How do I get MMS without a data plan-VM Canada

If I have a Samsung GIO GTS5660M. I don't want to pay for a data plan (I'm usually in a WiFi area). Virgin Mobile Canada has a $25 Talk and Text plan which includes unlimited text and picture messaging. Data is pay-as-you-go.

How can I ensure that I do get data charges, but still be able to receive MMS?

Will changing my APN Type from Internet+MMS to MMS do this?

Cheers,

Uncle Andy

Actually this forum doesn't specify VM USA or elsewhere (even if the stickies are for VM USA). I will bring it up to the folks running the place as this post made me realize there isn't one for each when they are different companies.

As far as the OPs issue, I don't know for sure. VM in other countries operates much differently than in the US. You could try calling them to find out. You might get charged for the data for MMS if you don't have a data plan, in the US you have to use mobile data to get the MMS. This might be different in Canada (hopefully :))

If the plan includes unlimited picture messaging, isn't that what you'd use mms for? The only other use for mms I can think of that doesn't include pics would be sending a really long text message that would not be broken down into several parts. Other than that, you could use Viber (which I think is a solid app). Be advised that your friends would need Viber installed as well. Cheers!

I am not sure how VM Canada handles this. In the USA you must have the mobile data enabled to get MMS (i.e. you download it using 3G, you cannot do it over wifi). I do understand that it is included in his plan, but not sure how that company handles MMS. I would assume it would be included, but I have nothing to go on to say that for sure. More than likely VM Canada handles MMS differently. I guess I was just trying to say that in the US you can't get picture messages without using mobile data.

I can't say for sure, but I think it's done separately and they use different servers for MMS and Internet (that's why you have APN's for both). I'd presume that as long as you have no data going through their internet server, they wouldn't charge you?

I can't really say for sure though, you'd be best placed to phone them I think.

Making your APN type MMS only should stop all non-MMS data, as far as I know. The easiest way to test that would be to try connecting to something via mobile data once you've changed it.

As for whether or not Virgin media charge for MMS data usage, I'm guessing that they can differentiate between MMS and non-MMS data on their end. So if you're on the apropriate plan then you won't be charged for it. However, I agree with the others that your best bet is to ring them and check.
