If you recognize "Urso" as Latin for "bear", you are correct. A whole long time ago, Eskimos - who ate a very high-fat diet of whale blubber and seal - had massive gall bladder problems. Eskimo medicine men determined that (I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP) polar bear urine would help. Exactly HOW they determined that is beyond my capacity to speculate... as is the ability to determine how they safely collected the stuff fresh and in quantity.
Modern science did, in fact, prove that there are compounds in polar bear urine that cause the gall bladder to work better. Scientists were able to synthesize those compounds and put them in a capsule... hence the name Ursodiol.
Anyway, after taking it for a year we ran another hida scan and found out that my gall bladder was cranking out bile at a 65% rate, vs. a 35% rate. Yayyy polar bears!
I guess it's one occasion when it's a really good idea to eat the yellow snow
