Root Bugless vs. Sholes

Okay, I have been running sholes for a few days now and I am really digging it. I have also just OCd to 800 mhz (which I am currently happy with). I keep hearing about Pete's Bugless Beast. My question is, which of the two is better? I am not looking for opinions but more or less facts as to why someone would flash BB over Sholes or vise versa. Is there performance differnces, visual differences, etc.?

Well, I don't know about "facts" but I have ran both roms off and on the past week or so trying them out. I'm running Bugless Beauty (not beast) but it is the same rom minus the wifi fix and overclocking. I do have Beauty OC'd to 1GHz using the new kernels that Taz put out on AllDroid.

Sholes: Biggest pro over BB in my opinion is that it has the 2.1 launcher. Aside from that the only other pro for me is that Sholes now has an updater that you can use to download and install updates without having to go through any commands or pushing files to your SD Card and then going into recovery...etc.

Bugless: While both use a variation of the "Smoked Glass" ROM, Bugless looks better as the pull down notification panel looks cleaner. Performance is better with BB as it is exceptionally smooth transitioning between screens. Bugless uses the app drawer and not the 2.1 launcher but it looks good and is very fast.

Speed: Using SetCPU, the benchmarks were close but the same 1GHz OC on both roms favors Bugless by just a little bit (10 ms maybe on average). This didn't make sense but I ran the benchmarks enough to say that Bugless was faster. In actual operation, it seems like a bigger difference in speed.

My testing has left me with Bugless on my phone. I see it as a more refined ROM.

I use Bugless Beast and it has been a very stable experience for me - I have had one PITA app, which just happens to be one that I don't give a rat's derriere for - Corporate email - so, overall, it is great.

Using profiles in SetCPU after updating to the Evil 1100 MHz boot img, My battery lasts the exact same amount (if not more) of time, even though I am now actually running Twitter constantly and I now have 3 GMail accounts and FB synchronizing as opposed to the one that I had originally set up - so, with intelligent profile selection, battery performance should be at least as good as before, if not better.

I find all the options very nice (choosing stock or smoked theme, FLAC support, etc). Also, Sholes has birdman optimizing their ROMs, so the stock apps take less memory.

It's running very well for me at 1GHz. No FCs and no random reboots. CPU temp hardly reaches 40C.

Okay, so I'm really not up on FLAC other than it appears to be a new type of audio file. Is this the new mp3? I have never seen a FLAC file extension. Have I been in a cave or something?

Google Maps are messed up though in 2.0.3 right?

2.0.3 no longer contains/modifies Google Maps. If you install without wiping, Maps stays the same. If you wipe, simply reinstall Maps off the market.

I have read people saying that they have had problems with the maps. I guess I do not use the maps enough because I opened and used it with no problem. Not sure what's "supposed" to be wrong.

I will post more on this later, but I had been running Sholes 2.0.3 for the past few days and it just didn't feel quite right. Nothing major, but it was a bit sluggish, I had a couple of reboots as well as hangs and glitches during phone calls. I was really close to just going back to stock.

So, I decided to try Bugless Beast today. I will post back in a few days, but so far, the difference is considerable. The phone is very responsive and so far everything is working properly, no reboots etc.

I am/was running both at 1000, actually identical settings in setCPU. YMMV, but so far, at least on my phone, Bugless Beast runs better and faster.

You have the choice of installing stock or smoked glass. I'm assuming you know what the stock theme looks like. The smoked glass looks like this:

No, this is the 2.0.1 launcher, with a theme on it. I thought that was your question? The 2.1 launcher is quite different, but at this point, not practical on the Droid, though it is an option in the Sholes ROM.

Unfortunately, since they're not on Alldroid anymore, this is Sholes' method of releasing their ROMs. You can, however, make it faster if you download over WiFi. Over 3G, it could take a while.

That's not my Droid, heh. But if you want to take a screenshot, download drocap2 from the market (root access required)

If you already have a BB nandroid, I assume you're running SPRecovery 0.99.2b?

All SMUpdater does is install the latest SPRecovery and download their ROM, then run a script to autoinstall it when it reboots.

You'll still be able to get into recovery like before and backup/restore with nandroid.

Okay - so far my experience with Bugless Beast has been outstanding. Very stable, very friendly to overclocking, no reboots or glitches.

I do want to mention that my test with Shules was probably hindered by my use of the 2.1 app drawer. This thing looks pretty cool, but it is very glitchy and temperamental. In hind sight I wish I would have tried Shules with the 2.0.1 app drawer.

If anyone is considering running Shules, do yourself a favor and don't run with the 2.1 app drawer.

Yea, when I first flashed to sholes, I wanted to have it all. I wanted the 2.1 milestone look and everything. It took me a matter of 5 mins to decide to reflash and drop the 2.1 Launcher. Even being overclocked it was glitchy and laggy as crap. Wish they could get that figured out. From what I have read though, it is that way on the stock milestone (laggy). Sucks for them.

I prefer the Beast/Beauty ROM's over Sholes, but I am biased as Pete is a friend of mine and I host his files. I tried Sholes in the beginning and it was way buggy, then I tried it again when Bitchin' Bagel came out and while it was a huge improvement over the first few ROM's it just didn't seem as smooth as Pete's stuff.

The other thing, and this is just a personal, the Sholes team talks wayyy to much shit about Pete. They call him a thief, claim he isn't a "real" dev, and that he is just taking their work and re-naming it. All of that is totally uncalled for and not true, it all started when Pete came out with the Bugless Beauty and like EVERYONE downloaded it and he got a ton of 'fame' from it. Obviously Sholes was the only big ROM out until that so when he started getting more downloads then them they got jealous.

Really stupid stuff because imagine if they could have just teamed up or at least shared tips with each other? We would have some crazy ROM's.

Good Point, CRP - instead of having jealousy between the devs, there should be an openness - after all, isn't that a part of the nature of Android in the first place, the openness to freely develop for the platform without any sort of restrictions? Isn't that one of the reasons we who have opted or Android-based phones actually picked them over other platforms?

Sad that there is so much hatred on the Sholes team side. Nevertheless, I have to also agree with the idea that Pete's builds are pretty damn stable. 160+ apps installed on my Bugless 0.7.5 and it doesn't blink at me when I try to do something new - it just loads right up and away I go.
