I struggle sometimes reading through 40, 50 and even 60 posts through multiple websites to build my understanding of Android. I really appreciate the friendly atmosphere of the Androiders. In order to help cut down on questions and speed up the learning curve of those like me who need a visual aid, here is a video for you.

This video shows how to install the new GummyCharged Gingerbread 2.1 ROM. It is a super fast ROM for root users. Read all the show notes, watch the video, go to Rootzwiki and read the forums. Then after that try this out once you are confident. Do not miss any steps as a little one may cause your phone to get stuck. This video is for users who are already on GummyCharge Froyo 2.0.

While it is not needed, it is recommended that you install EP1W radios

Settings - About phone - Baseband version - look at the last three characters. There are 2 sets - as there are 2 modem/radios (CDMA, LTE).

Please Wipe Data regardless of what ROM you come from

Do not use themes from previous GBE releases you will get a bootloop

Install - CWM only:
Make sure you have root and Clockwork recovery installed
-boot into recovery via Recovery
-select "wipe data/factory reset"
-select advanced and "wipe Dalvik Cache"
-select "Yes - delete all data" for each one
-go back
-select "install zip from sdcard"
-select "choose zip from sdcard"
-find and select GummyCharged GBE 2.0
-let phone do its thing and then reboot
-if like me - pull battery once screen is dead
-put battery back and go into recovery
-find and select GummyCharge GBE 2.1
-let phone do its thing and then reboot
-if like me - pull battery once screen is dead
-put battery back and go into recovery
-select advanced and "wipe Dalvik Cache" (must do!)
-select "wipe data/factory reset" (skip this step unless the Dalvik wipe alone didn't fix the black screen issue)
-select "Yes - delete all data" for each one
-reboot and give the phone time as it will need to setup without interruption
-sign into google and begin to restore apps
-go into setting and tools to turn on preferred items like the battery %

Isn't 2.1 just a patch if one deletes 2.0 and wipe it from data/factory and so on and then installing 2.1 this will not work update 2.1 is for 2.0 if they delete 2.0 how is 2.1 going to work

After you have 2.0 installed you are to do this

go into recovery
-select "wipe cache partition"
-select advanced and "wipe Dalvik Cache"

Then install 2.1 from SD card.

I had this problem not saying you will have to do this but i did i could not get 2.1 to install until i mounted system so might have to go into

-mounts and storage and "mount system"

Anyways

you have it written like this.

-find and select GummyCharge GBE 2.1
-let phone do its thing and then reboot
-if like me - pull battery once screen is dead
-put battery back and go into recovery

Isn't doing this is just going to wipe system again.... and one has to start over.

Gummy has it this way if you are on 2.0

Hot boot fix GBE 2.1 (UPDATE FROM 2.0 zip)
GummyCharged GBE 2.1

Please wipe dalvik and cache with this update.

Not wipe data/factory reset.

Just making sure......

Yeah I was wondering that as well, you cant delete 2.0 and expect 2.1 to mount 2.1 is an update. not a full Rom.

He needs to re write that or people are going to get confused.

I was stuck on the black screen of death. If your way works you let me know and I can adjust the show notes. I was not able to get out of the black screen of death without doing that.

So far doing as I stated gets people out the black screen of death and has got people up and running on 2.1. I have no problem adjusting things so long as it works. And right now all I know is the way I used. When I get time I can give it a try again.

So far doing as I stated gets people out the black screen of death and has got people up and running on 2.1. I have no problem adjusting things so long as it works. And right now all I know is the way I used. When I get time I can give it a try again.

Nono,, please help! This is for everyone and I really do not want to give someone bad directions. The help is really appreciated.

Honestly you made me questions myself wish means I need to find the answer and I do not have it yet. I just do not have a moment right now to erase my phone again and start over.

The partition/factory reset does normally bring a person back to stock just as you stated. I just got stuck and could not make it work. I did that and everything loaded right up on 2.1 which means the load process was stuck and broke. And that factory reset was broke.

A few people completed the process per my directions with success. I just asked them if they had to wipe factory reset also or not. I have not heard back, but as you stated this is a very important step and needs to be right.

Thanks again for your help and if you find the answer before me let me know please. I will then edit all my notes and edit up the video. Thanks!!!

I went from Gummy Froyo 2.0 to Gummy Gingerbread 2.0 and then added the hotfix 2.1. I followed your video and I never once hit a black screen. Everything installed smoothly without a hitch. I wonder what was causing you to get the black screen?

I did a factory reset before going to the Gingerbread version FYI.

Also, thanks for your videos! They are really helpful, especially for a visual guy like myself.

