Root [HOW-TO] Simplified Root + Recovery + Custom ROM

So does the OP (im guessing means original post from reading all this LOL) support the Optimus V running Android Version 2.2.2, baseband VM670ZV5_60401001, kernel 2.6.32.9 lge@android-build #4, build number ZV5.41C0E845, and sw version VM670ZV5? Don't know if some of that info is irrelevant but I just wanted to make sure.

*edit* also do i need to put all these files in a certain folder on my sdcard or have them grouped together in a certain way or can i just put them right on the main part of the sdcard (like not in any folders just on the sdcard).

The two biggest differences between 2.2.1(which this was originally wrote for) and 2.2.2(which the OP rewrote for) is the 2.2.2's bootloader is locked, and on most 2.2.2 the screen is now a Hitachi. The OP has provided the recovery's that will work on both phones, and Gingerbreak works with any version as well. You have to make sure the ROM is compatible with your screen version as well or you might get a black screen. .

Did you do all this?

- Make sure USB debugging is enabled
- Make sure you have an SD card (formatted and) inserted
- Get the APK on the phone somehow, and install it
- Open the APK, press the root button
- Wait a few minutes. If there are no problems, the device will reboot (note that the reboot itself can take like 10 minutes due to cache wipe)
- Make sure the Superuser app is install and working

From here?

Yes that is where I downloaded it to my pc. I moved it to the phone's sd card and installed it with astro file manager. The app shows with my other apps so I am confident that it installed correctly. I turned on debugging, opened the app and pushed root and that's where I get the error message.

Total rooting noob here with some basic questions...

First of all... all I wanna do for now is root the phone. Can I follow just the rooting instructions part and skip the "Install custom recovery, & flash custom ROM" steps?

Windows Drivers for the Optimus V (Optional but suggested):
http://www.lg-phones.org/wp-content/uploads/LG-Optimus-V.zip

Why? What are the drivers used for?

The easiest way to root nowadays is to use GingerBreak. It can be found here:

[26.04.2011][v1.2] GingerBreak APK (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers

Instruction Steps:

1. Turn on USB Debugging (Settings - Applications - Development)
2. Copy the GingerBreak.apk to a /sdcard dir, then using a 'file manager' app (search for one in Android Market) install it like a regular app.
3. It can take up to 10 minutes, and will reboot automatically when complete (rooted), if attempt fails, reboot manually & run it again.

I have a question about step 2...
I have GingerBreak.apk on the SD card, and I am using Astro. How do I install GingerBreak.apk using Astro?

If I follow these steps, will my phone be rooted?

Also, I don't see anything about using a computer in the rooting instructions. But there is another thread on how to root without a computer so I'm assuming a computer is needed. So I need clarification on that as well.

Are you using the stock uSD card? I had a similar problem.
I pulled battery. Reinserted, powered on. Deleted app. Removed 8G card. Made sure to put 2G into PC and reformat 2G card. Installed into phone. Pulled battery, held power button 30 sec. Reinstalled battery.
Downloaded .apk from browser on phone. Moved from download folder and put on the root of sd card. Installed .apk onto phone. Ran app. After 12 min. Pulled Battery. Reinstalled battery. Ran the app again. Put phone down, walked away. 8 min later I herd the vm song, yeah.

after you are rooted you have root access to all your phones files. When you install a custom recovery it allows you to make a back up of your system (nandroid backup). If while deleting bloatware or anything else you accidentally delete something important and it messes up your phone the only way to fix it is to restore the nandroid. Without the nandroid =Brick.

Go ahead and follow the tutorial to the letter. Download AndroZip it's easier to use. To move, long press an item. Select the desired action. To install, tap an item. Select the desired action.

Thanks for the tip on AndroZip. I like it much better than Astro.

I'm still needing clarification on the relevance of the LG pc drivers to the rooting process, and what (if any) role a computer plays.

Thanks.

You don't need a PC. The download speeds are faster which means the downloaded files won't become corrupt. The LG drivers are needed to transfer to sd card without having to pull sd card out of phone.
You can just put sd card in pc.

awesome

thanks for clarifying

I just ran Gingerbreak but the exploit failed

(I rebooted manually but no superuser)

should I try again?

I tried it again this morning and it worked!

only had to try twice total so feeling pretty lucky - thanks for the encouragement

should I update superuser now (using the android market) before doing anything else?

some questions about the next step...
I downloaded both the recovery image and the flash image GUI files to the sd card...

the flash image GUI file is a zip file...
when I browse to it in AndroZip, what command should I choose? Extract?

Edit:
also, what's the difference between this and ClockworkMod Recovery?
