I recently purchased an HTC Hero and expected to be able to use it to connect my computer to the internet as I did with my last phone... unfortunately the computer isn't recognizing my phone as a mobile device. I spoke w/ an HTC techy and he said my operating system
(XP - service pack 3) isn't compatible with the phone.

What is the easiest way to fix this problem? any information would be appreciated.

Get your drivers from here:
HTC Hero driver for 32-bit Windows 7: HTC_Driver_32.zip: http://depositfiles.com/files/yd61xorii
HTC Hero driver for 64-bit Windows 7: HTC_Driver_64.zip: http://depositfiles.com/files/yz4rg8u3i

And follow homies instructions here...

My works perfectly fine on Windows 7 Pro x64. If you want the instructions for Win7 x64 just post back. Don't PM bcuz I haven't a clue as to where to get the PM. I'm just a poster.

EDIT:
Ooops.....I forgot to mention I am in US and Sprint is my carrier.

The HTC techy was speaking with forked tongue. I have XP service pack 3 and it works fine with my Hero for all I want to do. How does the problem manifest itself?

I am a bit confused about what you want to do. Do you want to use the phone as a modem for the computer, which is called tethering?

If so the answer will depend if you have a Hero on Sprint, in which case this has been blocked. I understand you will then need 3rd party software to be able to rether.

If you have a European Hero then you first need to install HTCSync on your computer. Then do the following

1.
Make sure your phone

yes, I'm trying to use the phone as a modem. the last HTC phone I had worked great for doing this, but not working with my Hero, which is through ACS in Alaska.
In that case check whether tethering is allowed with your supplier. If it isn't allowed then the Techy was right for the wrong reason - it is nothing to do with XP but because the feature has been blocked in the Hero by your supplier.
