Expecting too much from a phone?

Hi, I was just thinking this morning after reading some posts and listening to some people here at work complain about their phones....

Are we getting to the point where we have such unreasonable expectations from our "phones".....

I will admit it's had not to start looking at the next latest and greatest thing that promises a faster cpu, bigger, better screen...yada, yada, yada and wonder if I made the right choice.

I love my Eris and what it does, is it perfect? For me right now, yes. Down the line when it's time to upgrade...who knows. I am not trying to start a war or get anyone all amped up....I just wanted to see if anyone else feels the same way?

Happy Thursday by the way!

Steve:)

I think a lot of it comes down to society. We are in a society that wants everything right here and right now. And if a device doesn't live up to every expectation (even though meeting all those expectations is just about impossible), it's the device's fault. I think the dissatisfaction lies more within the users than the makers of the devices or the devices themselves...

I agree with you for the most part. If you look through my posting history you will see I have not been a complainer or someone concerned with the 2.x update. That said, I think some of the problems and issues people have had with this phone are valid ... some have been fixed and some have not. Your right, bottom line this is a phone ... but I dont know anyone who uses it only as a phone.
I guess the way I look at it is that there are far more complaints than this phone deserves, and some people will never be happy. But lets not lump everyone together because some of the issues and problems are legit and should be fixed.

I wasn't trying to lump people together..I hope you didn't get that from my post..sorry if anyone did.

I agree, I don't use my Eris as just a phone either. I also agree, that it is not free from some issues either. I was just making a broad statement that even after people research the phone, know what the specs are, test drive it in the store or at home, they still are not happy.

I wish I knew what I was just going to say...I can't believe I just lost my train of thought...lol. Maybe we need a phone that would know my thoughts so that when I lost them, it would repeat them for me....sorry.

This forum is great, and I do appreciate all of the help I have received!!!

With the Eris as my first smartphone, I didn't really know what to expect. I've been pretty much amazed all along. From the customization possible from the start, to the possibilities presented by the Market, it's all been good. I do think people may expect too much from technology (not just phones) in general these days though. We've come a long way, but some folks today skipped a lot of steps that came in between.

See that's what I'm thinking. We have an entire generation running around acting as though everything must be instantaneous. I won't get started on my thoughts regarding work ethic and the entitlement mentality...

But yeah, that's what I mean. If you had had a TRS-80 for a first computer, like me, you'd think the the tech that's out there right now is incredible.

"OMG! My phone took .003 seconds longer to dial my mommy! OOOHHH NOOOOOO!!"

Yeah, most of them are probably people who didn't grow up with 2400 baud connections. :D

Grow up with 2400 baud? I had to wait to upgrade to 2400 baud, and my first (on-sale) 2400 modem still cost more than this phone. I think the 'net should have a 300 baud day every year, where everyone is throttled to that kind of speed, just so we can keep things in perspective. ;)

I agree that sometimes I am from a generation(the 90's) where I expect things to be instant and damn near instant...I don't think it's so much entitlement mentality because that would be me saying "This Eris should work because I'm Carmen & I'm the Sh*t". It's more so of me being impatient and i get annoyed when I'm ready but something or somebody is still quite a few seconds behind trying to catch up with me...

These first and foremost are phones...True...So i will say as a phone, the eris is perfect...I never have had any issues with the phone aspect of it...

My complaints and I am not going to rehash because I don't want to be a troll comes from the phone's perfofrmance...

I don't think it's completely wrong to expect so much out of these phones(Eris, Hero, droid, etc.) since they are marketed as "Phones with mini-computer mentality"

I don't expect my phone to be able to read my mind to know what I'm thinking before I do it but I do expect it's performance to be on par...

The irony of the situation is...sometimes it might take my internet 3-5 seconds to load a page and I don't complain...yet it takes my phone 3-5 seconds and I'm getting pissed :)

However, I do thing others are expecting this phone to replace their computer when they are not near the comp...

It's a good device it just wish/hope performance issues will be address sooner than later
