Root [How To] Root 2.3.4/downgrade and Get S-off

Status

I need help.
yesterday I OTA'd the new 2.3.4 and it ruined my Incredible..Dialer doesnt work, half the time the keyboard only times Q's, multiple force close popups among many more.

I have gone through your guide, and multiple others several times attempting to root it and then downgrade back..but everytime I try to root it with your method I still get error asking if new firmware version..as far as I know I am doing everything right...any ideas?

Have an important call tomorrow (later today) and with my phone being useless, need to find a fix asap.

Did you try a factory reset? A practical must after accepting an OTA.

Thanks a ton. Last night I completed the steps that you put together on page 1 and everything appears to have worked correctly. I now have S-Off and superuser access to 2.2. Having never done anything like this to my phone, I was a little iffy on what to do as much of the terminology was unknown to me, but step by step, everything worked out!

Thanks again for the help!

I tried the factory reset and it did nothing. The only thing it can do is load internet..and it now wont even do that..

I called verizon, my device is still under warranty and they overnighted me a new one for free..will be here today...

Although, I am worried it will come with 2.3.4 on it still..and with all the research I had to do about rooting to try and fix the phone..makes me really want to root it lol... Will the method in first post work?

All the steps are listed in the post I made on the linked page. Basically, when I try to hboot and run the update.zip for the 4.06.605.3 release (step 4 in the walkthrough), my device begins to load something (unsure as I am not able to select the restore function in hboot, nor able to select update.zip) then hits the red triangle screen.

After using unrevoked to root it, I have the capability of using small root required apps like tethering right? I don't have to downgrade to turn off s mode? And if i do the first step "root with unrevoke" I won't lose my data will i? If so I can just put everything on my SD Card? Sorry I'm a noob :)

Correct

Would just like to report I just did this (using the unrevoked method) on the latest gingerbread OTA update (patch included) on my wife's S-On phone.

Would also like to add that when Unrevoked finishes running and boots into clockwork recovery, you will receive an error in clockwork about "error processing ROM manager script" and so on...

Device 'vivow' is not supported at this time." What's up with that?
bdh
Well, its because the Vivow,or Inc 2 is not supported ;)

This thread is for the incredible 1.

A few pages back are links to downgrade vivow to the. 97 hboot so you can root via revolutionary. Other option is an expensive xtc clip

I assume that you're sure steps 1-3 were successful and you're running the stock recovery?

I've never used the stock recovery to run an "update.zip". It may be like PB31IMG in that you may need to just name it "update" for the phone to find it,because of the windows file extension hiding thing.

You could just as easily run an official ruu in the form of a .exe or an PB31IMG to get back to 4.06.605.3. At this point you can just wait for it to ota to 4.08. Then Simply follow the directions in the "regain root with s-off" thread.

Hope that helps :)

Edit: you could also just flash a custom gb rom in recovery. You're s-off now so you have alot of options to skin the cat :)

That's exactly what I ended up doing since I couldn't figure out what was going on with the failed message I was receiving. Ended up flashing to this ROM

[ROM] Incredible Stock OTA [RLS2] [4.06.605.2] [Android 2.3.4] [8/17/11] [Fast!!] - xda-developers

After flashing back to a stock 2.2 ROM, I re-ran Unrevoked to regain Clockwork, then flashed to the ROM linked above. So far, everything is working pretty good and I still have root access to get rid of the 'low disk space' error that started this whole endeavor. Still have S-Off and root.

I'll fully admit that this was the first time I have ever rooted an android, and it was definately an experience. I'm just glad I didn't totally kill my device.

:p

Thanks so much for putting this together. I'm a complete noob to rooting and I'm now rooted! I'm going to downgrade and go to S-OFF over the weekend and had a question before I do. I'd like to get back to my current configuration - same radio, same hboot and same rom as the OTA. Is there an easier way to do that than flashing nandroid backup, the hboot and radio separately?

And if I do have to flash all three separately, what order do I need to do it in?

Just have to flash the nandroid and radio, hboot didn't change. Can flash in any order.

You cannot accept an ota while running clockwork recovery. If you truly want to accept an ota, you'll need to re-install the stock recovery. S-off will remain.

However, remember why you wanted to root in the first place ;) the ota is not perfect.

IMO you'd be much Better off to to simply flash a custom gb rom. You'll then get the benefits of gb without the issues of the ota. If you want, you can even flash the gb radio in hboot.

Glad the guide worked out for you :)

I've installed the ClockWorkMod recovery but still don't have root. ROM Manager won't load for me. It just force closes everytime I try to open it. Root Checker says I don't have root.

So how do I, as you mentioned, "re-install the stock recovery". ClockworkMod recovery won't let me do anything. not even power down or reset.

I appreciate any insight anyone can provide.

I'm running on a newly aquired Incredible from Verizon service and updated to the latest OTA last night before trying this root procedure.

What have you done so far? Are you s-off?

If you've run unrevoked 3.22, clear data in the superuser app after trying to use a couple root only apps like titanium or rom manager. Superuser should work after that.

As far as clockwork goes, make sure you are using the optic trackball thingy to select menu options. Power button takes you back a screen, and from the main menu gives you the hat ;)

I've followed the instructions (precisely) up to running unrevoked 3.22, where it says:

"-you should now have the superuser app in your app drawer. if so,go to settings/applications/manage apps/superuser and clear data. test that superuser is working and granting permissions by downloading rom manager, and using it to flash the newest clockwork recovery. alternatively, download and run a "root checker" or any of your favorite "root only" apps and make sure they work."

I have super user app in my app drawer, but after downloading Rom manager, it won't run, just force closes.
