Help Playing videos on NT

Trying to decide between NT and Fire (as are many people) and I've been searching on how to load my own videos on the NT. The only things that seem to be popping up on Google are apps they want you to buy to rip DVD's. I don't need that I just need to know if I can connect the NT to a computer and copy files to it. Where to copy them and such.

load a microSD into a card reader and copy/paste them into the card. Then use the card into the tab. thats probably you're best bet without rooting.

So you can't just connect the Nook Tablet to a computer via USB and copy over? Not that copying to a card is the worst thing ever just not as convenient.

You can do that but the problem is space. They allow you one GB of storage out of the built-in 16 gigs of space. kinda crappy but thats it until full root. Until root comes along the card reader and microsd card are gonna be the best bet.

WOW!!! so the OS takes up the whole internal memory w/o hacking?

No. They reserve that space for apps and books plus the OS. You can only use 1GB for your own music, videos, etc. unless you add a microSD.

That's correct. If I remember right, a clean install is 3 GB. This leaves to with 12 GB that must be used with b&n apps, music and videos and 1 GB for your own stuff. Not quite fair if you ask me but they are essentially a bookstore trying to survive in an electronically dominated world

IMO its faster to write to the memory card with a HDSC reader than it is USB. I remember when I had my droid incredible file loading via USB took awhile for media.

As far as videos my redbox rips to VOB (full disc to 2.7-3GB) play great with no lag and perfect quality so no wasting time to convert I'm using the same files that I play on my flat screen TV; yes they are big but I don't need 20 movies with me at all times anyway

That Mx Media Payer is awesom it plays anything MP4 (apple formats), wmv, VOB, avi but those are all I tried so far.

I got the NT 2 days ago and I can't put it down

Can someone who owns a NCT clarify for me. Does B&N have movies for sale to download to the Nook like the Fire? Or is it all Netflix and Hulu?

I've owned a Nook Color Tablet for less than 48 hours, but so far, it's playing everything that I ask it to play. Instead of loading movies on it, I play videos using my Buffalo NAS which holds about 1.8 TB of video. I've tried several players, but only MX Player plays everything without complaint. I use ES Explorer to browse the files on the NAS, then MX Player to play them.

Don't be afraid to root your NTC. It took me less than five minutes to root my NCT using in the instructions at How to root the Nook Tablet ? Cell Phones & Mobile Device Technology News & Updates | Geek.com. After you root it, you'll want to install a home screen alternative (not a replacement, per se, since you can't kill B&N's native home screen) and install Homecatcher so that you can always get to your homescreen. Once, there, install your favorite apps and you'll have a fantastic little video player.

I just read up on the buffalo thing that you have. Do you access it like a server web address and log in? is there any lag to it?

Buffalo can serve up its data in a wide variety of ways. For example, it can be an FTP server and if you forward the right ports in your router, you can easily access it from the other side of the planet. It's a DLNA server. But I just use it as a simple file server. I'm on my second (I outgrew the first; it still runs fine) Buffalo NAS, which is \\Buffy2 on my network. My pcs access it as \\Buffy2, but my Android devices just see it as \\192.168.1.105. I have several "shares" on it, but the \Video share is set to require no credentials to read the data. Using ES Explorer to browse to \\192.168.1.105\Video on my Samsung Droid Charge, Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 1838 and Nook Tablet, I can play any video on my NAS if I pass it to MX Player.

If you search Amazon for "NAS" and "RAID" you'll find several Buffalo models and about five dozen of various competitors. There are other brands that you can buy for less, but I'm very sold on the quality of Buffalo. My current unit has a four-disk RAID-5 array. It's as dependable and as easy to configure and use as you could ask for.
