Help How To Hard Reset?

Hi all. I'm new to the forums but I'm having trouble with my Orange San Francisco 2 (ZTE Crescent / Blade2).

My problem is that I'm stuck on the "Too Many Pattern Attempts!" screen.

I've tried most solutions and I can't figure out how to do this, so if anyone could tell me how to hard reset my phone, that'd be great. I've already tried booting it into FTM mode but I can't do anything there.

Some workarounds to try before that:
1. try entering null as password. (together with your google username) 2. try entering your username without @gmail.com
3. Combine 1 and 2
4. Call yourself from another phone, answer, without hanging up press the home button, then menu button, settings, try to disable pattern-lock
5. Call yourself from another phone, answer, hang-up, directly after hanging up start pressing your buttons like a madman for <30-60 seconds ending with your home button (might take a while to get the timing right). Go into settings and disable pattern-lock.
6. Try the normal recover password routine from GMail.com and start over from 1.

IT DOES NOT USE the current gmail password.
IT WANTS the ORIGINAL gmail password -- i.e. the one that you used when you went through the initial phone setup procedure.

If ADB is enabled on the phone, then you don't need to reset.
Connect USB to your computer, "adb shell",
cd /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases
sqlite3 settings.db
update system set value=0 where name='lock_pattern_autolock';
update system set value=0 where name='lockscreen.lockedoutpermanently';
.quit

You could also re-flash the rom if you want to try in the Crescent area over on Modaco

One time mine asked for my username and password. But earlier in the day Google told me much of the UK was on gmail instead of googlemail and did I want to change it. I selected yes and then later in the day (totally unconnected with the session where they asked me did I want to change to gmail) I got to this wanting the user name and password, think it was after switching ROMS. No matter which I tried it failed, be it blink@gmail.com or blink@googlemail.com so I`m thinking its the password thats the problem by then. Anyway, I managed to find out it was none of the user names they wanted as above. It was the original user name (email addy) I used to sign up for the gmail (read googlemail) account. So flipflop@floppetyflop.co.uk or something not to dissimilar. Hope that isn`t someones real addy. Bingo, I was in!

When you go to your Google Account its that user name there they seem to want. Don`t know if its the same in your situation but that`s how I found it. Only Google could make life this complicated, second only to Microdaft.

I don't know too much about android so sorry if this is a stupid question. Does flashing the ROM void any warranty or involve rooting?

Yes it does..... I did mine a few times and only got it 23rd of December. Its working perfectly for me.

As Frodo suggests you may be better going to the Crescent section in the Modoco Forum. You`ll be able to join the Darkside and hopefully sort it then

You basically need to install the Clockwork Mod so that you can get into the CWM Restore screen. In there you use the up/down Volume buttons to move through the selections and the last selection is Advanced, that moves you to the second page with the HOME key being used to select. The back key takes you back to the first page. Wipe Data/Factory Reset and other options are in there. If installing a new ROM it needs to be on the SD card ready. If its the Crescent.zip (use for Vivacity or SFII) then you need the Vivacitykernel.zip (use it to make sure all keys are aligned, for SFII users theirs also a SFIIkernel.zip file) on the SD card too. You need to Flash both one after each other before choosing the option to restart the system (phone restart). This takes up to about 10 mins to restart the phone as all the changes are applied. Its advisable, if you proceed, to wipe the Cache and the Dalvik Cache as well as the Data/Factory Reset. Then you have a better chance of a fresh start.

This does not unlock the phone, that`s a separate routine and needs to be done before applying this ROM change, if that`s what you intend to do. Basically it`s apply the drivers with the USB lead disconnected, install QPST on the PC, turn on USB Debugging on the phone, press and hold the VOL down button on the phone and start it-release the button when you see FTM on the screen. Reconnect the USB lead then open the correct USB Port in QPST Configuration. Once done and showing the phone is connected close QPST and open Software Download. Save a QCN Backup file, unzip the correct unlock folder (Vivacity or SFII) and run download. Press START then sit and wait. Restore the QCN Backup. Remove the battery and USB Cable then insert your Sim card of choice, sorted! Full instructions are there, this is the condensed version to give you an idea.

I've been searching their forums (as well as google) to try and find out how I can root my phone. Could anyone shed some light on this as I'm stumped.

If you decide to proceed then do it logically. Read and read some more of that post on page 1. If you decide to proceed then get the correct files together and use them in the order they are described. Check and double check you have all the files and the correct ones for your model before you start. Take your time and think about what you`re doing, ensure the phone is 100% charged before you start. Then you will have a better chance of success.

I unlocked my SFII and then rebooted it from the Restore menu (see link to post above for definition of Restore). In hindsight, I should have unlocked it, restarted to the Restore screen, wiped the data/factory, Cache and Dalvik Cache (Dalvik is on second page of Restore so use Advanced to get to it). Then applied the Crescent.zip as a flash from Restore, followed by the Sanfranciscokernel.zip (align the keyboard with that) then rebooted the system. Both zips are flashed by moving the up/down vol button to move through the menu then press HOME to select the apply zip from SD option Ten mins later I would have had an unlocked and debranded phone. But I hadn`t the confidence to take that last step and didn`t have those two files on my SD card. Now I have done it many times but because I simply restarted the phone I initially had great problems trying to get back to the Restore screen to apply the ROM change.

