SD Card Naming
In this forum the term SD card refers to the non-removable SD card in the Bionic and SD-Ext card refers to the removable SD card.
Previous Android devices had internal storage and a removable SD card. The Bionic has internal storage on an internal SD card (SD) (some of which is visible) and a removable SD card (SD-Ext).
The Files app that came on all Bionics refers to them one way, the ASTRO app (from Android Market) refers to them by their folder name, and the Titanium Backup Pro app (from Android Market) refers to them a third way.

Bionic System Update Considerations
Factory Data Reset
It is strongly recommended that you do a FDR (Factory Data Reset) immediately after installing the ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) update. There have been very few problems reported with the FDR and the typical problem-after-problem with app-after-app reports never happened after ICS when an FDR was done. Freeze Instead of Delete
If you have decided to root your Bionic you have assumed the responsibility for what happens after that point. A popular activity is to remove apps that you think are Bloatware. If you delete the these pre-installed apps on your root-ed Bionic your attempt to install a system update will probably fail. You need to freeze the pre-installed apps and then thaw them before attempting the update. After the update you can freeze them again.
Android Information and Terms
Bloatware
Verizon pre-installs a lot of apps on the Bionic before it is delivered to you. 99% of these apps can not be disabled unless you are root-ed. The common euphemism for this pre-installed software is "bloatware". There is a big debate as to disabling them or not ... some people say the difference is irrelevant ... they tend to call it pre-installed software. Other people have a near religious commitment to deleting it ... they tend to call it bloatware. If you choose to disable it you should "freeze" it and not "delete" it. (See Freeze later.)
Brick
If you have a root-ed Bionic it is possible to put it in a state from which it will not operate and the only solution is to buy a new Bionic. You have turned your Bionic into a BRICK. (It is strongly recommended that you do some research before root-ing your Bionic.)
CPU
Central Processing Unit (abbreviation and not an acronym) is the element on the Bionic motherboard that methodically interprets software instructions and performs them one after the other. The maximum published speed of the Bionic CPU is 1.0GHz.
Freeze
When going from one sanctioned release of the system to the next sanctioned release of the system (supplied directly from Motorola/Verizon) the process checks for the existence of a lot of software on the current (old) system and will fail if it doesn't find it.
As a result it is a bad idea to ever delete any apps (bloatware). Instead you use a third-party app (like Titanium Backup Pro) and "freeze" it preventing it from ever running but still leaving it installed. (It is strongly recommended that you do some research before root-ing your Bionic.)
Overclock
Every Bionic contains a CPU that methodically interprets software instructions and performs them one after the other. Every CPU is rated to operate correctly at a specific speed (frequency) or less. There is always some margin above this upper limit that can be used and it varies from CPU to CPU. A CPU with a maximum published speed of 1.0GHz may actually be capable of running at 1.4GHz. Another identical CPU might only be able to achieve 1.2GHz.
The faster the CPU runs the more work that can be accomplished in the same amount of time. Unfortunately the faster the CPU runs the more heat will be generated that must be removed.
If you are root-ed you can install an application that will allow you to increase the speed at which your CPU is clocked. If you exceed 1.0GHz on the Bionic that is know as Overclocking. Be warned that if you do this you may seriously damage your Bionic and worst case be require to replace it. (It is strongly recommended that you do some research before root-ing and overclocking your Bionic.)
OTA (over the air)
Any system production or leaked update that comes directly from Verizon/Motorola. Be aware that system upgrades are large patch processes that check for the existence of pre-installed software so they can patch it. If you are root-ed and delete these apps (bloatware) the update will probably fail. If you are root-ed and want to remove the apps (bloatware) you should "freeze" it and then "thaw" it before applying the update.
Root
A phone out of the box is un-rooted and as such is restricted in how an App running on it can access the device and/or other apps running on the device.
Root-ing is running an un-supported modification (A.K.A. hack) on your phone Once and obtaining a circumvention to the restrictions.
An application called SuperUser (or SuperUser Elite) can be installed and then authorize privilege to apps so they can perform functions that an un-authorized app cannot.
In Play Store you will find some apps with a description that they require Root.
The big difference between the un-root-ed world and the root-ed world is that in the root-ed world you assume the responsibility for whatever happens. Don't expect Motorola/Verizon to come to your rescue. You will spend a lot of time searching in forums like ... Bionic - All Things Root - Android Forums ... for more information. (It is strongly recommended that you do some research before root-ing your Bionic.)
USB Connection
Jelly Bean or Ice Cream Sandwich
When you connect your Bionic to a PC using the USB cable that came with your Bionic a USB Connection menu will be available in the Notification Area of your Bionic where you can select Mass Storage, Media device (MTP), or Camera (PTP).
If you select Mass Storage ... the PC will have exclusive access to the SD and SD-Ext cards. Two drives will appear in the Computer display on the PC (SD and SD-Ext card). If you attempt to access the SD or SD-Ext cards from the Bionic display you will simply get an error message. (You can label these drives on the PC display.)
If you select Media device (MTP) ... the Bionic and PC will have shared access to the SD and SD-Ext cards. If you select the Portable Devices icon two drives will appear in the Computer display on the PC (Internal storage and SD card). You can access the files from the Bionic and PC.
If you select Camera (PTP) ... the Bionic and PC will have shared access to the SD and SD-Ext cards.
If you select the Portable Devices icon two drives will appear in the Computer display on the PC (Internal storage and SD card). You can access all the files from the Bionic and some of the files form the PC.
Gingerbread
When you connect your Bionic running Gingerbread to a PC using the USB cable that came with your Bionic a USB Connection menu will be available in the Notification Area of your Bionic where you can select PC Mode, Windows Media Sync, USB Mass Storage, or Charge Only.
