Verzion Nexus Car Dock

I must say, I am disappointed in the way all this is going myself. With the Motorola A855, sure it was like a belt clip on a suction cup, but it still works fine and there were no pretensions about it being a charging dock. The usb port is on the side that faces down and that works just fine for me. And anyone who doesn't charge the phone while in the car must have a battery the size of a boulder, because using Nav, or much of anything else is going to drain the battery hard. And if you're not, then why even bother putting it into a car dock?

But the VZW version does look like it would be too snug, you would have to feed the cord through the end to plug it into the bottom of the phone, and buttons would be getting mauled.

The alternatives look good, but WOW the prices do not. For a $300 phone, the car dock accessory should be made to fit much better than this. The $199 Droid one was and is a perfect fit and well made. I think the only time it failed is when I was going down some REALLY rough roads. I mean, I drive a Jeep, hehehe

from fommy.com, regarding my 12/16 GSM car dock purchase that they were "expecting" to ship 12/23:

Hi,

We are expecting this item in stock on 01/23 as currently this is back ordered from manufacturer. I apologize for inconvenience and delay.

Did they email you or did you request an update? I haven't heard anything about my order....

I just want my dock! Can nothing related to this phone happen on time?

Requested an update, they didn't get back to me immediately, I rerequested the update with the original request's ticket number, they shot me back that info via email. Tis a bummer

Awesome...more good news.

Thanks for the heads up. So I guess now it's a waiting game to see who'll actually have the GSM version available first, then we get to find out if the phone will fit.

Amazon.co.uk has it in stock on 01/06 but it will cost $110 shipped to the USA. I also called bell.ca to see if they will ship to the USA but it was a no go. If anyone lives near the boarder of Canada and is willing to drive up to a bell store, they have it in stock for sure. I been trying to get this dock and an OEM google back cover. I don't trust those ebay sellers from hong kong/china and it's sad to say because I am chinese.

if i want a car dock, i'd get the one without charging ability. charging inside car is really bad for battery life.
car battery's voltage is unstable, voltage goes up and down too widely compare to home electricity, and restarting engine causes big surge, that mess up not only battery but device as well.
i do carry car charger in my car, but i'll only use it in case of emergency.

I rarely post, but this has to be addressed because it is 100% incorrect. Car 12v systems are well regulated and these phones charge off of 5v. The car chargers themselves step the incoming voltage (around 14v) to 5v. Additionally, the phones themselves have regulators as well and will stop charging if the voltage is too high or low. You will not wear out your battery any faster by charging it in a car instead of from a wall socket.

For anyone who bought this from fommy.com, it does not have the 3 pin connector. I had confirmed it with a rep from and cancelled the order after reading this post #55 from : Official Galaxy Nexus Car Dock with TRUE 3-pin functionality! - Page 6 - xda-developers

Hmm this is strange. I emailed fommy.com about this myself and here's the reply I got:
Hello, according to the information which was provided to us by Samsung, this item is as described on our website. You are able to dock your device into the mount, and connect a charger or audio cable through the base of the dock. Thanks

I guess I'll leave my order as is, unless I can find it available somewhere else sooner.

FYI folks...

The part number listed below is for the 3-pin dock (unless I'm mistaken). Is this Samsung's confirmation that the GSM dock will fit our LTE Nexus, or just an error? hmmmm...

To satisfy various customers’ requests, Samsung mobile devices are localized from country to country. As a result, the mobile device specifications change from country to country (even though they may have same marketing name).

In the case of the Verizon Wireless Galaxy™ Nexus™ (SCH-i515), its thickness differs from the Galaxy Nexus sold in other countries. This means that the Verizon Wireless Galaxy Nexus (SCH-i515) is not compatible with the Landscape Dock or other accessories sold in other countries.

The docking accessories supported for your Verizon Wireless Galaxy Nexus (SCH-i515) are:

Vehicle Dock – Part # ECS-K1F2BEGSTD
Desktop HDMI Dock – Part # EDD-H1F2BEBSTD
Desktop STD Dock – Part # EDD-D1F2BEBSTD
Note: Forcing your Verizon Wireless Galaxy Nexus (SCH-i515) into a dock sold in another country can potentially damage the mobile device and/or accessory, voiding its warranty.

I read it meaning it will not work:

In what way is it a tight fit? It occurs to me that maybe the Verizon dock is so tight because it already has the same dimensions as the GSM dock made for a thinner phone, and the only difference is literally the lack of a 3-pin connector. Probably not the case, but it would be kind of funny if it was.

Im almost 100% sure this is the case- they just cheaped out on integrating the three pin connector bc they figured they could strip out 90% of the cost and still charge the same.

Fun fact: at VZW headquarters they charge their employees for coffee. When I went there in '06 for a meeting the business people were scrambling around to the secretaries for change to buy us a cup of coffee. It was pathetic.

I think he was pointing out that the dock they listed as being compatible with the LTE GN, was the same part number as for the GSM version.

Any updates from people who ordered? Still waiting?

Fommy.com has the expected ship date of 1/23 posted...who knows when it'll actually ship though.

OK, so it's a given that the VZW car dock will not have the three pin compatibility.

However, I just want to know if anyone has the VZW dock and how well it fits. And does the phone 'see' that it's in a vehicle dock so that since ICS doesn't use the old 'Car Home' it would still function in a similar fashion so that my Settings Profile app would still 'trigger' that it is in fact in a car dock?

TIA

I wouldn't think it would... but buy some nfc tags and nfc task launcher! I have a tag in my (generic, universal) car dock that opens vlingo car, nav, music, changes volume and all that. You should be able to have it trigger your profile as well. Very handy.

It fits OK. Maybe a little tighter than I would like. It just a case stuck to your windshield. It doesn't trigger Car Mode. I got it to "work" for me by using tasker to put it in Car Mode when connected to my car's blue tooth.