By the looks of it, it seems you can only do it if you have USB Debugging or ADB turned on. Which I don't.
Could you tell me how to factory reset, please? I think it would be easier.

You still need a ROM after the factory reset I think, so that page is better to work from. Their is a new file in that site and Crescent section that has the Restore built into the phone permanently so you don`t need the ADB. You need to get into Restore to use the factory reset. Debugging is simple to turn on. Open the phone settings, open appllications, open development and set USB Debugging turned on.

Resetting still won't get rid of the pattern lock - if anyone knew how do do it anyway! Read all the stories linked to see. A Facory Reset is only available from the phone menu option. The only way without replacing the rom are the manual methods... hit the menu button a thousand times as the phone boots up etc..

You don't need to get into the phone to root it. Step one = hold down vol + and power on WITHOUT the USB lead connected and your phone will display "FTM". Then you connect USB, run the QPST app on your PC > backup the phone > write the unlock file to the phone > boot into Clockwork and install the 2 zips. Done!

Easy huh?

I had a good scout around, reading through many sites and pages. The ZTE phones appear to have various ways of hard setting the factory reset without the menu. Some are a little white button behind the battery, others are a key combination like Vol UP and Power. I tried some but got nowhere, I do however believe one exists, but do not know what it is.

I suggest therefore that you approach Google, since it is a problem at their end. I doubt you will get anywhere fast with that approach. The other way is to either contact Orange or whoever you purchased from and get it repaired. ZTE is another option and this has reportedly been done by one person but not verified. Final option is one of those shops or market stalls we all know and love that reset/unlock phones. Tell them the problem first, ask them if they can reset or fix it, ask how much before you let them do it.

Once you get it repaired/swapped I personally would say sod the guarantee and get it patched so the Restore is always on. Had that been there now it would have saved you. I dare say even now someone could Telnet/FTP in or something and make the changes. But its finding that person. I fear, especially as its a new released phone recently, your quickest route is to get it repaired/swapped. Good luck and let us know how you get on,

EDIT: Theirs no harm in trying Frodos approach in the post above but I doubt it will work. Since as you say you cannot get in to turn on USB debugging. Maybe you`ll get lucky and its on, give it a try anyway.

It involves rooting only if you want it to. You can install an untouched setup to make your phone like new - a factory reset if you will*. Only thing you need is the mac address of your phone wifi. If you've already connected it to the web perhaps you have that information on your home router?? The backup procedure in the tutorial is the essential step to get this info from the phone first. (all possible without having to turn on your phone or unlock it).

*If your phone gets sent back to the factory that's all they will do.

Don't worry if you can't get it. You can always randomly generate another. Mac addresses are supposed to be unique but you'd have a better chance of winning the lottery jackpot twice in a row than finding a mac conflict with another phone.

Strictly rooting voids the warrany I think, but most people get replacement phones anyway. Some people will flash the phone with a stock rom so that the supplier can't tell.

Why does he need USB debugging turned on?? FTM mode doesn't require the phone to boot.

The only reason that is turned on is to move files around with the phone running. You can put the phone in USB mode from clockwork... the O/S isn't needed.

In Bouncers post he says;

Download THIS file and install it.
Download the unlock.zip for your SFII or Vivacity. (WARNING: Using the WRONG unlock.zip will brick your phone completely)
Connect your phone to your computer and make sure you have USB Debugging turned on. (Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging)
Press and hold the Volume Down and power buttons together. This SHOULD bring you to a screen saying FTM. If your see Clockwork Mod you will have to load the stock ROM. (Instructions to Follow)
Make sure you installed QPST in the first step. Now in the Start menu find "QPST Configuration" Click on "Ports" and then the "Add Port" button.
Once that is added close Configuration and open "Software Download" from the start menu
Click "Backup" on the utility and choose where to save the "QCN" File
Make sure the file exists and is non-zero in file size before precedding - If not try the from step 6 again.
Unzip your Unlock.zip folder and run "download.exe"
If you are sure you want to Unlock your phone press "START!"
Sit and wait it out, Should take no more than two minutes until it is finished and Unlocked!
Go back to the "Software Download" utility and click the "Restore" Find the .qcn file you saved and restore it.
If it will not restore tick "Allow Phone/FILE ESN mismatch"
Remove your USB cable, pull the battery and insert your SIM of choice. Voila.
Your phone SHOULD boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery. If not follow the instuctions below.
If your phone is in Clockwork Mod follow instruction set 3.

I didn`t realise FTM worked without it. If it does then great, looking at that list it made it sound like not.

I need to know before I swap ROMS again since the one I`m on doesn`t show as the Crescent. I`m pretty sure it said it was compatible before I changed ROMS. Its only on offer for 24 hours too. Mine now shows as an 02 ZTE Blade 2 where before it was the Crescent.

I don't see any reason that debugging needs to be on. It's a setting in the O/S that won't be running when you do the flashing. Shall have to confirm with bouncer5... Or perhaps Plymboy can confirm?

All he has to do is try it, surprised he hasn`t yet. Unless he has and not said anything specific about it. Right, this is the second day I had a virtual plane on the ground waiting to go. Best set it back to morning again. Then fly from Liverpool across the Mersey and the Dee to Snowdon, through the valleys to Caernarfon.
