What's New: Android Gingerbread 2.3.6

I'm creating this thread to see and summarize what you guys have noticed that is changed with 2.3.6. Post what you guys have noticed.
I Just got mine OTA and installed successfully.
A couple of things I noticed are:

1) More free RAM, before I had around 100-135MB free, now I have 170MB free.

2) Home Screen does not go blank anymore. Before, when I ran heavy apps like games such as MC2 or Asphalt 6, I used to return home and it was blank for a good 5-10 seconds. I ran both games again, and this time - no blank home screen!

3) The phone is also giving me better & faster response.


Overall, I think this update optimized the software to the hardware, refreshed the phone, and made it smoother and faster. This is just about 15 mins after the update, will post again soon to confirm.

I also believe that memory managment has been vastly improved. I run several memory hogging apps like Tripit, Skype, Google+, Extended Controls and more and since the update, over two days ago, I am finding my Nexus much less sluggish and more responsive. Like you, I have around 30-40MB more free memory. A 'minor' update that seems to have a big positive impact.

A bug in Mail has been fixed (so far) that used to require a source close and restart of Mail to resume connectivity to M$ Exchange

I updated my Galaxy SII and I noticed the following:
1. Scroll lists, any attempt to scroll further a blue line comes up to indicate end of scroll.
2. PapaGo GPS fonts are better now (earlier was too small)

Besides that nothing that I'm aware of. Still trying to find out more.

The Glu game Blood and Glory will cause the phone to have a blank home screen if you back straight out from the game to a home screen.

Does anyone know if they are still pushing out OTA updates for 2.3.6? I have had my nexus for a little over a month and 2.3.4 is all that I have. I heard rumors that they stopped even sending out 2.3.6.

Just got in my used Nexus S today that i bought. It updated from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 right away!

Hello guys

I was backing up my phone, and noticed notification about Firmware upgrade.
So I did, upgraded to 2.3.6 and noticed that my Vibration icon appear on the top bar all the time. I had it set to ALWAYS, but it wasn't visible before the upgrade. I'm wondering if there is any way to turn the icon OFF?

Security was updated as well. There was a vulnerability where if you manually locked the phone but your screen timeout was set to anything other that instant, you would be able to get into the phone without credentials...All you had to do was click the unlock button, don't enter your credentials and let the phone lock itself again. Then click the unlock button again and you would not be prompted for your credentials...

Not anymore...

I'm disappointed: all the touch and especially multi-touch issues still occurs. Galaxy S is quite slower but more reliable and have a by far better multi-touch display.

after i update my Samsung galaxy Wonder to 2.3.6.. it fixed hangs up and black home screen... Some icons change but not a big deal for me... more faster that the older version of gingerbread... it never hangs again since i update my system.. it only took 15 mins. not bad at all... i hope there will be ICS update for samsung galaxy wonder

Hi all, i have upgraded my galaxy ace to android 2.3.6 via phone itself it took 40 mins for up gradation.here are some new features which i want to share.

1.blue colour added at the bottom and top .
2.battery improvement is amazing
3.home screen clock display shifted to bottom.
4.very fast and responsive.
5.new kind of notifications on home screen while msg,call comes.
6.new unlock system
7.fast charging,battery is not getting hot while charging.
8.in the gallery section added zoom in and out icons .but i found something wrong with the pan images its not smooth panning.
9.camera enchantments ,video recording is far better now (great improvement) .

Thanks for the info, dhawnanmohinish, but keep min mind that this is the Nexus S sub forum. Nexus S users have been on 2.3 from the start, so a lot of the changes you listed, particularly the UI changes, don't really apply to the Nexus S when upgrading to 2.3.6. It's good to hear that Samsung is still keeping its devices roughly up to date though

Does anyone know if they are still pushing out OTA updates for 2.3.6? I have had my nexus for a little over a month and 2.3.4 is all that I have. I heard rumors that they stopped even sending out 2.3.6.

My wife (Bionic) and I (Razr Maxx) just got our phones yesterday. She's still on 2.3.4, and mine came that way, but I immediately got an OTA update to 2.3.6 when phone was activated, so they must still be pushing out, but apparently only on some phones. Thankfully, my wife could care less what version she has, so, glad I got it! I can't comment because I came for HTC and the Motorola GUI is so completely different anyway. I may as well be on Ice Cream Sandwich for the complete new look I have.

Appreciate some guidance. Did you lose all the apps after upgrading from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6? I'm an SII user as well and facing the small PapaGo font at present. Thinking of upgrading but don't like the idea of losing all the apps and having to fresh install all of them again...

Typically updating (when using official update files) will not wipe your phone. In some rare cases, updating can cause some incompatibility with some setting or app you have installed and cause unexpected problems that lead to the need to do a factory reset.

General rule of thumb regarding updates: apply the update assuming you won't lose any of your data, but be prepared in the event that you do.

Anyways, I went ahead and did it and it took about less than 15 minutes. I don't see too much difference in anything. My question is: if I set the phone back to the factory setting, does it mean that it will go back to 2.3.5?

Since this thread is talking about the 2.3.6 update for the Nexus S specifically, not everything in it will apply to your Exhibit 2; however, doing a Factory Reset/Data Wipe will not revert you back to 2.3.5. You'll stay on whatever version of Android you're currently on.
