Always Wipe! (before flashing)

Lol, figured I'd throw this out there since I just forgot, AGAIN.

Anytime you're trying out a 1.6, 2.0, 2.0.1, or 2.1 ROM, you need to Wipe BEFORE flashing the new ROM, or before going back to an older version with a nandroid backup. If you don't, it'll sit there on the HTC logo forever.

Damnit....I hate it when I forget to wipe :p

Please be patient with a few noob questions (I pre-searched here and at XDA, but I guess I've searched poorly, because I think I'm more confused now).

The only ROMs I've flashed so far are Fresh 1.1 and Gumbo Kernal. I'm kind of curious to compare alternatives like MoDaCo 2.2 and the MoDaCo Kernal, plus I'm curious to check out AOSP 2.1.

1. When I wipe the phone, is this the same or similar to a hard factory reset?

2. Is it still rooted when it comes back up?

3. Will I still have my contacts and data?

4. Will it reformat my SD card, so I need to back up the SD card prior to the wipe?

5. While I'm at it, I've read that Apps2SD is both supported and included in Fresh 1.1, but I can't find it. My card is formatted in FAT32; is that my problem?

Thanks for your help.

1.) Very similar. Pretty much removes everything from the phone.
2.) Still rooted.
3.) Your contacts will be erased, but if they're google contacts, they'll sync back from your google account when you sign back in
4.) Won't touch your SD card
5.) For apps2SD, your card has to be partitioned. I haven't done it in quite some time, so I can't remember how it's got to be partitioned
