You can find your answer here how to root Samsung Galaxy Gio: http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...0-ace-s5830-gio-s5660-pop-i559-fit-s5670.html

About custom rom wait for answer from someone else.

I would recommend flashing a custom rom

there arn't that many for GiO but the one im using is a pretty comfortable and bugfree one...from my experience...

Im using GioPro Lite v1.2
its android 2.3.4 rooted :)

Download Odin
Odin 4.42.rar
it contains an ops for gio

flash this(GioProlite1.2) using odin
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/36030786/g...mniY-S5660XXKQ6_S5660XXKQ5_S5660SEBKQ1.tar.7z

my MUST recommendation is to factory reset before AND after the flash
i cant emphasize enough on this

and do make sure you have 70%+ charge when you attempt this

Hope this helps :)

Having custom ROM has both good and bad sides. You really can lose some functions or brick your phone if you don`t know what you`re doing. I don`t advice anyone who doesn`t feel confident he can accomplish it to do it, BUT when you succeed you get much better performance and battery life.
After changing my ROM I got 2x+ benchmark score and it goes more than Galaxy S does.

My advice is if you want to change it go to someone you trust knows what he`s doing. :)

Cheers!

Nice it worked!! Ive been waiting like 2 week before using it in order to correctly root it.

Thanks a lots! I also agree on avoiding custom rom.. i prefer to keep the rom the wait it is to ensure it will still be compatible with the hardware.

bro,
Im also goin to buy a GIO, probly nxt week.... will i get it with Ginger bread out of the box ???...wow... u 're so lucky to have 2.3 out of the box man...

anyway, can i safely ROOT may GIO that runs Ginger bread,(if i was lucky) using the above mentioned "universal" method ?? DID IT REALLY WORK FOR U ???

From my experience flashing custom rom is a bad way for rooting. You can lost IMEI, Non functional GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth or stuck in a bootloop logo. In simple words you can brick your phone becouse of the lack of CSC file that is not compatible with your firmware that you already have.

The best way for rooting your phone and keep your firmware untouched is this:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UNIVERSAL GINGERBREAD ROOT SAMSUNG GALAXY GT-S5570, GT-S5660, GT-S5660M, GT-S5660L, GT-S5830, GT-B7510

This is only for the people that they are using Gingerbread and can't root their phone with SuperOneClick. You can root your phone with Universal_GB_ROOT.zip file for your phone model.

Question: How do I Root Gingerbread on my phone?

Answer:

- Download the Universal_GB_ROOT.zip file and put in your SD card.
- Turn off your phone
- Make shure you start the phone like this : Hold Power Button + Home Button
- You will see your phone booting in recovery mode
- Move in the menu with the Volume - Volume + to scroll up and down and choose "apply update from sdcard" with the Home button.
- Choose your Universal_GB_ROOT.zip file that you copy in the root on the sdcard and press Home button to apply it.
- You will see a message "Install form sdcard complete".
- Then press on the "reboot system now" and you are done.

Does anyone know if this method works for Telus T959P Galaxy 4G? Super 1 click didn't work on this phone, updated to 2.3.4

All these steps also worked perfectly on my Bell Gio S5660M.
But after I put a Rogers sim card and reboot, it still says 'Network locked'.
What else do I need to do so it would work on Rogers?
Need to add APN?

How can I tell if it has been rooted?
Thanks.

StonyBoy Tony or any otjer member:

Are you sure the Universal Gingerbread Root really roots the GIO using 2.3.4 on the Bell network ? I used the Universal GB root program and got the message at the end saying the phone was now rooted. Yet, I went to install Rom MAnager from the Marketplace and it wouldn't let me because the phone is it thinks the phone is not rooted. Also, if it is rooted, shouldn't I be able to delete the Bell apps (or at least those I don't want)? I can't seem to do that either.
I'm new at this so may you can shed some light.

Thanks

Thanks for a newb-comprehensible method.

However, I last flashed a RAZR about 4 years ago so "total newb" is close to describing me!

Question: Do you need to unzip the universal file before loading it onto the sd card?

I didn't - I just copied it to a clean micro and when I started the phone I got a red warning screen first, asking if I really wanted to risk damaging the phone by rooting?, but if so, to begin the install. I then upped the volume key and did not get a menu, but a virtually blank screen with "downloading" on it and no further options. I waited 15 minutes, then finally gave up and tried to turn off the phone. It was completely non-functional - I tried every combination of buttons and times I could think of. Finally, heart in mouth, I took out the battery. Fortunately it rebooted fine as I figured since it didn't appear to have started any install.

Any idea what happened or what to do next? Does my question above contain the answer?

If you want to UNROOT your phone you can use the Universal_GB_UNROOT.zip | Game Front apply the same way as for the Rooting

Worked great for me. Tried 2 other root files that didn't work. :):):)

I found this article from May 2011 (google search it as I can't post the link here):

The 10 Best Android Apps that Make Rooting Your Phone Worth the Hassle

Superuser Allows Other Apps Root Access (I know this is required)

Titanium Backup Automates System Backups (will definitely get this)

ShootMe Takes Screenshots with a Shake

Metamorph Applies Visual Themes to Anything

Adfree Blocks Ads Anywhere on Your Phone (will likely give this a shot)

SSH Tunnel Encrypts All Internet Traffic on Your Phone (when is this required?)

Tasker Can Automate Almost Any Task

SetCPU Controls the Speed and Behavior of Your Phone's Processor (will definitely get this as this can extend battery life significantly)

Busybox Adds True Linux Commands to the Android System

Wireless Tether Turns Your Phone into a Wi-Fi Hotspot (Is this required on the 2.3.4 Gingerbread firmware which already has the wifi hotspot feature?)

Any other apps worth mentioning. I will only use this phone mostly for creating wifi hotspot though I wish I could bluetooth tether the Gio to a Playbook.

Hey StoneBoyTony, is rooting really this easy? My Gio is on stock 2.3.4 and I'd like to use StepCPU. Thanks for sharing the steps by the way.

Hey Guys ,I will be moving this discussion to the All Things Root Sub-Forum :)

And probably add some stuff before moving

This Method will work on all Gingerbread and Froyo versions .

Unlike SOC,z4root which use exploits to root ,we are directly updating the system using recovery .

Samsung bml i.e. Stock Recovery is preferred over CWM because Stock ROMs use rfs file system and Clockwork mod usually uses ext2/3/4 filesystems.
That means your Stock Samsung system cant be read by Clockwork
Mod

So if you want to root a stock ROM/firmware then Samsung Stock Recovery is a must.

This method works 99% of times .
The 1% it doesnt work is when carriers or samsung releases a firmware which has less than 2MB of free space in the /system folder .
At that time the superuser.apk and su binary is not copied to the system properly .
Root checkers will say it is rooted but in reality your root wont work .
There is an alternative zip but it varies from carrier to country .

I think your carrier has bloated the system so root is not properly installed .

Probably the recovery is broken and you need Stock Samsung recovery to root it without any problems .

You went into Download Mode instead of recovery Mode
