Help 1.5 is likely Samsung's problem, not Sprint's

I have seen the ads for the Behold II, so I looked into it (just out of curiosity, not to switch). It was released last week and is running on 1.5 as well.

The owners of that phone probably won't have to wait as long for 2.1 as we have, but I still think its ridiculous that with two major revisions released since 1.5, Samsung still put out a new phone running on the old version. I'll probably not buy another Samsung phone after learning this and considering the other issues we've all had with the Moment.

People are always screaming that the newest software isn't on their devices. I had the Verizon Touch Pro 2, shipped with WinMo 6.1 but VZW updated it so it's running the new 'WinMo 6.5 release" (which hasn't even hit Sprint yet!) and it is a serious performance killer. Sure, the new Touch Flo is awesome, but the device lags, half the software has issues and overall, it was a downgrade. The Omnia 2 (a Samsung device) shipped with 6.5 on VZW and lags horribly! It should run circles around the TP2, but it just doesn't.

Sure, we can blame Sprint for not updating or we can blame Samsung on this one. But the bottom line is Samsung releases devices based on what they know works. The want to update to the newest and greatest is so fun, but honestly, how many releases have their been since 1.5 - 5/2009 (I believe 2: 1.6 - 9/2009, 2.0 - 10/2009 and 2.1 - 1/2010) and we are getting the newest one as soon as Sprint can add the bloatware and test it out - I think I have heard a possible April date? Three months after release to update this many devices seems pretty simple.

As far as running old versions? 1.5 is 6 months old. You want to retest your release hardware (which AT&T has been testing for 8-12 weeks) to reload a new OS when you are ready to go to market? Nope, that's why we have MR's. To update the device after proper testing is completed.'

Sorry for the Rant, but after living through the "When is BBOS 5 coming to my Storm to make it able to call someone" for a year, it seems downright silly to me to say that a Manufacturer is behind the curve by launching a software that became 'old' a month ago.

Android 1.6 and 2.0 work just as well as 1.5; better, even. There's nothing special about 1.5 except that its old and Samsung has a hard-on for it.

1.5 doesn't even work on CDMA, but that didn't stop them from putting it on our Moments, albeit with a band-aid fix. So that theory is no good.

Finally, Android was meant to be open. It doesn't work like most old-school phone OS's. But the providers are all treating it that way, and that's why people are screaming about the newest software not being on our phones. The only limitation is the providers/manufacturers.

No, I get it, but the thing is its not about open platforms or anything else. If that was the case, you just go to SDK and root the phone and flash it. Pretty simple.

The fact of the matter is though, we are never happy with 'old' hardware or software.

Everyone that got a Moment is now bitching that the Supersonic is coming... The people that got a Touch Pro 2 are bitching that the HD2 is coming to the US... The people that got an Iphone 3g are pissed that the 3Gs just came out... It never ends.

Sure the Moment has some major "issues" to clear up, but from everything I've heard, the Hero does, the TP2 on Sprint does, the BB Tour does... There's not a good smartphone choice on Sprint. That's why I am paying 1/2 of what I did on Verizon - and I haven't even pulled the plug on VZW yet.

These threads are always about the same thing. We get pissed because there's a better something than what we bought last week. I think compared to my experience with the BlackBerry Storm, the Moment blows it out of the water - even without the CL14 update.

I guess for me, forums like this are more for getting educated than ranting. I'd rather hear why 1.5 is worse than 1.6 and why 2.1 will fix everything for us. Not to change the subject, but it's interesting that 1.5 doesn't run CDMA, I hadn't heard that before - yes, I'm new to Droid (lots of BB and WinMo experience)... Any particular reason it doesn't work and how did they plug it?

Awesome statement! Welcome to technology everybody; this is one field that you can't possibly stay ahead of the game in. It's not just Samsung, it's all manufacturers and all OS's. Samsung could probably push out 1.6 tomorrow but then everyone would complain that it's "not the latest version." So they take a few months to test and make sure it works...and then they test it a bit more with Sprint's built in apps...and then they test a bit more to make sure it still works...and then it goes to the field. I trust the manufacturer of the best LCD TV in the world probably has a good handle on a cellphone development cycle; and I'm happy to wait a few months to make sure the product works the way it is designed to do so...and then we can root it again to take it to a level Sprint doesn't want us too .

When did this phone come out? Less than three months ago? I've read it has a GPS problem but I've never witnessed it. I know it has a battery meter problem but I fixed that, but then I'm sort of a gear head and like to tinker. I don't have any problem with 1.5 but this is my first Android phone. It sure beats the hell out of WinMo and Blackberry and I've had both, for several years. Not too many brand new phones come with brand new versions of operating systems but when they do they often experience the same problems people here are seeing. I hear the N1 has lots of problems. It amazes me that people are complaining so loudly about the OS version.

