Root The easiest way to root your Android for gingerbread! :)

Dear all,

I recently bought an LGP500 and im lovin it..!!!! Came across this forum and found that there are heaps of developments thats taking place in this platform! Really wanna thank each and everyone for their time and effort in trying to improvise on the OS.

I came across [UNOFFICIAL][ROM][stable:6.5.5,testing:6.6] CyanogenMod 7.1-RC1 (Android 2.3.4) and i really want to install it (or in that case, and good GB OS) over my froyo. I have been through a lot of threads on flashing and rooting, but im still very unclear about the whole process. Im not a computer geek, and all these jargon kinda make me feel like a bozo .

As a last resort, im trying out this thread. Would really appreciate if someone could spare some time and provide a simple walkthrough from - (a) backing up the original OS, (b) on through flashing and rooting, (c) to installing this custom ROM and (d) finally restoring it if needed for warranty purposes. Im pretty sure there are a lot of people like me who has difficulty in understanding all these processes and missing out some great developments.

I hope everyone understands this and wont consider this as one of those spam/duplicate threads, where the same Qs are repeated again and again...!

I will give it a go. I'll also try to explain what you are doing for you to understand.

So, we'll start by rooting your device. The application "gingerbreak" will do the trick. Download it here. Follow the instructions: make sure that USB Debugging is selected in Settings/Applications/Development.

Your device should now be rooted: that's great! You can use Titanium Backup to backup some settings and even applications. It's useful but not necessary. You can always go back to your current phone's firmware by using KDZ, it is really simple and I'm sure someone will tell you how to get the correct firmware and flash it if you need it. You can, however, have some problems using this tool, so I don't recommend messing around with it if you don't know what you are doing. (As an example, my phone would only boot in Emergency Mode, I couldn't even access the recovery! I fixed it but I got a little scared.)

You should also sync your contacts, I save them on my Google Account so it's easier. It's not the default option on this phone though, so you should find a way to export your contacts if you didn't save them as Google contacts.

Now, you should open up the market and search for "rom manager". You will have to install Clockworkmod Rom Manager, it will be used to install a custom recovery on your phone. Open up the application and select the first option, it should be "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery".

Next, you will need to download two .zip packages to place them on the SD card of your phone. One is the ROM itself, download it here. The other are the Google apps, you'll need those to have the market on your phone. Download here. (Both of these are from the link you posted.)

Ok, so turn off your device and reboot in the recovery mode. Do so by holding the home button, the lower volume button and the button you usually press to boot your phone. There is also a button in ROM Manager to do so.

In the recovery, you can navigate the menus using the volume buttons, the menu button and the back button. Start by selecting "backup and restore" and then "backup".

When it's done, you should "wipe data/factory reset", "wipe cache partition", and then in "advanced" you should "clear the dalvik cache".

Select "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard" and find the ROM you downloaded. When it's done, you should reboot your phone normally. There it is, gingerbread!

It's not done though. Reboot in recovery again. Go in "advanced" and select something like "fix package permissions". Then, select the "install zip from sdcard" and "choose zip from sdcard" option again. Find the gapps you downloaded (it stands for Google Apps).

There you go, everything is ready to be configured again

Many-2 Thanks for ur post. I exactly followed what you posted here and the result is very nice my mobile is now cyanogenmod7 kernel: franco's v18 + 2.6.32.42. Every thing was brilliant but I have one problem in my gallery 1 folder which contain 80 files shows only 27. i checked it through file manager there it shows hardly 10 files and they too are unable to play. All these files were smoothly played on my previous stock version of Lg P500 i.e 2.2.1. Also these are .wmv files which are not showung in gallery and in MOBO PLAYER they played with some glitch. Help me plz???????? i already unmounted or mounted my sd card.

Try transferring them to your computer and playing them on there. If it doesn't work, they are probably corrupted files. I don't know why that would happen though, maybe an issue with your SD card. If it does work, it might be a bug with the ROM. Trying other media players might work.

thank you so much for your step-by-step guide! the process went flawlessly until i installed the ROM and chose restart in recovery mode... and now it's stuck on the LG logo screen what did i do wrong???

and pressing the button combo for recovery mode is not working...

edit: took battery out, had things restored in recovery mode, but i still don't understand why other people got it and i don't. please help

Whether or not we can play a video file on our phone is determined by 3 factors:
1. codec.
2. resolution
3. bitrate

1. P500 does not have native support for all codecs. mpeg4, DiVX and XViD work for sure. Although some sites claim that we can play H263 and H264 videos, my phone cant.

There are several video players in the market that install their own codec packs that let you play any codec and any format. But when playing videos using the new codecs, I always find that audio and video goes out of sync.

2. The maximum resolution supported by the P500 is 480x320. So all videos of this resolution or lower will definately play (if the other 2 criteria are met too).

3. If the bitrate is too high, then the phone cant play it as it just doesn't have the processing power.

The instructions seem nice and straightforward but I must be useless, I can't even get past one of the 1st steps. The link where it says get gingerbreak works for me, I saved it onto my desktop, I have winzip but don't know how to even get it to my phone. I can't even see any instructions.
Think it must be time for a rethink about all this rooting business if I can't even figure out how to get gingerbreak onto my phone....

Unzip and copy the gingerbreak apk file to the root of your mem card, then open thinkfree office (or if you've installed any file manager from the market, you can use that too, ES file manager is the one I use, Astro is good too, the default OI file manager is crap), find the gingerbreak apk, click on it to install, then follow the rest of the instructions. You might want to disable any anti virus apps you have, there is a chance it may interfere (dont worry, the app is harmless, its not a virus).

If you can't find gingerbreak through your file manager, try using LG app installer. It should find any apks in your mem card, and you should be able to install it from there, but it doesn't always find all the apks. You can unmount and remount your mem card or restart your phone and then LG app installer should be able to find the apk (that is if it didn't find it the first time).

NOTE: If you've updated to official gingerbread, you cant root using gingerbreak.

Thanks for all your help guys....I got gingerbread on the phone, started it up (sd card mounted, debugging ticked, formatted sd card...) and after half an hour still nothing, just kept saying it was doing its thing but to no avail. Your last little note about official gingerbread might be the key here. I updated from froyo to gingerbread through the LG site so you're saying it won't work. So can I change my version of gingerbread to an unofficial one to get around this? Thanks for the heads up on that too, very handy

Novice is right....haha..maybe a bit less. I was so stoked I even got Gingerbreak onto my phone only to be told that an LG upgrade to GB would stop me.
sigh....be easier just to give someone $100 bucks just to do it for me I reckon.

I have done everything, as mentioned in the above method. After all the installations are done, when I started my phone, I am unable to connect to the network...Its giving an error message (Error searching for network) pls help me...
