2.1 Media Gallery and App Launcher (.apk files for 2.0.1 - no rooting needed)

Linked are two .apk files I found on these forums somewhere (I'm sorry but I don't remember where exactly).

I did not source either of these, they were both on external sites linked by other people on these forums and I would give credit if I remember where I found them. I don't take any responsibility for these files.

Obviously they have been posted before but with all the arguing going on in the 2.1 OTA update threads it seems a lot of people must not be aware that you can get some of the 2.1 functionality right now without rooting and I figured I'd put them in an easily searchable thread.

The launcher looks just like the Nexus One with the 3D scroll effect, 5 home screens and the little dots at the bottom. It also appears to include some cool wallpapers (NOT ANIMATED) which probably also come from the Nexus One. It runs very smoothly and I don't think I've had it force close once in the few days I've used it. This will replace whatever Home app you happen to be using.

The media browser also looks like the one from the Nexus One. The icon and application name are identical to the 2.0.1 gallery so once installed you'll have to use trial and error to figure out which one it is. It launches just fine from a shortcut on a home screen, but does not like me launching it directly from Camera Zoom FX (a camera replacement app) and force closes. If you have Camera Zoom FX, do not push the gallery button or you will get stuck in a force close loop and be forced to either reset the phone or frantically hit the "Force Close" on screen button and the Home softkey until it goes away. It seems to work fine launching from the built in camera app.

These can both be installed by moving the .apk files to your SD Card. Then run App Installer (found on marketplace) and make sure in your application settings you have "Unknown sources" checked.

I wish I could post screenshots but my phone isn't rooted.

I do not know of a good place to host these files and they are too big to attach to the thread. Rapidshare free uploads can only be downloaded 10 times. I will ask my brother if I can use his premium account to upload them to but if someone else has somewhere they could host the files that would be very helpful.

** MOD EDIT** Please don't post links to illegal software

The "other" forums posted this like 6 weeks ago. I think this "news" has already been through here ... but I guess I could be wrong.

What you might want to know is that the Launcher for 2.1 is a real dog on a 2.0.1 DROID. You'll like it for about a day or two, then delete it like all of us did.

The Media Gallery is cooler, more functional, and doesn't seem to lag like the 2.1 Launcher does.

Well I never claimed it was new. Just thought it might be good to consolidate the files and make them easier to find.

I'm not sure what you mean about the app launcher being slow. For me I'd say it works at least as fast as the stock one.

2.1 Launcher is far superior to the 2.0.1 setup. Originally, with 3 screens and the app drawer, my first swipe would ALWAYS lag. After I had moved between screens once, it would go smooth. But as soon as I left and then came back to home, sure enough, my first move left or right would lag really bad.

I installed 2.1 and have experienced ZERO lag in screen transitions. It's extremely pleasing, and in addition, the dot navigation works just as seamlessly as well. The ONLY downside to the 2.1 launcher, IMO, is that it takes slightly longer to load your app drawer. And then once it's loaded, it has that goofy slide back motion.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the 2.1 launcher, or listen to those on here that do. I freakin' love it and it won't hurt for people to try it. It was a great alternative to rooting for me as well. I wanted to root simply to overclock to remove the lag on the home screen. Installing the launcher solved that problem. :) Whether you like it or not, it's nice to have options.

edited : thank you very much for the files ... by the way. if you know of an app for live wallpapers or any other goodies, please feel free to pm me. i do not plan on rooting. : end edit

well, good thing i found this minutes after it was posted. i'm glad i was able to download these 2 files. i haven't fooled with the launcher much, but the gallery brings tears to my eyes. i just wish i could select which folders were viewable. i don't care to have my album artwork in the gallery. does anyone know of any options menu? i can't seem to find one for the slide show. it's fine the way it is, i would like to have a bit more control.

What a fail thread this is turning out to be. If I find the original threads can I link to those?

There are hacker forums and legit forums. Learning the difference will serve you well in the future Grasshopper.

And no, you cannot link to threads that contain illegal files. Well, you can. I just think those links will get deleted by the powers that be.

Maybe on your Droid, but it works just fine on mine.
