Not restore to phone but can be saved for viewing on HTML, Spreadsheet ... etc

the one that I have, that I think is the best, is free and called "SMS Backup"

What it does, is, it basically forwards your SMS/MMS messages to your gmail account. The genius of it is that it archives them and labels them "SMS". So they skip the inbox, thus avoiding a "new mail" notification. It shouldn't even be that hard to set up a filter in gmail so they're automatically marked as "read" too, although skipping the inbox is good enough for me. It threads them just like gmail does with regular emails. The subject is "SMS with _contact name_". I haven't seen what it does with MMS, but I imagine it is the same.

While this does not allow you to restore them back to being text messages, it is way better than Txtract (the free one doesn't work with cupcake, thanks dev!) which converts them to a file type you can't easily open on your phone. You can have this run in the background (which looks like it can take a couple minutes to do on it's own) or you can do it manually with the app.

I really do love this app, because now I can just delete threads and texts all the time without really having to worry too much about losing them. One of the things that can make your phone laggy is having lots and lots of text messages saved on it. So clearing out your SMS and your browser cache/history can keep your phone running smoother.

I also use the gmail sms backup tool, the author is looking into a restore function and thinks it should be available soon and easy to do.

Thanks for sharing. My world is officially rocked. If only I could import the 8000 messages from my WinMo and do that same thing... Oh well.

Okay, so it's quite an old thread... did the restore from Gmail get implemented?

I've been using Sprite Backup, but my file wont restore on my Desire, I don't know why and they haven't responded to my e-mail.

I can restore my Nexus One and back my Text's up with something else, would people still recommend the Gmail backup?

I use MyBackup Pro which is a paid app, (there is a free version called MyBackup, but not sure if sms backup is enabled or not). Anyway, the paid version can backup and restore sms directly on the phone.

"SMS Backup" on the android market, free...works very well. You can even have your google calendar index by date...if you're in to that kind of thing.

I also use SMS Backup and Restore SMS Backup & Restore - Android Stuff - great little application, although I have noted a that some of the SMS' have the wrong phone number attached for a sent SMS - have the number of the person I sent to rather than my number??

The support from the developer is great - easy to contact and very helpful. Guess I need to contact about this - just haven't had a chance to do so yet.

I'm thinking about installing "SMS Backup and Restore". It's had good reviews on the marketplace, but I don't like the fact it needs access to my contacts.

Having looked into the app in more detail, I realise that it needs access to my contacts so that it can add the contact names to the backup file. I think there are enough good reviews that it won't be a problem.
