Root Cant get into recovery mode on htc evo 4g android v 2.3.3

I am trying to put a custom rom on my phone but for some reason I cannot get it into recovery mode. When I try the power+ volume button it just boots up normally. What am I doing wrong? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks. Also I am trying to install the destroyer rom. If there is a better one out there please let me know.

you are holding the power and the volume "down"... at the same time.... correct...

Ok first find out if you have fast boot on. If so turn it off. If your not sure about that process then shutdown phone and pull battery when you replace the battery then hold down the volume down and power button and it should give you hboot from there you should be able to get to get to recovery.

Havent used destroyer so couldnt tell ya. Xplod is a really decent AOSP ROM and most around here like MIKG in the Sense roms I like Swag in Sense and Eternity from VIRUS when I can get it to work correctly (still in alpha stages)

Alright that worked! But now when I go into recovery it shows a pic of the phone with a red triangle and an exclamation point going through it. What does that mean?

sounds like to me your recovery is not there. Hmmm The phone boots into the current ROM fine correct? What ROM are you on and what boot method did you use.

Also holding down the power and volume down does work if you have fastboot off.

Yes it does boot into the current rom. The current rom is just the stock rom it came with. Everything on the phone is stock as of right now. Ok so you have a bit of reading to do first. Your not rooted I take it. Can You type out what is on your hboot screen. If it says S-On you will need to turn that off. Read the Dummies Guide in My Sig. It is very well documented and will lead you to the right path.

Yep, red triangle means stock recovery. Chances are he is not rooted and first needs to root using rEVOlution

Alright thank you very much for the useful info I tried it and messed up somehow. Luckily my phone is ok but I lost everything, contacts, apps and all that. I will have to read all the info very carefully before I attempt it again.

Ya it isnt routed. I didnt realize you needed to do all that before switching roms. Before I go and try this again and risk losing everything do you guys think its even worth it? Are the custom roms that much better than the regular stock rom?

definitely worth it. most roms are now optimized to be very fast, and can get you better battery life (especially if you couple a rom with a custom kernel). i now can get between 18-30 hrs off charge consistenly. there are a lot of roms that have sense 2.1, sense 3.0, and sense 3.5 out now. if and when you root your evo, i would check out and flash mikg2.6. it is very fast, stable, and it has a combination of sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 built in. it is waaaaaaay better then stock IMO.

First off don't mention it thats why we are here. To help.

Second I have to agree with Ocn There are a lot better ROMS out there than the stock. You will probably read these in the rooting for dummies guide but a few things you always want to make sure you do;

Sync with Google - This will save all your contacts with Google so that when you change ROM's or even Phones You will have instant access to all your Contacts.

Have a regular backup routine - Titanium Backup (purchase Pro)is the best one out there IMO. However Titanium only takes care of your apps and app data Stuff like SMS/MMS and Call Logs are not covered by Titanium SMS Backup Restor is one for your SMS/MMS / Super Backup is one I've been testing lately It does SMS/Contacts/Call Logs. So you may have to try a few to find something that works for you. If you want to save voice mail then you will have to do that manually.

Last Is a Backup but its a Nandroid. Always Always Always do a Nandroid Before doing anything with your phone. Having that Nandroid could save you hours of frustration.

Alright well I am trying to do this but with the revolution I got it and am trying to run it but it just says waiting for device, it has said that for the past 15 minutes. I have the phone hooked up with charge only selected in the menu like I was told. Is it supposed to be taking this long?

ok did you follow the steps in the before rooting section of the guide? you need to make sure that u have usb debugging on. make sure that the phone is set to charge. also do you have the driver installed? and make sure that htc sync (including the driver that comes with it) is uninstalled as well. make sure that pda net or doubletwist is uninstalled.

also with that superuser file when you say put it in the root folder? I dont see a root folder after I formatted the sd card all I see is android secure, lost dir, and footprints.

from your computer. that is only if you have it installed.

you need to put the su file on the root of the sd card that means not in any folder. just on the card itself.

Yeah root of the SD card trips a lot of people up. It simply means that when you put it on your SD card, do not put it within any of the subfolders of the SD card, you want it on the topmost level. If you want you can think of the "top" of the SD card as the contents when you first open it, and then getting progressively deeper as you open more folders.

The most fool proof way to make sure its on the root of the card is to just go to "my computer" when you plug your phone into your computer and simply drag and drop your programs and files onto the sd card from my computer. This will prevent the files from accidentally going into a subfolder

Alright thanks Im making some real progress here. I am about to install my custom rom. Should I use a custom kernal too? If so which one? The rom I am using is the destroyer aka cm7 ex4. Does it matter which kernal I use or does it need to be compatible with that rom? Sorry for the newbie questions but this is my first time and I dont wanna ruin the phone.

Kernels fall into basically 2 types:

Kernels for sense
Kernels for AOSP

The ROM & Kernel download sticky breaks them up nicely for you. You will need a AOSP Kernel for CM7
