Expand FM frequencies

Aviation frequencies are AM. It seems pretty unlikely that the radio tuner was designed to pick up that part of the spectrum, especially amplitude modulated.

Are you sure? Did they change from FM? I think I remember years ago that you could sometimes get aircraft interference on your FM radio if you tuned up about 107.9 - I remember hearing them talk.

Aviation VHF voice frequencies go from 118.000mhz to 136.975mhz. Navigational aids such as VORs, VORTACs or VOR-DME broadcast at 108.000mhz to 117.975mhz (these are normally not voice channels and if tuned in you will usually only hear morse code). They are amplitude modulation signals.

I'm not sure what you were hearing tuned into FM at that frequency. Probably taxis or something.

WTF , back in the day you would take a little transistor radio and open it up and offtune the little clear box in the back with 6 or so little flat head tuning screws on the back after setting the tuner to 108fm and turning them till the closest station to that went down the band and then tweek that screw the whole way and would get up to the 118-123mhz easy and i am sure its FM not AM because I was able to understand the tower at SeaTac Airport , Auburn Municiple and Renton Washington airports. I guess if i look at the scanner I use now it will say the mode for that band but also with linux as android is you should be able to either make it do it yourself or find someone who has opened up the I/O control to expand the tuner like you would on old ISA FM cards and should be able to get up to the 2 meter ham and dispatch for AID and FIRE and maybe you local police dispatch as they broadcast 154mhz wide and then the cars that respond are digital trunked in some areas not all and even small towns and un incorperated countys are still using those frequencies in FM as they havent upgraded and i know this because even here in phoenix DEA , POLICE , AID , FIRE and a bunch more is all FM within what you should be able to pass threw to the tuner in your phone just like the ISA tuners.. It's not something I have done but I am currently rooting my phone to gain access to the tuner binary and then off to find what should just be a text file that either is the frequency list in binary or hex or something and just research or figure out what to change to pass the commands for higher than 108mhz...

Aviation uses AM. The FM capture effect would severely limit the number of stations that can operate within range of each other. And when you're flying at 40,000 ft, line of sight for your radio signal is pretty far away. That, and AM is more resistant to RFI and has other benefits as well. The FM circuit is acting like a crystal radio for the AM signal (it's Harmful interference to the receiver, but since there is no FM signal to pick up it's what you hear).

Also, the FM receiver is part of the cell radio, and not a stand alone component like an ISA tuning card. The drivers are going to be integral with the rest of the radio drivers, so you won't find a text file containing the frequency list.

AM is Amplitude Modulation.. aviation Frequencies are FM, which is short for Frequency modulation. Mhz is Mega Hertz, a measurement of how Frequent the wave passes through each faze. Modulation is another word for change, so as you Modulate the Frequencies you are changing them, as in changing the station, channel or Frequency. Aviation frequencies are the same as regular radio stations, just starting around 120.00 Mhz and going up, they use VHF and military mostly uses UHF for very high frequency and ultra high frequency... all still Frequency Modulation, or FM.

Slimeball, you are on the right path, NStallion, your close but not quite... you did list correct numbers(frequencies), and even correct measurements (MHz) but they are infact FM. Amplitude is size, so they change the size of the wave. FM is frequency, used in Aviation.. and most everything else since after about 1970
