Help Difference Between "Email" and "Gmail" Apps

So what is the difference between the "gmail" app that is on the Nexus and the "email" app that is on there as well? I'm not using the "email" app or have it setup and just the "gmail" for now. However I do not get any notifications in the top left when I receive an email nor does my LED light flash letting me know I have a new email.

Is one better over the other? At one point last night both had been setup on the phone, but deleted my gmail account info from the email app and just now have the gmail app running. Do I need to use the email app instead to receive email alerts?

Hmm..opened up my gmail app, went into settings, but do not see an option for notifications. Also went into the phone settings as well and do not see anything there either.

Sorry about that, I haven't got my phone yet, figured it would be standard. Here's something someone said to turn off the notification ringtone, perhaps what you want is in the same place?

"Go to Settings; tap the account you want to change under Account Settings; scroll to the bottom and select Labels to notify; tap Inbox then Ringtone; and select Silent; Done."

To piggyback on this, I'm having a terrible time setting up my school email account. I set it up just fine on my blackberry, but it's being ultra-stubborn. I don't know if it's a pop3, imap, or exchange account? But I've tried each option. POP3 and IMAP say "Couldn't open connection to server." Exchange gives me "You typed an incorrect server address or the server requires a protocol version that Email doesn't support."

ALL of my email is done through my school address. This is going to be very frustrating if I can't get it to work. Anyone have any insight, tips, anything? The address is xxxxxxxxxxxx@msu.edu, if that helps at all.

The Email App doesn't support PUSH notifications...
I have my corporate email account linked and push works just fine.

The only thing with email I can't figure out is how to include an LED notification for either gmail or email. I tried LightShow based on suggestions here, but I found that the LEDs don't stop blinking until you launch the associated app, even if you checked the email via the computer leaving you with no unread messages.

I would think your school IT website would have instructions for accessing their email server.
