guess that quote ....

anyway, i've been viewing this forum since about a week before droid's release. i've never felt the need to create an account because i can usually find the answers i need with about 5 minutes of searching. lately i've noticed things are exponentially more difficult. i have just a few suggestions that might make it easier on newbies like me.

if someone asks a question and you know the answer, please answer it instead of posting a link ... to a link ... to a link. it's very difficult to find anything on another thread, and here's why: threads get off topic so easily since we've achieved the holy grail ...root. rooting takes up so much space on threads that do not condone rooting. if i want to know which gallery app performs the best, i don't need 12 of you telling me that you rooted your droid and it's clocking 1.1ghz and posting a link to thread that has 7 pages of replies that tell me that they rooted their phones with beast then beauty and back to beast now.

please just help us out. i've noticed a few guys that are very helpful and humble, but also seem to be the go-to guys when it comes to the serious technical questions. why can't the rest of us be more like that? i can tell you that there are not a lot of people that are impressed by the "root" answer. not the people asking the question, and probably not the big guys that taught YOU how to do it. i think a lot of clutter would be resolved if we would stop shoving root down people's throat. no one likes it when christians do it (i'm a christian so don't burn a cross in my yard) and no one likes it when root fanatics do it either. i promise you it doesn't make you seem any better than the rest of us. i thought i would escape this problem after leaving winmo, but it followed me here. i don't remember the elitism being such a huge deal until the droid was rooted.

i guess you can say that rooting is the root of the problem.

before that, everyone was a "n00b" . we were the first with android 2.0 and everyone was on the same plane for a lil while.

i suffered through nearly a year of samsung omnia i910 and i've lived for 30 years without live wallpapers. i think we'll be ok with the bread and water of 2.0.1 until 2.1 finally comes out. ....i do realize that live wallpapers are not supposed to be included. let's make the world a better place and help out our fellow droid owners. everyone hold hands and sing.........

thank you very much. i just think it's a shame that such a great platform and great community can be diminished by trying to out-do each other. guys like me that don't really know much can get pretty overwhelmed by the amount of tech talk that clutters threads with very simple questions and answers. i think it's nice when people are willing to help each other.

Umm ... but they just created an "All Things Root" subforum, and this should be a non-issue in the main forum from now on. Seems your post is a little too little too late. Or am I missing something?

yes, you did miss something.

http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/44739-goodbye-sweeter-home-2-we-had-fun-while-lasted.html

that's a link to the very first thread i read after your reply to me. i have absolutely no interest in sweeter home, i just read it to see how long it would take to get hijacked, and guess what. the 2nd reply did it. rooted and back to the beast. i also noticed that you were the first and last reply on that particular thread. so you must have noticed how it had a lil side conversation on the bugless beast.

seems my post was right on time

(the edit) just a side note. 5 out of 13 replies mention roms, root, or overclocking.

But there are dynamics that I must bring up. A lot of forum readers and/or lurkers see the things that us modders, hackers, (whatever you want to call us) are doing and want to emulate those things. But then, when we mention what we've done to get our DROIDs looking, acting, and performing the way we do ... we get the response, "Oh, but I don't want to root." ... or "But I don't want to over-clock.". Like they say, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Most of the threads that get hi-jacked into "root" topics are because that is the best way to go about accomplishing what the OP wants.

I wish I had a dollar for every PM I've received asking me how to root. How to over-clock. What is a ROM? What is ADB? Can you help me with Sweeter Home? The list goes on & on... And I have yet to ignore one single person.

by the way, you are one of the guys that seem to be very helpful, so i just want to put that out there. i have read many of your posts and you definitely know your way around a droid. many of my small questions have been answered by your posts/replies

having said that, i know that rooting has it's place conversations, BUT what does it have to do with sweeter home? actually, i think sweeter home is more intense than rooting, but anyway (lol). that was just the first thing i looked at and it just so happened to prove my point. i really don't want to start big thing here. i know rooting is exciting and something to really be proud of, BUT flashing custom roms ripped from closed source is illegal and there are a select few of us that don't want to do illegal things. i am not saying that i am one of those people. i go over the speed limit ....

i promise i don't think rooting/oc'ing/roms are bad in any way. i flashed my old omnia about 1000 times with custom roms. i even had android 1. whatever on my omnia at one time. there is a guy on this very forum that designed a few roms i used. just now i skimmed through the first 6 threads on the droid forum and 5 either had side conversations of rooting/oc'ing/roms AND/OR used those subjects as answers to problems. a few of these threads are so specific to rooting that i think they should be moved to the sub-forum

i do appreciate your thread on the perfect droid.

here is a quote from you..."There are hacker forums and legit forums. Learning the difference will serve you well in the future Grasshopper"

from this thread
http://androidforums.com/motorola-d...uncher-apk-files-2-0-1-no-rooting-needed.html

i am not wanting to fight. the exact opposite. you're first reply was just rude, demeaning, and incorrect. this still is a thing that happens quite frequently and i really do think that what i posted is relevant. like i said, i've been reading this forum for months without even having to create an account. it used to be easy to find answers. when i lose the patience to search for these answers because i can't sift through the root talk, i consider it a problem. i think you're a wealth of knowledge. please don't take offense, but also please don't be one of them.

