Help Google Talk showing other people offline when they aren't

Anyone else notice this?

If I have a chat open, go to the homescreen and let the device sleep, when I come back to the chat later, it will show that person - and every other person with an open chat session as offline with the message that they are offline and will receive my message when they log in. Only, they aren't really offline. If I send a new message or use the back arrow at the top left to go back to the gtalk contact list, it will refresh all the contacts and show them as back online.

I run into this all the time. With some, my mom for example, it had to do with the settings on her phone. She had it set to show her as away or off line when the screen went off. Once I pointed out the setting, she is shown as online just about all the time. With others, I just send the message anyway so that they will get an email about my message when they get the time.

how do you configure your gtalk to set up for video chat? or do you just have to initiate the video chat in order for it to work?

When I got my Gnex, I (and my secondary account) was the only one showing up with a video chat option (camera next to contact name). However, as soon as one of my friends got the Gnex, the video chat option showed up for his contact.

Not sure why it seems to be restricted to just Gnexers, one of my other friends has the Tbolt (with front facing camera) and the option is not there. I feel like it should be.

Edit: To answer your question, not that I know of. I just clicked on the camera next to my friend's contact info and it called him up. Not sure how you would set it up if it's not showing you as available on someone else's list.

For some reason, the GNex is having trouble recognizing other phones that are capable of video chatting, and therefore GTalk won't give you the option to start a video chat with non-GNex phones. My wife has a Droid 3, and it will not let me initiate a video call with her, but she can intiate one with me and it works great. For the time being, you will just have to text the person you would like to chat with and tell them to start the chat, until Google resolves the problem.

I think it depends on what OS version the person is running. I have no problem with either of my parents who are using the Skyrocket, but I do see problems when they are on their Galaxy Tab.

Yeah I can initiate one with my Acer Iconia, but not with the Droid 3 so what you are saying makes sense.
