Help Push email to Android from gmail?

I had heard it was possible to get push notifications for email on Android. I.e. have emails come straight through rather than have the phone constantly poll the server wasting bandwidth and battery.

I recently switched from yahoo to gmail for this, yet in my email settings I still have update frequency as a setting...

How do I enable push notifications for email?

I am using an up to date HTC desire hd.

Thanks for any help...

Use the gmail app for gmail push notifications and remove the gmail account from the stock mail app.

I've removed the old mail account and set myself up with the latest gmail app.

Still not working, I've checked that "Notify in status bar when email arrives" is enabled in the gmail app settings but I am still not seeing email notifications... Are there any other steps I've missed?

Thanks

For the notifications to work, you need autosync enabled (despite it being push). Is autosync on?

now it works. simple as that!

Interesting becuase I am not getting true push from my HTX One X with ICS 4.0.3.

It takes anywhere from 10 secs up to 4 mins :)rolleyes:), mobile data & wifi connected, autosync enabled.

I moved over from iOS (ip4) where using GOOGLES Exchange server, m.google.com I got instant push email, less than 5 secs usually :D

I tried the same on the droid mail app but basic email doesn't even work with the similar settings (server: m.google.com and blank domain basically).

I saw one guy say he got it (instant push) working (his post here goo.gl/cEUUB), but my visible settings are not the same so..

..Still trying. -> Can you post your gmail push times roughly by any chance? Thanks.

I'll ocassionally get the notifications on my OX before they appear on my PC. I'm using the dedicated gmail app though, not the mail app.

Sorry I did not mention, I tried the Gmail app first of course, everyone seems to say it pushes..

I tried it again just in case but no, pushes can be anywhere up to minutes.

So you say occaisionally, whats the average, or like the common or the max etc?

Thanks I appreciate it. This is still a work in progress, I am seeing threads everywhere that desire hd works with the Exchange but, this is ICS 4.x so different I think.

Maybe have to try k9 I'm not sure I've only been on Android for <24hrs now. I like it a lot but little tiny things like this count for me.