I have absolutely no interest in "Simma", "Dan" or "Na" either. Perhaps instead of soiling the area with a search-unfriendly titled post and rant, you might consider asking your Droid related question or using the search. Most folks here are very friendly and willing to help. Just ignore the crabs and trolls. How can we help you today?

saturday night live ... Cheri Oteri ... simma dan na = simmer down now
"look up donna summers in the phone book ... what does it say ????? "
it was funny 10 years ago

i need no help. almost all the answers i needed have been answered by the very person i have been going back and forth with. this thread is based on the very thing you're telling me to do. please read it thoroughly. i appreciate your concern for my situation.

Oh C'mon, don't quit now... -Let's keep this going! lol

- The AndroidForums administration has already addressed this issue.

- Most of the "Here's the Link" type responders just don't feel like taking the time to explain it all. -But they did take the time to look up & post a link they thought could help you.

- Most of the "Search, you lazy Noob!" type responders don't realize that most new Droid owners are so overwhelmed that they don't even know what key words to put into the search, and even when they do, they are barraged by an overwhelming amount of crap that they have to wade through.

-Most of the "Just Root! Woot!" type responders don't know how to do what it is you're requesting. They simply took the easy way & rooted, and now everything is warm milk for them all the way. Many might not understand why anyone else wouldn't want to join them in their new Droid bliss. It does NOT, however, necessarily mean that they can't understand why anyone would not want to join them in their new-found higher plane of Android OS understand. No one is serving up Root-Woot flavored Kool-Aid, there is no Christian Root Crusade, and anyone who suddenly acts demeaning in his responses today because he rooted yesterday isn't an elitist, he's just an idiot, that's all.

- Riding a high & pompous horse on the Software Legality moral ground is a sure way to make enemies in a community filled with anxious consumers who each spent at least $300 bucks on a technogadget that was promised to have updated software chock full of goodies that didn't come. Someone brought it to the party like a giant bag of weed to share with everyone else. You can tell everyone to stop smoking it, or you can leave.

- Often someone mentions what clock speed and which ROM they are running as they are also having an issue and are looking for a pattern from other users with the same setup. (-It's not all about you.)

You're right, this forum has changed. But it has grown with the explosive expansion of this possibilities for the Android system, and thus our phones. We are all here for the same reason. Hopefully, with some gentle modding and construction, this board will become more friendly to users of every experience level. It has been a problem, is being worked on, and like anything else, needs time for the changes to come about. Complaining in the mean time will do no good. It is a difficult task without completely segregating the experienced users from the new users, and that just isn't a good solution, in my opinion.

@ OP - I think you should root. I rooted and OCd to 950 Mhz. After I did that, it solved the exact same issues you are having (threadjacking, root threads, etc). It's fantastic. I really think you should do it...Here is a link on how to root : LINK

Just kidding. I think the Rooting stuff in the general Droid forum will slow now that there is a subforum. I like to think most of the people here respond to noobs fairly well, but there will always be some who are rude/post links/etc...Just the way of forums in general...

i'm sorry if you think i implied that i personally am above rooting because of legal issues. as i stated, i flashed my old omnia a jillion times. i have read cases on this forum where the person IS against such things, and let's be honest, it's ok to be like that. it might make enemies, but if this is a forum that caters to legal versions of android software, i'm sure there's at least 1 person that can answer his/her question without resorting to illegal methods. please forgive me if you think i'm on a "high horse" about that issue... i am not.

i also agree with much of what you said in your reply. i am not speaking on behalf of myself as much as i am for the guys that really can't find what they need. again, i am no newbie to this board. it has been relatively easy for me. however, i am used to to smartphone forum methodology. after a year of modaco for winmo, it was easy to figure out the lingo of android. this is not the case for everyone. you are also correct about everyone who roots is not an elitist ....but they do pretend to be. that IS a problem. nothing worse than someone pretending to know, who doesn't know. it creates a lot of non-facts and false info that could lead to someone screwing up a $500 phone. not everyone has the "if you brick...it's not my fault" disclaimer.

i have not seen avatar, but i need to. i'm waiting for blu-ray. i'm lazy
