Verizon Skype For Eris next month!! - What r the benefits?

Yes, it's true Skype will not use up your Verizon Minutes. However, the reason it won't use your minutes is that it only works using your WiFi Connection, which is data. So, to use Skype you will have to find a WiFi location that you can connect to. That means, your wireless router at home, the airport, Starbucks, Panera Bread, etc. It only makes sense if your at home or you purposely plan on going to a WiFi location to make international calls.

Then why did they announce that you'll be able to do it via 3G? This will allow you to use Skype anywhere you get a 3G signal, not just WiFi.

Here is the link to the story

Verizon Wireless and Skype Join Forces To Create A Global... -- BARCELONA, Spain; BASKING RIDGE, N.J.; and LUXEMBOURG, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ --

The basic just of this is that Skype-to-Skype calls will be free (as it's always been) and available overt the 3G network. Yosef is correct when he (or she) says that it's only available by WiFi, it is, for now. Just like the Eris upgrading to 2.x, good things come to those that wait. It's sounds like these two things are coming about the same time, in March (since the end of march is the end of the first quarter).

I believe the announcement said that Verizon-Skype will ONLY run over 3G, not WiFi. Reason is that Verizon wants to sell more data plans. Allowing Skype over Wifi would canabalize their calling plans. I think they also said that while Skype to Skype is free (other than the requisite data plan) Skype to regular phone is charged against call plan minutes. Details remain to be seen.

I've never used Skype or GV. Are those features not available from Skype? What other advantages does GV offer?

I use skype to talk to friends in other countries. It is great for overseas communication, but it won't really replace what google is doing with google voice domestically.

GV - Text, voicemail and domestic calls
Skype - IM and international calls

i think this is a threat to GV...
cause skype does text...does voip...vzw has visual vm...
you get a skype number and you can buy skype credits.
google voice does still have its advantages.
it was built from the ground up to work with a cell phone unlike skype.
skype has a bigger name obviously (in terms of the name Skype vs Google Voice). if skype makes an app thats mobile centric and change alot of features in favor of mobile...google voice would have a serious contender.
