Hello. I've owned a BB Curve for two years, and I like it. Before that, I had a Danger Sidekick for over four years. I liked it, too, but eventuallly left because of constant service issues.
I've been with T-Mobile since 2003, and I'm not really looking to change carriers. My contract is up in April, but I've been informed that I can upgrade now, if I choose to. And that's why I'm here...
My wife has a MyTouch 3G, and I've had a chance to use it. It's a very nice device. I like the Android market concept, and even though it's not close to the iPhone App Store in what it offers, it's growing. I believe the MyTouch 1.2 is coming very soon--possibly tomorrow. Or, I could wait until April and get the Nexus 1 (the early upgrade doesn't work for the Nexus). Or...I can just keep my BB 8900.
I've always had a physical keyboard. The Curve was a step down from the Sidekick, which has the best keyboard in the industry, but I got used to it, and it serves me well. But I don't want to be a physical keyboard bigot. I believe I could get used to a touch keyboard, and maybe I'd like the Swype system, rumored to be on the MyTouch 1.2.
A more serious issue is auto-text. The Sidekick had it; the BB has it; Android doesn't. This is pretty close to a deal-breaker for me, since I'm an auto-text power user. The prospect of text entry without auto-text is not pleasant.
There are a few apps on my BB that aren't available in Android market, as far as I know. One is the Barnes & Noble ebook reader. Another is the multi-IM client JiveTalk.
On the other hand, Android seems to me to be a more progressive OS, whereas the BB OS feels a little threadbare. There are still constant memory leak issues on BBs, and in general the interface seems clunky, to me. Even switching from the Sidekick early in 2008 I felt that I was taking a step backward.
Another factor is the camera. The camera on my 8900 is pretty good. Although I haven't experimented that much with it, the camera on my wife's MyTouch doesn't seem to be as good. Aside from having no flash, the photos don't look as sharp. Photo quality depends a lot on lens quality, and it may be that the MyTouch lens just isn't so great. I don't know how the Nexus camera is. I know it's 5 MP but that's irrelevant, for the most part. Beyond a certain point, more MP don't mean better quality. They just mean bigger photos. Since I seldom, if ever, print photos that I take with my phone, 3.2 MP is big enough. But I do want good photos.
So that's my intro, and that's where my thinking is. I should have titled this post "on the fence."
