YES it is so worth it friend. You will not be disappointed. But do all the research for yourself and make an informed decision. Go into the TMO store and demo it for as long as you need! ask them which G1 has the new firmware cause the store I went into yesterday had one that has it. You will want to try and out.

The G1 is hands down the best phone i have ever owned or used. It is very inexpensive. Powerful. Is open source so you can fill your phone with apps and not actually spend a single cent. I have had mine since the beginning and only spent $1 total. That was for a comic because i like the free first issue and wanted to read more. If you are good programmer you can actually make decent money writing and selling apps and games. Oh and by the way, Googs actually pays their developers unlike certain CrabApples. Oh and we get a major update soon without having to buy a new phone. Awesome and actually quite stable for 1st gen product.
Yes there are some negatives like the ridiculously worthless battery, but an extra charger solves that. But thats really one of the few bad things. Some people will say the delay on cupcake is a negative, but as antsy as I am its not a real negative. They held it back because there is a security issue that needs to be resolved in the OTA. Feel free to message me if you need any other info:D

I love my g1 too. I have had it only a few weeks now, but its great. The battery isn't bad for me, I easily get a full days use from the charge. That's with some web browsing, plenty of texts and some phone calls. I usually end the day about 30% charge. It has dropped fast a few times, but that's usually due to some programs constantly being active, and probably programmed badly too.

But, as mentioned, go play with a g1 yourself. The size was the biggest issue for me, my previous phone was tiny, so took a while to get used to but I love it now. Don't just go by peoples opinions, cos if you don't like it then its an expensive opinion to follow.

Depends. What are you looking for your phone to do?
I'd read the reviews and go test one out.

But here is my opinion- Android is about to explode- you will soon see a flurry of phones coming out starting in July. Or at least that's what people are expecting- Acer, HTC Magic, HTC Hero, Samsung, Motorola, etc. So why not wait and see what else is out there?

If you buy a New phone that few people have bought or tried ... you will have a lot less support and reviews to go on .... and the phones will not have the track record of the G1 ....

Your original questions were good to ask about the G1... but on a new phone few will be able to answer anything about them... so you will then be the tester and have to tell others of the pros and cons ....

And There will probably be other new phones always on the horizon ....

OK, first we're gonna start with a bit of background here. I've had a cellphone since 2002 (I'm only 24 so...). Since then i've probably owned about 60 phones, at least 20-30 of those being smartphones. I've had Motorola's, Samsungs, Nokias, Palms, Sony/Ericcson's, Siemens, BlackBerries, the iPhone, other HTC phones and i'm probably missing some. As far as mobile OS's, i've used WM (2003, 5, 6, 6.1), PalmOS, iPhone OS, BlackBerry OS, Symbian and again, probably missing some here too.

That being said, the G1 is the best phone i've ever owned BY FAR. The ONLY complaints that i can't really call complaints are:

1. The battery life isn't grea, but that doesn't bother me. My phone is on a charger at work and at home so it's probably only off the charger for like 4hrs a day, if that.
2. I wish i could tether without rooting over something other than USB.

Those are my only 2 not big complaints with the phone. If the battery thing is a issue for you, you can buy a battery with double the life of the standard battery for $25.

I could go into how amazing the G1 is with ShopSavvy and Locale and all the other really, really cool apps, buf if you look around on the interweb a bit, you can see many other reviews of the really cool apps.

Honestly though...If my G1 failed tomorrow, i would go right out to a T-Mobile store and buy another one.

True, but the next one up is the HTC magic which is getting reviewed now and has the same hardware/software as the G1

The rest of the phones, I'd wait a month or two to see what the phone is like.

For the most part, I just go to gizmodo, engadget, cnet and get a blend of their reviews, plus the fanboy forums of the phone to get an idea of a phone, plus testing the phone out in person.

And There will probably be other new phones always on the horizon ....
Very true. But this is a unique time in Android's history. It got off to a slow start with the G1 and now several phones are coming out, this is the real start of Android so I'd wait. Next year if somebody says, "should I buy x phone or wait?" I'd just say get the phone because new phones will always be comin gout.

And don't forget- the internal memory is in the MBs for the G1.
