Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

I'm rooted/unlocked, but haven't really done anything else with my phone as far as mods requiring root. However, I do want to install the "system" version of Nova Launcher (I'm already using the app version...like it pretty well.)

How do I do that? I think I'm supposed to simply put the .apk file in the /system folder, but then what? Restart the phone with the volume buttons and power button depressed? If so, then what? help? Gotta admit I'm a noob when it comes to rooting, modding my phone (but this Nexus is too good to pass up on that!)

According to the XDA thread, either move the .APK file to /system or download the .ZIP file from the thread (linked below) and flash through Clockwork Recovery.

Normal apps and system components come odex'd - for a given apk file, there may be a corresponding odex file. The odex file contains any/all part of the app already optimized for loading into the Android cache.

Not all apps have that. Those that don't, create the equivalent on-the-fly and over use.

The advantage of a de-odexed rom is that you can theme it.

Use EStrong's File Explorer, menu->settings, click on root explorer, go to /system/app to see the various odex files that go along with their apk files.

Hope that helps.

What does everyone here do for work (or student)? Just curious to see if relates to time spent on here.

I am a 23 year old college graduate (May 2011) working at UBS doing Business Intelligence Administration for our reporting applications.

Been a paramedic for 15 years now doing IT work for Emergency Medical Services in my area.
Soon to be working on my Bachelors in IT and Project Management.

I can't do the same thing forever...

Congrats on graduation!

Thank ya. It was a long 5 years but well worth it. Hopefully going back soon to finish my masters degree. Also want to get my MBA at some point.

Working through the Lehman collapse was the best experience I have ever had in the workplace though -- it was absolutely crazy.

On-topic (what?!) -- I love, love, love this phone.

Eh....tried using Astro to copy it, but it said it was a read only folder. Thoughts?

I haven't tried installing CWM yet...what's the best thread to follow to do that? I really am not sure about "flashing" these programs yet....gotta "learn up" on that. :)

Just got my extended battery, chargin' it right up. What was the verdict on using the extended cover with the stock battery? Does it require a shim?

Haven't tried that yet. My guess is that the stock battery won't come out far enough to disconnect you, but something like the NFC stuffs might have issues as I have had to re-seat a battery to get that to work even with the correct cover. Don't think it would take more than some tissue or napkin to fill any gap that is there to be on the safe side yet and haven't had the battery get hot enough for that to seem dangerous yet.

Couldn't you just do the opposite? Use the stock battery cover with the extended battery then carry around the stock battery? That's what I do...Works great.

QUESTION!!

Hey peeps, so I just got a replacement phone for issues that I was having. And I just activated my new phone and noticed the phone came unlocked right out of the box. It has a padlock on the google screen. How is this possible. Does that mean that someone somewhere already was tinkering with it or did I simply get an unlocked phone that slipped through the cracks?

You need Root Explorer or EStrong's File Manager becuase those allow /system to be mounted as Read/Write so that you can move the APK there. Astro doesn't have root permissions in the app so it can only read the /system directory.

I'm 31, married, no kids, 2 dogs, prosecuting attorney in Chicago (but have the day off today!).

So I just flashed the 4.0.3 AOSP rom.

Very smooth! I think I actually like this one better than Universal HD!

Did you wipe before going to 4.0.3? I wish the stock launcher could back up my icon positions.

Honestly, it sounds like someone was tinkering and then returned it without relocking the bootloader. I highly doubt you would get an unlocked phone right out of the box from Verizon.

Bless you Steven! I thought I was going to have to lie about my age!

Married, 54 year old airline pilot with daughter 18 and son 15.

My first computer was a "portable" Columbia (IBM "clone") that weighted about 25 pounds had a 9" green crt, TWO 360k floppy drives and of course ran on MS-DOS. Cost - $4000 in 1983.

Yeah, I wiped data and cache manually from recovery, then flashed the rom, then the GApps zip.

Worked great, except my apps had to be reinstalled.

That's weird.

Well, FYI when I went to Verizon the last time, I asked if I could see the first phone I exchanged to compare screens.

They said they had been testing it and brought it from the back.

It was in Odin boot for some reason.

I definitely locked it back up before return, so they must have unlocked it.
