 How in the world do I check my incoming text messages while using the browser? I hear the notification sound but have no notification bar or any menu options to swith apps like my Blackberry had. On a few random occassions I have gotten a menu just like the one my blackberry would give me when I wanted to switch apps, unfortunately I have no idea where it came from or how it got there. I have tried what seems to be everything and can't find any evidence of this menu even existing, anywhere! Please help!

Seems to me you press the HOME button, then press the icon for what ever app you are using for messages (Messages or Handcent, etc), or then pull down the notification from the notification bar.

You can then HOME again, and then browser, it will still be where you left it

Pressing and holding menu while in the browser gives me the normal options of forward, back, bookmarks, windows etc.... I want to find which button and how to get the menu (while on a web page) that gives me options of messages, emails etc without leaving the browser. Thanks for both of the answers!

I've had my Hero for 3 weeks now and this always bugged me too. Today I finally broke down and got Handcent, it is so much better than the stock SMS. Now when I'm browsing the web and I get a text it pops up in front of my web page. I can read it and answer, then close it and still be where I was. Sorry I can't help with the stock texting app, all I can say is go Handcent.

Try the pressing and holding the HOME button, not the menu button

It sounds like you're using the stock browser. If you download dolphin browser from the android market, you'll be able to use your notification drop down bar.