Glad to hear it... I have been working with two others also having different issues under the same process. One is stuck right now on a black screen after everything. The other only got stuck after 2.0 and then 2.1 one loaded just fine. Strange little glitches...

I have loved it so far. One issue with Google Talk not showing people on. And I had one time which required a battery pull. But other than that it has been super fast and great in general. How about you?

It has been 15 days since I started running GummyCharge 2.1 on the Droid Charge. Feel free to follow my link to my full review. But in a nutshell here it is...

Positive:
Snappiness is excellent and the best I have seen yet.
Battery life is 3/4 better than stock.
General appearance and features are very customizable

Negative:
2 battery pulls needed in 15 days (no big deal as I am a very demanding user)
Requires a fair amount of setup upon first start to include clock, bat percent, etc...

These videos are truly great, but there's too much here (especially after what I've been through) to have me feeling comfortable about what to download, from where to download it, and in what order to apply it.

I am currently on my 4th Android phone (I was one of the original G1 users), and I have always rocked root and custom ROMs without issue. I heard that the Droid Charge was one of the easiest Android phones of all time to root and customize, but that has not been my experience.

The thing came in the box today, and I unwrapped it and set out to root it. I found your little videos, and I also found this guide, which is supposed to be one of the best.

I figured with my experience, Tom's guide, and your videos this would be unquestionably my easiest Android hacking experience yet... WRONG!

After I watched your rooting video and reading through tom's "how to root instructions" set, I decided I would begin.

10 minutes later I was happy. (at least i think I was, truth be told I never bothered to test if I actually had root or not)

Then I decided it was custom rom time. Having already watched your video for rooting I decided Gummy was the way to go. 15 minutes later I was stuck in a boot loop. 30 minutes after that I was finally able to get back into recovery where I couldn't mount my SD card. I applied the SD fix beforehand, but recovery didn't think so I guess. I dunno.

Anyway, I updated the ClockworkRecovery to the Voodoo Lagfix recovery and again was stuck in a boot loop. Got through that and still couldn't mount SD. Decided I would just ODIN back to stock and start over. 10 minutes later I was facing another boot loop. So, I flashed back to stock with Odin 1 last time restoring the Charge.pit.

This time, the phone wouldn't even power on and I couldn't even get back into Download Mode. My heart was racing. The next hour plus was spent going crazy and worrying. Finally I read a suggestion to try booting into Download Mode using AC power rather than usb DC, and gave it a shot. The phone actually powered on and went into download mode... yay!

Finally the stock flash and charge.pit took too. So, I am unbricked and back to stock. But now I'm a little gun shy.

If you can't make a video from Stock to Gummy 2.1 with a list of files to download and locations, could you at least point me to a guide that goes stock, root, gummy (all in one) rather than me trying to piece it together?

I would really appreciate it. I've never owned a non-rooted device before, and I don't want to start with the first phone I've had that is actually supposed to be awesome.

Okay, I will try to break this down..I changed the color just to make it easier to see.

Per each vid there is a tutorial below it on the youtube website. Hundreds have been successful before you with this and I know you will be.

I am also a user of my Android and other smart phones who roots basically everything. There is one major difference with the Charge- ROM Manager and other similar pieces that work on other phones do not on the Charge even though they install. Do not use ROM manager. Use clockwork only by going into the recovery mode via holding the home button and the up volume button and then power. Never through ROM manager/recovery.

As far as being easy... it is if your run the ROMs with everything needed in it from one flash. Most Rooting, ROMs, and Themes require different pieces to be collected up and changed including apps like voodoo, clockwork, busybox, superuser, the antenna software, kernels, etc... The good news is there are many options depending on your preference which gives many people.

That guide looks nice. I did not read easy page, but it looks like some work was put into it.

I am guessing this is only due to missing the fine details. Maybe you just need a ROM with everything built it. I would suggest a version of Humble or GummyCharge you can just flash with Odin on your computer and be done with it.

There is no other option, but to be rooted. If you flashed the file from my vid, your phone was completely erased and then new file was put on it. That file is only rooted and nothing else. You may have need to download superuser, update it from within the app and then you would be good to go.

Did you go to my youtube channel and read the tutorials below and follow the links to the each forum with all the common questions? This would fix a lot of your issues I bet.

I guess you missed several pieces. What version of Gummy did you flash? If you followed my instructions you would root, flash Gummy 1.9 via odin, flash 2.0 via clockwork and then 2.1. Doing this gives you all the pieces you need.

If you did not then you would need root, flash the correct antennas, kernel, busybox, clockwork, voodoo, lag fix, superuser off the top of my head. And these MUST be the version which work with the charge and NOT generally the ones from the market.


