HTC Hero - Black Screen On Shutdown

My wife and I purchased Sprint Hero's about 2 months ago and LOVE them! We do have one issue: Sometimes when we go to shut the phone down at night for re-charging, instead of getting the popup screen to shut down the phone, turn sounds off, set vibrate, go into airplane mode, etc...the screen just goes black. Sometimes it takes several tries of hitting the power button, turning the screen back on, and hitting the power button again before we finally get the pop-up screen to turn the phone off.

If the issue was with just one of our phones, I would think it was a phone problem. But since we both have the same issue, I'm thinking we're doing (or not doing) something that is preventing the Hero from turning off. Perhaps a running app or something?

Anybody else have this issue, or am I the only one? And if this is a common prob, can somebody let me know what I am or am not doing to correct the situation? The phones documentation makes no mention of any special sequence to go through to shut the phone down.

Thanks in advance! These Forums are AWESOME!!!

I/we have tried barely holding the red key down, holding it down for 2 seconds, 4 seconds, etc.

This is an intermittent problem. Sometimes we get the popup screen just fine on the first shot. Other times, it takes us several tries.

I think you might have hit on something, though; I think when we push the red/shut down key, instead of getting the shut down popup, it actually puts the phone to sleep. Does this make sense, and if so, is there a way around it?

Thanks for the reply! Any other opinions?

By George, you got it! We've been pushing the red key for a couple of seconds, then releasing it and waiting for the screen to pop up. Since I read your post, I've been pushing and holding it down until the screen shut down comes up. Works like a charm!

Thanks Sir!

Same thing happens to me at times. Whether it's just my finger moving a bit and losing contact with the key, or what, but it happens.

Oddly enough, I occasionally have an issue where the phone won't come back out of sleep unless I press the power or menu button a couple times. Not exactly a big deal though.

Glad it's working!

I most certainly will! Since we got our Hero's (which by way, we LOVE! Did I say that already? ;)), we have spent a great deal of time on AndroidForums. Great phone, great Forum...what more could we ask?

The posters here are knowledgeable, and everybody really seems helpful to each other. Kudos to whoever moderates this board!
