Help Wifi Tether / Hotspot App Question (How far to root?)

Hi,
I came here out of the sole interest in using "Wifi Tether" for rooted phones. I've yet to root my Dinc2 phone. Before doing so I wonder how much modding I need to do to get this app to run.
I've reviewed the basic rooting procedures for downgrade to 2.3.3, S-OFF and installing CWM and then superuser access. My question is, will "Wifi Tether" work after this root procedure on Dinc2 or do I need to do more? Meaning do I need to install and alternate rom or kernal, or will it work with just root access?

About the root itself. Does the basic root procedure leave the phone as it was just with root access? Or will i have to reset everything up? Will original Apps etc still work?

If I need to go further than just rooting, any pointers as to what direction rom/kernal I should go that is closest to the standard HTC setup (Sense)?

Thanks!

Rooting should do nothing more than give you super user access to the phone's os and allow you to run things like "wifi tether" or "Barnacle" to tether. You shouldn't need to do anything else to your phone (besides making that NAND backup immediately after rooting!). Everything should still be there and working.
Good luck, and welcome!

Ok, that's encouraging, and thanks for the kind welcome. I'd love to really dig in and try some roms but not a lot of freetime lately (new child). Though I know once I get this working I'll want more.

So basic root should allow me to run those hotspot apps? Have you or can anyone else confirm they've run this on a Dinc2 with just the basic root?

The app's page mentioned possibly needing a kernel. code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ I think this is just for older phones?

The page also has a wiki link in the bottom left corner abotu HTC phones. It talks about Incredible but not Incredible 2.. again I suspect tis is not realtvie to Dinc2.

I want the hotspot for my Wifi Tablet so cannot USB tether with PDAnet.

I had stumbled across the DUN change but they were all old posts so I assumed VZ has patched that by now. There is a sept 8-11 reply says it still works. Seems VZ updates will fix it and you can apply it again. hmmm.

Did Barnacle WIFI work stock or basic root?

There is a pdanet out for tablets, might still be in beta but I saw users having luck...

Yes Barnacle worked on stock rooted Gingerbread.

Try the native tethering first if the only reason you want to root is for tethering.

TAR thanks for all the help. You've answered all my questions an dI have a couple of solutions now. I tried the Native Tether and it does work. I read Barnacle and like on rooted devices is faster so now with your confirmation I might still try it. Also the PDAnet Beta tip was nice! It looks like they're working on bluetooth tethering. and the beta is free.