Anyway, I updated the ClockworkRecovery to the Voodoo Lagfix recovery and again was stuck in a boot loop. Got through that and still couldn't mount SD. Be careful, if you flash clockwork and voodoo but are running other none matching items you can be forced back to the stock recovery without knowing it till you try to get into recovery again.

That is not something I can do exactly. The Gummy Team as of last check did not make a GummyCharge 2.1 over Gingerbread that you can just flash to. It is a little challenging which is why I made the vids.

If you use the links under my vids to the GummyCharge downloads, the dev explains exactly what state your phone must be in to use the ROM. Or you can follow each of my vids to get you there. I will help along the way as I have for many before you. I really am in the hundreds to thousands. You can see with over 28,000 views on the rooting vid alone. I get endless private messages, post from many forums, and tons of questions posted below the vids... not one permanent brick yet!!! Possibly one fried SD card tho...still working on that right now. Not fully confirmed yet.

Take a deep breath.... you WILL get there. These ROMs are really great and will change your phone for the better. Watch each of my vids and do not miss a step. Follow the links to the correct forum and read a little on each one to see how other people handled the charge...it is a little different due to things like ROM Manager issues.

I have to leave in the morning early till Monday. I usually try to help out everyday. But once a month I must leave my cell phone behind for work reasons. I likely will not be able to respond till then. You can wait for me or once you have read enough and watched all the vids go for it! There are many great people on Android Central who would be glad to help.

I gave it another try last night, but I went off on my own because I couldn't find (I didn't exactly go hunting for it either though once the downloads weren't in the initial thread) a download for GummyCharged 1.9 in your video or comments/description.

What I did find was a ROM for "Bloated EG2 + Gingerbread." So I grabbed it instead. Then I downloaded the Gingerbread versions of Gummy 2.0 (GBE2.0) and 2.1 (GBE2.1), I left the Froyo (FE2.0) behind, since I was starting with EG2 Gingerbread. I assumed that I had all possible pieces in my arsenal, so I set out to destroy my phone again.

Here's what I did.

1. Used Odin to ROOT with StockrootedED1
2. Rebooted into Android to test for life
3. Used Odin to flash Bloated EG2 + Gingerbread
4. Rebooted into Android to test for life
5. Used Odin to flash CWM (0817 Charge Recovery) Recovery
6. Used CWM Recovery to wipe all data and caches
7. Used CWM Recovery to flash Gingerbread Gummy Charged 2.0
8. Rebooted into Android to test for life
9. Used CWM Recovery to wipe all data and caches
10. Used CWM Recovery to flash Gingerbread Gummy Charged 2.1 update
11. Rebooted into GBE2.1 with a smile on my face

That is essentially what went down. What I left out was the first two times I flashed StockrootedED1 in Odin last night the download failed. Needless to say that didn't help my paranoia, but since I hadn't fried the little phone yet, I pressed forward. I also didn't mention how scared I was when the phone started talking to me in the boot up stage after flashing one (I think it was Gummy 2.0) of the roms... not entirely sure what it said (I think it had to do with repartitioning the cache partition, though I'm not sure) because I was too busy freaking out wondering if I had just created a new cyber bride (How was I going to feed her? How would my non-cyber wife feel about her?), if Samsung or the FBI were being dispatched to my house (hey it could happen, these things are GPS equipped!), if I had just launched a nuclear missile (her digitized voice was rather 80s sci-fi creepy) without selecting a proper target, or managed to ruin my phone for good. Since I was already crapping myself and couldn't turn it off, I decided to finish the rest of the hacking process from the bathroom. At least there I had toilet paper (needed now) and food (what? you don't keep food in your bathroom?).

Much to my surprise after a couple minutes of delayed speech I saw the Gummy boot screen smile at me, so I stopped panicking. Note: I did not, however, leave the bathroom. So anyway, while I did not include those exact steps in my walkthrough listed above, I figured I included enough of the process to keep from losing most folks.

Also -- WARNING do not accept the OTA update from Verizon. You should not get it on this ROM. But if it shows up DO NOT take it as it will mess you all up. Some people have been reporting seeing this on GummyCharge. I have not.

After using GummyCharged for 5 days here are my thoughts...

first... it's quick and minimalistic. I like both.
second... i still cannot send or receive picture/video messages. Texts (SMS) come through and send just find, but Picture/Video (MMS) messages maintain a status of "sending" forever.

I thought that mind have to do with the radio, so I used Odin to flash the latest radio, but that didn't help. I had similar problems with previous custom ROMs on other phones too. I think clearing dalvik cache usually helped with that. Maybe I should give that a try.

Anyway outside of the MMS issue (which I'm sure I will rectify soon), I'm enjoying Gummy.

Addendum: That did it. Re-wiping Dalvik Cache seems to have fixed the MMS issue.
