Droid Revolutionized Smartphones?

So as we all know, the Motorola Droid came out last November with a 550MHz processor, then was the fastest smartphone out on the market. Since then, the Nexus One with a 1GHz processor came out, and all the newer phones are announced to have increasing faster processors. With the Droid to be the first, did Motorola set the bar for the new generation of smartphones, or Superphones? Your thoughts?

No, other phones like the Palm Pre and iPhone had 550 mhz ish proccessors and they were released back in June...so if anything Motorola just copied Palm and Apple CPU wise. and HTC came out with the HD2 a while ago with a 1ghz proccessor so again Android really hasn't come out with a blazing fast phone that destroys the market.....Supersonic maybe???? Had Nexus One come out with 1.5 GHZ, now we can talk thatAndroid set the bar for smartphones/Superphones but until then, we can't say that

u think Moto set a new Smartphone standard. any other top tier phone that can't stack up next to the Droid or N1 can be placed right next to the Iphone, junk. The Iphone might have brought about the new age of phones, but the droid + Android started a revolution

I wouldn't say it's started a revolution, however I will say that the droid has presented the iPhone with some incredibly tough competition.

What's worse for Apple, is that the Droid is quickly becoming as common a household name as the iPhone, and it's earning a very good reputation as well.

Software wise it's just as easy to use as an iPhone, and perhaps with a slightly longer learning curve than the iPhone, it still manages to be user friendly.

Tech wise... it has a distinct advantage over the iPhone in many ways, but the biggest reasons in my opinion are A: Tactile Keyboard hidden under the screen. B: The user can replace their own battery. C: The user can also replace and/or upgrade their phone's storage.

Now people dont know the difference between Android and Droid. Thanks a lot Motorola and Verizon...both companies are mediocre at best.

To answer your question, NO. All it did was bring more people to android because it was sold by verizon.

Good marketing for a good product. I'm glad they came out with the droid cus Moto was really hurting for a while there.

Now people dont know the difference between Android and Droid. Thanks a lot Motorola and Verizon...both companies are mediocre at best.

To answer your question, NO. All it did was bring more people to android because it was sold by verizon.

Your comment wasn't much better than his. They are both great phones. Fanboy comments are bad enough when it is android/iphone, is it really necessary between two different android phones?

Yes, we all know advertising is a big reason the Droid is successful,but that doesn't make it any worse of a phone. Would you rather the Droid have no advertising and sell only 80K phones in a month? Any android phone becoming popular is good for all android phones.

I really dont think its even fair to call the droid a copy of the Iphone. The Droid is rugged and industrial in design while the Iphone is petite and stylish. I could go on and on about the diff but to keep on topic the Droid came out with the fastest processor and even the Iphone boys said that.

This. There's no need to fight amongst ourselves over something so trivial.

If marketing is part of the reason that the Droid is so well, then marketing has obviously done it's job (for once). I got my droid because of word of mouth from people (friends) who already owned one. I was due in for an upgrade (actually... I had my old phone for more than 4 years, and it barely worked) so I got a Droid. I'm extremely happy with my phone and considering what I had before it, I wouldn't care if there are better phones out there because the phone suits my needs and then some.

As far as my life goes, the Droid has changed the way I operate in a big way since now I can do much more than simply text and place calls with my mobile device. So on an individual level, the Droid has revolutionized the way I do things, and what I think a phone should be and should have.

On a macro level, I still think the Droid has made an impact because before the Droid, the iPhone and Blackberry were the two biggest names in phones. The iPhone was aimed at people who wanted to listen to music and browse the internet sometimes, and the Blackberry was aimed at goal oriented people who liked having a PDA to organize themselves. The Droid may not have been the first to do it, but it provided a happy medium for people who wanted a little bit of both, and not only has it managed so far to become as popular as both the Blackberry and iPhone, but it's also drawn some attention to the other phones like the N1 and G1. I'd never heard of either of those phones before I had started doing my research on the Droid, and I'm sure most of the general public still hasn't either.

Every WInmo or Android Forum out there, there is a thread crowning their phone as being the king. In an Apple forum, the king is determined by Apple not the users.

i think the iphone 3g was clocked at 412mhz. the iphone 3gs which came out june 2009 has a cortex a8 proc clocked at 600mhz and same with the palm pre. Unless both the iphone 3gs and palm pre were underclocked to 550mhz like the droid was. Am not sure on that but proc types are same on all of them.

i like, and type very well on, my moto droid keyboard. i find verizon service to be 5 times greater than tmobile's. My droid is clocked in at 1.1ghz now. You are still stuck at 1ghz. I can wifi tether with my droid, you can't. I can maintain calls in the center of my office building, in the stair well and in the elevator. With tmobile, you can't. I get 3g everywhere i go. With tmobile, you don't.

So what do you have left? 512mb ram. Well, i always have between 30-45mb of free ram according to systray monitor so it has never been an issue for me and everything opens and runs smoothly.

So why do you "die a little inside" when someone mistakes your Nexus One for a Droid? You should be happy they thought you owned the superior phone on the superior network

The only thing DROID did was put Android on the map. Sorry to all the MT3G and G1 brethren, but putting 2 million units into the hands of users has a way of increasing the popularity of the operating system. DROID made OS2.x the OS to have and definitely pushed Google to put something better in the N1. But DROID did not revolutionize much of anything. It increased Motorola's profile and put them on the map as a veritable device manufacturer.
