Folks --

I am trying to update my Shine Plus to 2.3 but am having a hard time even getting started. All the drivers are installed on my computer, as is LG PC Suite 4.

When I start up the LG Mobile Support Tool it goes through a long process of trying to connect to the phone, then I get the red bar with "Start Updating". I click on it and the "Phone Update" window opens -- then gets stuck on "Analyzing your PC environment: Checking for whether the LG PC-Sync program is running" for quite some time (2-3 mins, progress bar at 25%).

It then goes on to "Checking the connection with the cell phone" for another 4-5 minutes (progress bar goes to 30%) and fails with "Problem with communication between cell phone and PC" and a recommendation about pulling the battery, etc.

Following the recommendation does nothing. I have tried two different computers and a few different USB ports on each one, with no luck.

Any ideas?
TIA.

FYI, I updated my original phone and I had a bunch of problems (worse is no voice control). Telus sent me a replacement refurb phone. I updated it and as far as I can tell, I have the same problems with the refurb phone (no voice control).

I have spoken with both LG and Telus, they say there is no way to fix but to send the phone back to telus.

Telus is going to send me another replacement refurb phone. I think I will just leave it as 2.1 and not update it until they resolve all the issues.

Their update software is a mess... It works for some, doesn't for others. What I recommend is to do a full factory reset (Hold Home + Vol down + Power while phone is off) and it'll hard reset the phone. Keep in mind though, this will wipe all your data! (Except SD card) so it's very important that you back everything up first.

Try updating after doing this... Also, was your phone rooted? Did you install anything custom like recovery or one of dsi's ROMs?

Also, are you certain all your drivers are properly configured? Try checking your device manager in Windows to make sure you have no drivers missing while the phone is plugged in (Yellow interrogation)

There should also be an option for the phone to be Mass storage only in settings/storage, make sure that's unchecked. Otherwise the phone won't connect its adb or modem drivers.

I tried doing the hard reset. I now get slightly farther in the process -- it gives me a warning that upgrading the software will result in loss of my data, etc. -- but it eventually says "Can't connect to server" and stops cold.

No problems with the drivers or Mass Storage setting and I haven't installed any custom ROMs either.

The only thing I can think of is that I am using the phone on Fido (not Telus) but I can't imagine that this would cause problems ... ?

So frustrating. The sad thing is that this is a good phone for the money but the support is abysmal.

I'm using Fido with this phone, it's not an issue here. And yeah, support is horrible for this phone... Only thing I can suggest is installing a custom ROM, but then again it might not work because your radio wouldn't be updated. So it's a gamble.

Ugh. Now the LG Mobile Update Tool just crashes when I try to start it. I wish there was some way to do this update without using any LG software ...

The radio, as in the FM radio? I can live without that.

Which ROM do I choose, and where do I go for step-by-step instructions?

Actually no, the radio is what's used to control wifi, 3G, voice, etc. everything related to the wireless signal. Without the proper radio, your phone might be rendered unusable.

We currently have Jiilik who's working with me trying to solve this issue. If you want to try the Gingerbread ROM, head to the All things root forum (Top of this list is the link).

You need to follow the steps in "Shine plus custom ROMs finally here" to install the recovery. Once that's done, you need either the stock Nandroid image I created (Which is in custom Gingerbread recovery thread) or the custom Gingerbread ROM which is a flashable zip.

It's not for the faint of heart, but I'll try and help you out as best as I can. Keep in mind though:

If this breaks your phone, I am not responsible and you are aware that this has risks associated with it! ;)

Well, radio only controls the cell portion - wifi, GPS, bluetooth all seem to work, so they are running using kernel drivers. It's literally only those things that use the SIM card that are broken.

Possibly because they only changed that portion in the radio to support the new Gingerbread implementation.

Jiilik, can you pull a list of what's in /dev/block please and PM me the info? Thanks!

Just thought it would be a good idea to follow up with this thread. After many many attempts I was finally able to update my phone. The whole process seems very touchy, sensitive to which USB port is used, the nature of the network connection, etc. After a "server update" on LG's end it suddenly "just worked" and I now have a Gingerbread Shine Plus.

Wifi, GPS and the FM radio all work for me, as does the "personal hotspot". The Nuance voice control does not work, and I understand this is common (but unfortunate) No idea about Bluetooth, as I don't use that at all.

Overall I'm not terribly impressed with the way this was rolled out. It'd definitely discourage me from going with an LG phone in the future.

I have never been able to connect to Lg pc suite either.. and it only connects to lg mobile update tool when the phone is turned off ( I'm not sure if that's normal) I'm not impressed with lg phones either its the second time ive gotten burned by them but its the last haha... they make great TV's though lol
