Root Take 7.014.1 Update before rooting ?

I've got a new A500 and I intend to root it soon, but I would like advice on whether to take the current update 7.014.1 being pushed before I go through the rooting process?

Yes, I did. It is now rooted running stock 3.2.

The procedure posted by TimmyDean works easily, but he needs to recompose the instructions to include more than just the changes he incorporated into version 3. It was simple, but the instructions for example no longer say to install the PC driver for the Acer, which is the first step. Also, were I writing them, I would mention that there are a lot of folders in the zip package that are solely for the use of the scripts therein, and not something which needs the attention of the person doing the rooting. That threw me for awhile. I saw all that and was expecting to be running ADB manually, etc. None if that is required. It's as close to a one click root process as you can get.

Those comfortable with mucking around inside Android would already know things like needing to install the PC drivers first. But I prefer newbie-type instructions. I'd much rather have to read past things I already know than to miss something important because I didn't think of it.

I do understand what you mean.
Ive had this tablet from the first day it was released and I think I read on the XDA site for close to a month on rooting and flashing Roms.I wanted to make sure I did it right. I found so many instructions that I didn't understand and I was totally lost.
And sometimes I still am. But I do know a lot more how it works after flashing my tablet and phone about 100 times. Did you stick with a stock ROM?

Have you checked out this site.Thor moved from XDA to this site a while ago and has made some awesome Roms.The 14.2 is rock solid and a very nice ROM.Lots of added stuff to make the tablet more useful.

Yea, the ROM that TimmyDean's V3 procedure uses is stock 3.2. I think I did see some reference to Thor in the process. It might have been once I installed Acer Recovery Installer and then ClockworkMod Recovery. I think he had a logo in Recovery while I was setting up to make a Android backup.

I'll check out your link there, but my current plan is to run stock 3.2 until ICS ports start coming on the scene ( unless something really cool surfaces before that). So far I am pretty happy with the stock ROM. I only wanted root so I could run things like Root Explorer, Titanium Backup, and of course work with nandroids. Too bad Acer didn't follow HTC's lead and leave its bootloaders unlocked. Seems like the current trend is to emulate Apple's choke hold on customers.

I dont remember reading that. I usually read all the manuals. Must have missed that.

. is kept at least 30 centimeters (one foot) away from a mobile phone."

This sounds really hard to believe, that having a mobile phone within a foot of the tablet would be harmful. Heck, they make a version of the A500 that has 3G! I can't figure what they must think could happen, and I can only find ONE similar mentioning of this on an old Apple forum post from 2008, where the guy said a store rep told him to keep his cell phone away from his Macbook. Other than that, I went 6 pages into a Google search and found no explanation at all.

Before reading that today, I had been placing them beside each other to charge on my desk, and even sat my phone on top of the tablet's closed case to carry them once. I haven't seen any issues so far.

On the Android phones I have used, when viewing several concurrent notifications by pulling down the notification bar, there is a button to 'clear' them all if desired. I'd like to do that on this tablet, but I don't see a 'clear' button there. Is there some way to clear multiple notifications?

I got a reply just now from Acer tech support to my query on this issue. here is what they sent:

" Thank you for contacting Acer America. My name is Remya, badge number GWSI1105. I will be happy to assist you.

I understand that your concern. Let me see what best I can do for you.

As per our records, your product is covered under standard limited warranty.

The mobile phones are likely to interfer with the speaker and which will cause static noise from the speaker. That is the reason that we suggest you kept the tablet at least 30 centimetres (one foot) away from a mobile phone."

They should mention in the manual that this recommendation is for when the speakers are actually in use. It reads as if the phone should never, ever be close to the tablet, even when neither is in use.

The quickest way I've found is to click on the clock on the bottom right and the notifications are stacked above that. I just keep hitting x on the very bottom one and that rids them fairly quickly.

That's what I had to do. I'm finding that the lack, on this tablet, of some menu items we take for granted in Android phones is a bit disheartening. Especially since Honeycomb is supposed to be a more recent (presumably more advanced) OS version.

Yea, it bugs me sometimes that manufacturers will put stuff like that in a user guide, and never explain WHY they say such things. Their efforts could be better spent learning how to write better user guides, for sure!

Most user guides I have seen are woefully inadequate. But anyone who has ever asked their cell carrier, or phone manufacturer, to explain something that is little more than cryptic in the user guide has encountered the same responses I got. The vendors have no idea what it means either. I was told "sorry, sir, but we have the same guide you do" buy Audiovox, Motorola, Samsung, and Verizon on times when I wanted to know how some poorly described feature actually worked on a cell phone. They had no better understanding of it than I did. In the end I would either have to figure it out the hard way, or just never use the supposed feature.
