And VZW, since there own corporate reps tell me VZW has taken a zero tolerance policy on rooting and custom roms, due to repair costs they eat and non-contract wifi tethering.

Go to a VZW corporate store and the manager will give the same response, but perhaps worded a little differently of course.

Agreed. VZW doesn't want to allow unlocking. The solution isn't to try and make it impossible though as that only leads the higher likelyhood someone bricks a device as the hackers find ways around it. Just make it easy and say there is ZERO support or returns once it's related to that. The more straight forward and easy and allowed the process is the less and less likely anyone will mess things up hardware wise or software wise attempting to do it.

Try and lock it up like fort knox though and they are just going to try and work around it and break things and expect returns. They shouldn't, but they will.

The tethering stuff is just stupid normal greed. But they are trying to get everyone on capped plans which solves that in the end anyhow.

Just an aside that not everyone knows - are you aware that there is only one chipset available that has a faster GPU? And that they would have to switch the entire chipset to go to a new GPU?

They aren't separate parts like they are on a PC - the GPU and CPU are integrated. So, if there was ANY reason whatsoever why they couldn't use the same chips as the Galaxy S 2 (and there could be a lot of reasons - cost, supply, driver issues, incompatibilities with the rest of the system, battery life...), then the OMAP 4460 was the next best thing.

It's primary purpose is use the measured pressure to rough in your altitude for GPS placement/lock.

I'm not pissed at the CPU option. That's why I said "it makes me more curious", not "Curse them! Curse them! Those freaking jerks!" a la our very own r4yN. :p

I understand why they went the way they did. It was just a curious thing that I will never know the reason for. As long as my videos, browsing, swiping, and other mundane things are completely lag-free, I couldn't care less what they throw in there.

I am hoping that increased storage cloud use will force carriers to improve the usage terms. I predict 2012 will be a battle year for this. Consumers vs carriers.

I know I had brought this up a few 100 pages back, but does anyone know besides a docking station that the devise probably comes with if there are other accessories for the GNex? Like the ones for the Razr. The HD docking station thing that was shown off is pretty killer, would love to see the GNex come with something like that!

Did you hear that GNex is coming with a docking station? That would be great if it does.

Accessories are one of the big advantages to buying the Moto RAZR. You just gotta know there will be all kinds of cool gizmos and gadgets for it. Not being familiar with Nexus devices, I'm curious to know if there will be a nice selection of accessories. I really want a car dock.

what bs-ness? android 5.7.39 isn't going to make it that different :p it is what it is.

Yes but running a buggy firmware with "debug" mode on will slow it down.

I'd like to see benchmarks (not that they mean all that much to me) being run on the latest firmware with no debugging.

How can you trust benchmarks that were run while the device was busy stopping to look for a bug in every nook and cranny?

That's total BS.

If VZW forces my hand, and offers no subsidy on GNEx, it might not be a deal breaker for me...as long as I can stay off contract and keep my unlimited data. I am not independently wealthy but I can certainly swing paying full price for a GNex. I know that isn't the case for some, like students for example.

They would almost be doing me a favor in setting me up for a subsidized next gen device in 2012. But sure, I will most like buy GNex with the subsidy if it is eligible. It just won't be a deal killer if not.

I am in the same boat, that would be what I did as well.

Anyone read this story?
Samsung Galaxy Nexus/ Google Ice Cream Sandwich launch points to signs of trouble in Androidland Unwired View

It's pretty bleak (CK, you reading this?), but points to the Google/Verizon tensions some of us have speculated are going on. Related to that, has anyone noticed that all of the leaks (except the Verizon Cellebrite) pointing to a G-Nex on Verizon have come from Google or Samsung? We have the subtle flashes of "Verizon Wireless" in the dropped down notification screen in the unveiling, we have the pictures of the G-Nex with Verizon's LTE logo on it that were subtly displayed during the unveiling. We have the Samsung rep Facebook that the G-Nex will come to Verizon first, only to then retract that statement. And finally we have the message from "Android Market" asking: "Verizon Wireless customers, Galaxy Nexus or Droid RAZR?"

If Verizon were feeling snubbed by Google and getting cold feet, it kind of looks to me like Google and Samsung are trying to put public pressure on Verizon to take the G-Nex (by making enough public "slips" that it would look poorly on Verizon for announcing they won't be offering the phone).

I think it's been asked but I haven't seen any response but: does the Gnex have Gorilla glass or some equivalent?

i'm pretty sure i saw somewhere that GG has been confirmed, but i can't put my hands on the source...

edit: actually, after doing some searching, it looks like there's no confirmation. and, some are speculating that, because of the curved glass, it won't be GG...

One very possible scenario is that the GNex is released to be used on Verizon, but Verizon offers no subsidy. So, the question is, do you go for the $300 RAZR or the $6-700 GNex?

I figure this is worse case in the end as whatever is going on, if it is at all related to a squabble between Samsung/Google and VZW I am guessing at this point they can go ahead with this and not do any more damage. Unless of course all the squabbling is over BL unlock and openness and such and they go ahead with this on a fully unlocked open device.

I wouldn't put either situation past google though as they essentially got the FCC to more or less agree to enforce such device on network allowances on VZW who won the TV auction to build this LTE network.

On the razr forum, YodaDroid is hinting (in that super obnoxious way he does) that RAZR is dropping sooner than November 3.

I hope someone got their wires crossed on the Oct. 27 thing, and that RAZR drops then. The sooner it drops, the sooner attention can be focused on the Nexus. Also, it would fit well if October is for RAZR, because then maybe November will be for Nexus.

Where that leaves the horrendously named Rezound, I don't know, and I don't think I care.

I don't know if they'd do this simply because that leaves them looking silly saying that it's coming in November on their home page. (not that they haven't ever looked silly before )

Side note - I abhor the name Rezound.

No subsidy on the GNex and I'll be going for the Rezound for sure. With Christmas coming up and various other birthdays and such there is no way to do a $600-$700 phone till next year. I'd be very very sad.

I do love the specs from the guys at edgaget though. Reading more about this beast makes me drool a little.

proof the phone was running in debug mode please? why would they show off a phone if it was running slower? a recent build date does not mean its debug..

It might be earlier. O2 uk confirmed that the razr will be out here on the 1st November.
