viewing zoomed in pictures

has anyone noticed that viewing picz while zoomed in displays really poor image quality? this only seems to happen in the 2.1 gallery. i noticed this way back when the apk for 2.1 gallery was released and i tried it out. double tapping to zoom in resulted in a very pixelated and low quality zoom while in regular 2.0 gallery, there was no problem. pics zoomed in still displayed crisp sharp quality. with all the custom roms nowadays, this problem is still there.

i'm using sholes 2.0.6 still, with my camera taking highest quality pics with highest resolution. i'm pretty sure this is just isolated to viewing pics in 2.1 gallery because if i viewed the same pics in camera mode, there's no problem.

no one else noticed this? is 2.1 gallery just broken like that or what?

That's the stuff that N1 guys are fighting about given the article about the 16-bit display by PCWorld. Apparently, within the Gallery App, pictures are looking 16-bit, but when pictures are opened in the browser, they look fine. Something is up with the Gallery app on 2.1. It may be something that CoolIris (the guys who developed the Gallery app for Google) compromised on and that's what you're seeing.

its a glitch. it works much like when you are in google earth and it zooms in on the image before adjusting it to that size.

Mine always adjusts after about one second. but lots of people have said theirs dont adjust.

try to get a new version, or grab the gallery from another rom.

where would i get one that doesn't glitch? or a rom for that matter? which one are you using?

I don't think this is fixed, even in Pete's 2.1 ROM based off the OTA update.

What I think is happening is, when you have a large image, it crops it to fit the Droid's screen, so 4:3 would be 640x480 pixels. Now, once you start zooming in on it, rather than go back to the original image, it zooms that 640x480 image.

That's my best guess. I dunno if that was intentional or not, but it's blatantly obvious if you put a really nice high res image that you know should be very clear zoomed up, and you see crappy pixelation.

I'm thinking it was a compromise by the devs. It does look like crap zoomed in. IIRC the old Gallery used the full rez when zoomed in.

right, the old gallery did not have a problem with this. only the new 2.1 3D gallery does. i don't understand why though. what changed? maybe something broke in the code? or is it intentional? because i don't understand why someone can't fix it. if it worked in 2.0, why not 2.1? seems like something isn't turned on or something. like the pic isn't reprocessing itself after zooming in.

It's not 'broken' code per se. What changed is everything. The 2.1 app is a totally different app, and was written by the CoolIris guys. If you've ever used the CoolIris web plugin, it's very similar to the app on our phones. The original app was a true Google coded app (I'm assuming). I believe the CoolIris devs made a compromise for the sake of speed. I'm sure it's something that could be fixed, but probably won't happen w/out enough complaining from end users.