If you select PC Mode, Windows Media Sync, or USB Mass Storage ... the PC will have exclusive access to the SD and SD-Ext cards. Two drives will appear in the Computer display on the PC (SD and SD-Ext card). If you attempt to access the SD or SD-Ext cards from the Bionic display you will simply get an error message. Switch to Charge Only to allow Bionic access.
If you select Charge Only ... the Bionic will have exclusive access to the SD and SD-Ext cards. The two drives will not appear in the Computer display on the PC. (If they were displayed prior to switching to Charge Only they will disappear and there is no way to access the SD or SD-Ext cards from the PC. Switch to one of the other modes to allow PC access.

There is a big debate as to disabling them or not ... some people say the difference is irrelevant ... they tend to call it pre-installed software. Other people have a near religious commitment to deleting it ... they tend to call it bloatware. If you choose to disable it you should "freeze" it and not "delete" it. (See Freeze later.)
Brick
If you have a root-ed Bionic it is possible to put it in a state from which it will not operate and the only solution is to buy a new Bionic. You have turned your Bionic into a BRICK. (It is strongly recommended that you do some research before root-ing your Bionic.)
CPU
Central Processing Unit (abbreviation and not an acronym) is the element on the Bionic motherboard that methodically interprets software instructions and performs them one after the other. The maximum published speed of the Bionic CPU is 1.0GHz.
Freeze
When going from one sanctioned release of the system to the next sanctioned release of the system (supplied directly from Motorola/Verizon) the process checks for the existence of a lot of software on the current (old) system and will fail if it doesn't find it.
As a result it is a bad idea to ever delete any apps (bloatware). Instead you use a third-party app (like Titanium Backup Pro) and "freeze" it preventing it from ever running but still leaving it installed. (It is strongly recommended that you do some research before root-ing your Bionic.)
Overclock
Every Bionic contains a CPU that methodically interprets software instructions and performs them one after the other. Every CPU is rated to operate correctly at a specific speed (frequency) or less. There is always some margin above this upper limit that can be used and it varies from CPU to CPU. A CPU with a maximum published speed of 1.0GHz may actually be capable of running at 1.4GHz. Another identical CPU might only be able to achieve 1.2GHz.
The faster the CPU runs the more work that can be accomplished in the same amount of time. Unfortunately the faster the CPU runs the more heat will be generated that must be removed.
If you are root-ed you can install an application that will allow you to increase the speed at which your CPU is clocked. If you exceed 1.0GHz on the Bionic that is know as Overclocking. Be warned that if you do this you may seriously damage your Bionic and worst case be require to replace it. (It is strongly recommended that you do some research before root-ing and overclocking your Bionic.)
OTA (over the air)
Any system production or leaked update that comes directly from Verizon/Motorola. Be aware that system upgrades are large patch processes that check for the existence of pre-installed software so they can patch it. If you are root-ed and delete these apps (bloatware) the update will probably fail. If you are root-ed and want to remove the apps (bloatware) you should "freeze" it and then "thaw" it before applying the update.
Root
A phone out of the box is un-rooted and as such is restricted in how an App running on it can access the device and/or other apps running on the device.
Root-ing is running an un-supported modification (A.K.A. hack) on your phone Once and obtaining a circumvention to the restrictions.
An application called SuperUser (or SuperUser Elite) can be installed and then authorize privilege to apps so they can perform functions that an un-authorized app cannot.
In Play Store you will find some apps with a description that they require Root.
The big difference between the un-root-ed world and the root-ed world is that in the root-ed world you assume the responsibility for whatever happens. Don't expect Motorola/Verizon to come to your rescue. You will spend a lot of time searching in forums like ... Bionic - All Things Root - Android Forums ... for more information. (It is strongly recommended that you do some research before root-ing your Bionic.)
Jelly Bean or Ice Cream Sandwich
When you connect your Bionic to a PC using the USB cable that came with your Bionic a USB Connection menu will be available in the Notification Area of your Bionic where you can select Mass Storage, Media device (MTP), or Camera (PTP).
If you select Mass Storage ... the PC will have exclusive access to the SD and SD-Ext cards. Two drives will appear in the Computer display on the PC (SD and SD-Ext card). If you attempt to access the SD or SD-Ext cards from the Bionic display you will simply get an error message. (You can label these drives on the PC display.)
If you select Media device (MTP) ... the Bionic and PC will have shared access to the SD and SD-Ext cards. If you select the Portable Devices icon two drives will appear in the Computer display on the PC (Internal storage and SD card). You can access the files from the Bionic and PC.
If you select Camera (PTP) ... the Bionic and PC will have shared access to the SD and SD-Ext cards.
If you select the Portable Devices icon two drives will appear in the Computer display on the PC (Internal storage and SD card). You can access all the files from the Bionic and some of the files form the PC.
Gingerbread
When you connect your Bionic running Gingerbread to a PC using the USB cable that came with your Bionic a USB Connection menu will be available in the Notification Area of your Bionic where you can select PC Mode, Windows Media Sync, USB Mass Storage, or Charge Only.
If you select PC Mode, Windows Media Sync, or USB Mass Storage ... the PC will have exclusive access to the SD and SD-Ext cards. Two drives will appear in the Computer display on the PC (SD and SD-Ext card). If you attempt to access the SD or SD-Ext cards from the Bionic display you will simply get an error message. Switch to Charge Only to allow Bionic access.
If you select Charge Only ... the Bionic will have exclusive access to the SD and SD-Ext cards. The two drives will not appear in the Computer display on the PC. (If they were displayed prior to switching to Charge Only they will disappear and there is no way to access the SD or SD-Ext cards from the PC. Switch to one of the other modes to allow PC access.
