Hi all,

Got a samsung galaxy tab 10 for christmas. Its great and i've had no problems except for when i tried to set the lock screen up. I went to Location and Security in the settings menu. It allows me to set a pattern or pin but when i try changing Off or 'Require pin/pattern' it just takes me back to 'Location and Security' without giving me the option to change anything. Am i missing something i need to do or is it a bug?

No it isn't a bug. Where it says configure lock screen, that just tells you the status of your lock screen, don't click that, it'll just take you back to previous screen. What you do is choose from configure pattern, pin or password, and set it up that way. You just need to set up one. Hope this answers your question.

Hi,

I am having the same problem. I know how to set the lock screen (and change the way I configure the lock screen) but no matter what I do the lock screen will not appear when I turn the screen off & on again - even if I let it turn off automatically.

It is definitely a bug. I have read a couple of threads but not found a solution so far. Any help is much appreciated!

its not a bug it works beleive me.
do this:

  • From the home screen, go to "Menu > Settings > Location and Security > Set screen lock"
  • Select one of the options, for example PIN:
    • If you choose PIN, enter a numeric PIN when prompted (this will be your password) and press "Continue"
    • Confirm your PIN, then click "OK"
    • now go back or click power button once.
    • screen will go blank
    • click power button again and it will ask you for password or your selected pattern or pin
  • hope it will work for you all this way.

Believe me I have tried this - this is the way you would set a lock screen on any android device...

It is a fault with the Galaxy Tab that some users experience.

I don't have that issue, and several people I know with the Tab 10.1 also don't have the issue.
What exact model do you have, GT-P7500, P7510, P7100?
Which radio variation, WiFi only, 3G, or LTE?
And what version of Android are you running, 3.0/3.1/3.2?
And the country where you bought it?

My Tab is the U.S. P7510-32GB-Wifi version (Android 3.1) and I have this issue.

It is impossible to lock the screen.

Even though you set one of the screen lock methods (dots, pin, password) you can never get that method to work.

You end up in an infinite loop where the security screens just go back and forth and no setting is applied.

Had the same problem. They don't tell you that after selecting one of the lock methods you need to turn the tablet off immediately. When you power back on it works.
I can turn the lock on/off at will (pattern, pin, or password doesn't matter) and it works instantly - no need to power off the device. As soon as I set it, the new lock is active as soon as the Tab goes to sleep and the screen turns off, then I hit the power button to wake the screen and unlock the device. As far as I know, it's always been like this.

I have the 3G P7500 model if that makes any difference.

Hi All, I have the P7510 Wifi version. I'm in the UK and I have updated to 3.2. The problem is still present though, I cannot set a lock screen no matter how many times I try.

Can I just point out to those that are saying they don't have the problem - that is NOT helping us that do!!!!

Nice to know that some others have the problem. If anyone finds a solution then I would really appreciate it if you could post it!

Thanks

Folks, If you follow krishankhanna's directions EXACTLY as written (see above) it will work. I had the same problems and I followed the directions step by step and it worked. Thank you Krishankhanna!

Cardenas96 - all due respect but the instructions krishankhanna gave were just the generic instructions of how to set a lock screen on any android device.

Everyone who has the problem highlighted in this thread will have (or at least should have) tried to set up a lock screen using this technique....The problem is when you try setting a lockscreen and then when you press the power button once (turn screen off) and press it again (to turn the screen back on) no lock screen appears. Despite the fact that I have tried to set up a pattern, a pin AND a password.

None of them work on my Tab. Can people please confirm if they have tried the krishankhanna technique (the normal way of setting lock screen) and it is not working for them. Or am I just going mad???

Indeed. Three explanations come to mind.

  1. The British government simply does not allow its citizens to lock their tablets. Since you guys have no written constitution, you are arguably less protected from government intrusion. :D;):D;)
  2. The behavior shown in the video is the exact same behavior my tablet exhibits when the No Lock widget is active and set to Unlocked. In other words, an application could still have overridden the lock setting.
  3. Did you flash a custom ROM? Your UI does look different than mine (and my Tab also runs the latest 3.2.) E.g., your back arrow has a hook, while mine is straight. If you have not rooted, perhaps your carrier customized the UI and screwed this up in the process.