I was and am pissed about the way cl14 was handled but "only" having 1.5 isn't an issue at all. This phone was released before 2.0 was available AND 2.0 was released on the Droid exclusively. No CDMA phone was ever released with 1.6 period. Frankly, 1.5 was the only Android OS choice when this phone was developed. Right now, the Nexus is the only phone with 2.1 and it will probably be a month or more before there's another 2.1 phone available. When it comes to OS, we're not far behind at all, though it may seem that way. You can certainly have issue with the gps, airplane mode and so so BT implementaion issues as well as how little tweaking Samsung did to the OS compared with HTC and Motorola. But EVERY phone released has its share of issues and the Moment is still far more stable than any of my previous WM phones. I was extremely disappointed in the cl13 release, but I'm hopeful that the 2.1 release will be closer to 4/1 than 6/30 and will be a solid effort. I'm reserving the right to start my Samsung hate fest till then.

I must admit I am worried that Samsung may choose to focus too much on their new, presumably-DOA "Bada" OS and give short shrift to Android. We don't need yet another Linux-based phone OS.

From a purely marketing perspective, Samsung would stand to lose a lot of money if they were to walk away from Android...this is serious a cash cow and I'm pretty certain they'll be working with Google for the forseeable future.

i'm not trying to be a douche or anything, but I understand where the thread starter is coming from. I've never owned a samsung phone until I got the moment, but i've previously owned 3 smartphones and never had any of the problens that I've had since I bought the moment.

while I don't know if any of the problems have to do with the 1.5 OS, I do notice that other samsung phone owners seem to be having similar problems with thier phones. personally I feel that this will probably be the last samsung phone that I ever buy, unless they step it up a notch. Also someone said before that they make great tv's so that mean's they can handle phones.... really? what does one have to do with the other? you can make one great product and another craptacular product. Microsoft & sony do it all the time.

I know that as far as name calling goes, yours is sort of mild but I could just as easily call the people threatening to ditch their phones, cry babies. If people don't like the phone so much to the point of switching phones, they'll just end up in a different phone specific forum reading about a different set of phone specific problems. Life's too short. I've got more important things to worry about.

So in essence what you're saying is you don't care if the phone you spent your hard earned money on works properly or not... I don't see how somebody could not care unless they have a lot of extra money lying around because somebody else is paying your cost of living expenses (parents maybe?).

I personally feel that that when I spend my money on things they should work properly. I dunno, i'm funny like that though .
Life is pretty long when you make bad decision's (Like getting stuck with a buggy phone for the duration of a 2 yr contract).

I happen to like the phone, but I think it's more the overall Android experience that I like and not so much the phone itself. If it didn't have so many problems maybe ppl wouldn't complain as much.

Seriously though, Im reading all this all FROM my phone, and kind of laughing. Try upgrading from a Nextel i850, then come cry to me about problems on this phone.

In my eyes, I have a damn good phone, that's becoming fiendishly better as time goes on. We have a dedicated developer forum that's centered in nothing but making this phone better. Im happy with my choice, but then again, Im not a 'right now this instant' type person. I do like things to be within a decent timeframe, but a few more months I think I can wait out.

G1, a lot of people are seeing a lot of FC after the last Sense UI update and some people are seeing a much faster battery drain. Fido users are all complaining that all data usage is on roaming.

Eris, the SMS app won't let the phone sleep. A lot of people complain about the battery. In the Eris forum there's a thread that sounds a lot like this one. Problems sending MMS messages to other carriers. If the screen brightness is set to manual, waking the phone up makes the screen very dim. The alarm clock isn't working for a lot of people. WiFi problems.

And I only spent about five minutes in each forum and I didn't have time to review the MyTouch forum but I'd probably find similar stories. All phones have flaws. Sooner or later people figure out how to fix them or updates come along that fix them. Like I said earlier, this phone has only been out for three months.

One of my co-workers has a G1 and has so many problems after the last update he is looking for a new phone. He said after the last update he has had more problems than when he first got the phone.

(This is also proof that updates don't always make things better)

There are apps that run fine on my Moment but FC on his G1.

What G1 that isn't rooted has sense ui? that doesn't come with the phone or any official update... you're either making stuff up to prove your point or talking about ppl with custom roms. in which case any bugs that their phone encounters is of no fault of the phone itself, but the owner and the crappy rom

i'll give you the stuff about the Eris.

but to end all this back and forth. The G1 and Moto Droid are the least buggy android phones around... also not the point of the thread starter. I beleive his point was more about the samsung moment, which happens to be (debatably) the buggiest android phone around. Number two just from reading around would probably be another Samsung phone the "Behold 2", followed by the Nexus One... which brings me to my point (not the thread starters) of not being entirely happy with a samsung phone. This was my first samsung and most likely my last. They are not the only guys on the market and by the time most of us are ready for our upgrade there's gonna be a butt load of options to spend our money on.
