If the stats posted above are correct, then as of now and for the next few days only one out of every 1000 G1 users on TMO in the US will have received the OTA update. According to the AF homepage there are ~1200 active users on this board. Of those 1200 people it is safe to say that a good chunk, we'll say 400, are outside of the US. The we can throw in that a ~100 more are outside of TMO, and even a few who don't own a G1 to begin with. So rough math says that between 600-700 people are going to be eligible to have received the update as of this writing. With that said, the chance that no one who visits this board has this update is very good. Very, very good. Come Monday evening we should have our first confirmed SS of a TMO US user having the 1.5 OTA update. Only a few days remaining.

That does make a lot of sense. I don't know why peeps are so impatient, they'll just be impatiently waiting for 2.0.:D

As T-Mobile continues to improve customers' G1 experience, Android 1.5 will begin rolling out to T-Mobile G1 customers at the end of May. The over-the-air (OTA) update will include many new feature enhancements and updates. The OTA will be sent out in phases with all customers receiving the update by the first week in June.

  • On screen full QWERTY keyboard with dictionary
  • Video record and playback capabilities
  • Easy uploading of photos to Picasa and videos to YouTube
  • Faster camera start-up and image capture
  • Faster acquisition of GPS location
  • Smoother page scrolling in Browser
  • Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP and AVCRP profiles) and auto pairing
  • In-call keypad timeout - keypad locks instead of displaying a dark screen
  • Alternate e-mail required on device when creating a new Gmail account
  • User interface updates and modifications making the G1 easier to use and navigate
Customers will receive a pop-up message on their device informing them their device has received an OTA update. Once G1 customers receive the OTA pop-up message, they will have the option to Update Now or Update Later. Customers will need to accept the download and install the new software. This is similar to the way they download an application from the Market. After customers complete the OTA, their device will reboot and no further action is required. Representatives will be unable to manually send the OTA update to customers. OTAs are scheduled and the system will send them out automatically.

Note: Customers without the required G1 data SOC will not receive the OTA and must add the SOC in order to receive the update.

Action Steps

  • Be aware of the OTA being sent to G1 customers.
  • Advise customers that OTAs are periodically delivered to their handsets to enhance performance or add functionality.
  • This OTA will be seamless to customers and they will not lose any of their personal information or downloads.
  • The Android 1.5 update OTA incorporates all updates from previous software releases.
  • Inform customers who call in requesting the OTA that we are unable to send it to them but assure them they will receive the update by the first week in June.
  • Be aware the OTA provides a new build number for the software. When troubleshooting, make sure to check the build number to insure an upcoming OTA will not fix the issue.
