then I went to messages and turned off all the notifications and retstarted my phone. Now its at 83% and JUST went up to 84%, now 85%.

The only application that is installed is handcent sms. All the settings are changed like I did and now it just went down to 81% lol.

I just changed the google data and now its at 88%.

Now I am doing a soft reset to see what happens. And now its at 100%. And lowers down fast.

I think I fixed my problem with a hard reset as well as the Handcent Sms applications. I'll guess what ill do is go through all of my applications and see what the problem is.

But i have a question. Does Mobile use more battery power than wifi?

Now it went back up to 100% after I uploaded Advanced Task Manager 4.0.1 through HTC Hero Sync. I even removed it, and it is still at 100%... I just installed Spare Parts again now and under Partial wake usage/since last unplugged it says "Android System" and "Dialer". Does ATM 4.0.1 load dialer or something?

If it's at 79% it means that it IS sleeping.

No, you shouldn't have to plug it in, unplug it and then let it sleep.

Sleeping is when you aren't using your phone and when it isn't running any tasks. For example, my screen could be off but I could be listening to music. Because the phone is still running it would cause my phone not to sleep.

If I used my phone for 5 minutes and then let the phone sleep (i.e. screen off and not doing anything) for 5 minutes, my awake time should then be 50%.

I'm willing to bet your problem was with an app (specifically shazam). When you check spare parts the blue bar on the name of the app it shows you which apps are being used on the phone the most. IF you have 100% awake issues, the blue bar will completely fill the app name (but make sure you've let your phone sleep).

Well when I uninstalled that task manager it started to go back down when i unplugged it. Its down to 50%. Im gonna install the task manager again and see if it was that at all.

And I do know what sleep means, i was just getting confused as to why my phone wouldnt sleep at all lol.

EDIT:
It wasnt that app. So i think i fixed it. Maybe it wouldnt sleep cus i had it plugged in after i did a hardset

Think you meant to post the last one in the rooted thread...

If you think it's fixed, great! Not to be a buzzkill, but it wouldn't have killed the battery in your phone during a movie if it was fixed. :p

yea i meant to post that last one in the rooted thread lol. And it died at the movies before I did a hard reset. I fixed it when i got back home. Im going through all 41 apps right now and see if one or more of them did it. If it was Shazam then i wont even bother with that. I was gonna remove it cus i never used it anyways lol.

Something doesn't sound right.

First of all, I'd advise you not using Adv Task Manager. Once I stopped using that, my battery life has been significantly better. It has settings that make it want to keep scanning your runnings apps/proceses and it can kill your battery and force high awake times. Make sure you check settings on it to ensure there aren't any AUTOMATIC settings turned on.

Also, Facebook app was killing my friend's phone because it kept getting stuck trying to receive notifications. Since it's not showing up on your PARTIAL WAKE STATUS on Spare Parts, it's probably not the case, but keep that one in mind.

I also have started using Close Everything occassionally (once every day or two) to make sure things are ok. It doesn't actively try to close things, just anything that may be causing problems with the phone sleeping.

My Awake time is at around 10% now and I've got a few of the same apps as you.

How much free memory do you have on your phone? When you open App Manager, how much does it say is free? I've noticed if I have less than 30MB free, my phone seems to go nuts. I try to keep my memory free around 50MB, if possible. This includes clearing caches. I use Cachemate (Root required) which clears all caches with one click.

The other thing I was say is don't check your phone's status so much. Let the darn thing sleep. Try to let your phone do its thing for a while, don't keep plugging/unplugging it because you're trying to see what the AWAKE time does. The longer your phone is unpluged, the lower your AWAKE time should be. The inverse is also true, since certain processes have to run once you unplug your phone.

Try leaving it alone for a while (at least a few hours) and see what it does.

also remember, if you ahve teh phone plugged into the USB of a computer it won't sleep.

+1

Turn it off, turn it back on. And keep it unplugged from the computer. Let it sit for an hour or two, and then check your awake time. Should be at less than 15% by that point if something's not keeping it awake. Make sure your email isn't set to check for messages every 15 seconds or something like that. Mine's at 5 minutes, and that works fine for me. Others are using 15 minutes.

This worked for me even after the update I was staying at 100% awake time. After I reprovisioned the phone it sleeps well (stays in the single to low double digits depending on use). here's a link to another thread on this site.

http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/24470-my-100-awake-issue-fixed.html

Goto post #4 and start at the line that says "Press the green phone key..." YOU WILL need the MSL (Master Subsidy Lock code) "Six digit number". If you do not have that six digit number you may have to call Sprint and have them walk you through a reprovisioning. Do not use what is posted, it is for example purposes only. Read the guide closely so you can write down the numbers you will need to put back in after you put the all 0 (zeros) in and reboot your phone. Like I said read, maybe even print out that post before you start. I would write the numbers down on that print out I believe you just need to change your phone number and MSID to the zeros (atleast thats what I did). If this seems to much or you do not have your MSL then call sprint and ask them to walk you through it. Occasionally (maybe once a month) I still have a battery drain that is unexplained but for the most part I sleep. I do not have near the apps you have either. I would still try the reprovisioning. Reprovisioning is not like a reset. You should not lose any data on the phone but stranger things have happened.

I read that before I joined the website, but I felt that there was a different way to fix it. Like everyone said, it was probably Shazam. All I did was Hard reset, and reinstalled certain apps I liked and ones i didnt. I excluded the shazam and i am good to go. No more 100% wake for me thank god! Well not god, you guys here at android forums :D
