On my xperia I left it overnight charging and i've now come back to it and the orange led is now red and its just powered off. I've pressed the 'power on' button and its now displaying in the centre of the screen a battery with a lightning bolt through it, and doesnt proceed any further. i had installed some new apps like 'juice defender' and 'battery booster' before hand. Will the little beastie recover from its discharge and recharge itself if I just leave it alone for a few hours please?

If the LED is red, and you get a big battery symbol on the screen, the battery is nearly dead.

Are you sure it was plugged in securely? Are you sure the power cord still works?

Are you using the original Sony USB cord and the original Sony charger with your phone?

I would suggest to pop the back off the phone. Remove the battery and leave it out for 5 seconds, then again plug it in.

Test your plug outlet too and make sure it works.

If the problem persists, I would suggest you try and find a replacement battery....or go to a store or get a friend that has the same battery and test it out.

Hopefully it still charges and it doesn't have to do with the charging port.
