Help HTC Sensation - Wifi Problem

Well i have an answer from HTC.

Bit of a stock one most of it, but before the usual "if this doesn't work return it for a repair..." phrase, they actually admit there is a problem and are looking into it.

Exact words are:
"We understand that there are currently issues with Wi-Fi connectivity..." then later..
"..please make sure that autoupdates are enabled to receive a fix once release.."

It goes on but basically I've possibly added this to the pot. We'll have to wait and see.
Usually it's covered by "updates to improve stability" etc.

Cheers all..:D

An update....

My issue still hasn't gone away...so when HTC asked for feedback, I gave them an honest score and low and behold I had a call from HtC customer service today...

The BT Openzone wi-fi issue has been tracked particularly to Vodafone's My Account application using a default "Use BT-Openzone" options, so anyone out there experiencing the same issue, please either untick this option (if you don't have a BT-Openzone bolt on) or uninstall the app if you wish....

Well done HTC...not so well done Vodafone..!

This fixed my issue with the autoconnections however the "forget" function of the native app still causes issues with BT-FON connections. HTC have recognised this and will let me know when the fixes are available...

Cheers all...

I think the problem is that the software that decides to connect to wifi or via cell tower is confused. I have problems and if I change the setting to allow only wifi, the problem seems to be solved. I had difficulty finding the setting for this feature since you have to navigate to the wifi calling app, then hit the menu button below the screen. Select settings, connection preferences and select wifi. To get this menu, wifi calling must be enabled though. post if this fixes your problem.

HTC Sense has widgets to switch on and off mobile data and wifi (amongst many other things). Just put them on one of your homescreens.

The issue with this not connecting got me worried a little as well.
I had a MAC filter on my networks and it seemed that that was my biggest problem.

I do not know why but in stead of the MAC address I had initially on my phone, it got changed to something completely different. It would seem as if you need to go into the advanced settings to get rid of some irritating bogus MAC setting.

That is my guess.

All in all, once I got the right MAC address sorted, it worked smoothly.
Pffffff. ;-)

Care to be more specific?
As you can see there are several aspects and it's not like every phone is suffering from the same thing.
WiFi is functional on the Sensation - but some combinations of users and/or phones and/or routers may have more unique problems.
Everything as topic starter said - endless loop:
Scanning
Authenticating
Disconnected

At the same time, my iPhone, HTC Desire and laptop can connect to the router without any problems.

And yet I have no problem at all with my Desire, Sensation, a laptop and a couple of other WiFi-related bits of kit.

That leaves the router as a variable (I'm assuming everyone's on the same Android release?) for those having problems and so far, that aspect has not been approached.

At least two posts reference this problem with public access points and that's something I have seen: with Android, Apple and a laptop when trying to use some of the free BT access points - because despite being "free" a password is required and without that, you just get an endless loop as described.

When my Sensation was upgraded to 2.3.4 the Orange app (plus password) was installed with it, allowing me to use BT Openzone systems.
Before that, when attempting to use BT Openzone, I also got the 3-step loop as described - and now I don't.

What say you Sensation owners?
This one thinks he'd rather see a sticky listing solutions, instead of a sticky listing uncorrelated/unrelated "causes". ;)

I've not checked other forums, but I do wonder how prevalent is this problem - I mean actually and demonstrably existing on a number of devices under the same conditions?
As it reads in this thread, WiFi is practically non-functional for the Sensation - yet (for example) one solution of having to change channels before obtaining a reliable connection isn't even a problem with WiFi generally and still less a problem with the Sensation, because that's what you'd need to do in a crowded WiFi environment - period.

Is this still a common problem? I see this thread has 11,000 views and am thinking if it really is a big issue that this thread may need to be a sticky...

What say you Sensation owners?

I am sure this is annoying for those that suffer from it, but if it is "common" then I am sure that there would be a lot more posts in this thread (as opposed to views) in the 6+ months it has been running. After all with common problems the thread often extends to more than one page, which for this forum is unusual, because of the large number of posts per page when compared with others.

I have never had any problem. My Sensation successfully logs on to all sorts of wifi in hotels and offices whilst I am away and enables me to download and send emails as well as browsing the net.

I think in reality it was much more of a problem with my old Hero, which was much more fussy about what router it would work with, although again I was lucky enough not to have many problems like that with it.

You may have already tried this but go to settings>wireless and networks>wi-fi settings>menu>advanced>wi-fi sleep policy

Set the sleep policy to 'never' and then press menu>save
Thanks, this solved my problem! I can connect now.

By the way this is my first post to here, as the HTC Sensation is my first android. There is a learning curve to use and set up these devices.

I have had a sensation 4g for awhile. The wifi works perfectly at home when connected to my router no problems at all.

At work, Tmobile does not work, so I bought an AT&T hotspot because we have AT&T cells in the building and they are the only company with a strong signal.

Everytime I am connected to the AT&T hotspot, my service works and then stops, works again stops again, it is very frustrating. It has been going on for some time. It seems that whenever it does not have a connection with tmobile, we get spot service in certain areas, the wifi will not work. Whenever the bars are blank and an X appears no service. Once one bar appears all my messages will appear and go through it is really weird. I try turning off mobile network completely and just use wifi but that does not work either.

I have tried everything. I updated my phone to the newest HTC update, I have done the fxrwifi on the marketplace, everything works for about 10 minutes and stops. I turned off the sleep policy as well and turned on best wifi performance but nothing seems to work at all.

Is there a problem when it tries to connect to a different companies hotspot? I mean it recognizes it it will be connected sometimes for hours at a time without a problem but mostly it keeps disconnecting me and I have no service again. It is just weird because the wifi works amazingly at home with no problems at all.

If anyone has any suggestions please help I am lost what to try next.

Only thing that worked for me is to use a static IP

Not sure I can help, but it could be that AT&T have set up their hotpots so that they cannot be used for downloads to phones provided by competitors. If you get a download only when you have a TMob cell connection, then that download may be coming from that cell connection rather than the AT&T hotspot. After all the original idea behind these hot spots is that they were to be used by computers which did not have cell phone capability rather than cell phones that did.

The irony is that when you do get a good cell data connection the Sensation can work very well as a wifi spot itself. That is if your carrier allows tethering, which I know some US carriers do not.

I'm not having quite the same problem as everyone else. My sensation can pick up and connect to my router no problem, but when I try to go to android market or onto internet, it can't connect and I get a "network failure" message. I contacted HTC, they suggested it was my router that was not allowing any more connections to it. I checked my router and it doesn't have a limit on connections. HTC told me to try a different router somewhere else. I won't be able to test that theory till tomorrow, but thought that was a rubbish suggestion.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Sensation is on T Mobile. I have a Desire on O2 which has no such problem.

Hmm well, maybe not so rubbishy - I get that message occasionally using the market app too - and that's when not even using WiFi. The Orange 3G service is umm, "a bit choppy at times".

Your router will have a limit on connections although it may not be that obvious or well published but in any event, that as a possible cause of a problem is easily tested: have nothing else active on your LAN when you're trying to use WiFi with your phone.
Personally, I've seen no such problem with my Sensation using my WiFi.
