its likely user error.... i multitask with gtalk, andchat(irc) and pandora, also with the browser running, smooth as butter. i dont use a task killer either.

 Look around you. Anyone else having such a beautiful time? Nope. His issue is with ALL Eris phones. Don't pretend your MAGICALLY perfect phone doesn't experience his issues. Please. Its software issue. We all have same software, thus we all have same problems.

I'm realistic, love my Eris, hate it's issues. What I don't get are individuals who claim to have the "best" running phone of all the other ones injecting false claims in the forums for all to see. It's misleading and causes confusion. Not user error, HTC Error. Sorry to be brutal about it and it's not direct solely to your post but to others I have seen.

It's like if you ask an iPhone user how they like their phone what do they say? "The awesomeness phone EVER made MAN!" Mean while they're thinking to themselves, "I hate this phone, always drops calls, and the interenet is slow, and I can't run more than one thing at a time! AHHH!" Get what I'm saying? Why would they say such wonderful things while they feel differently. It's disingenuous, false information, to serve a self serving purpose or justification about a personal belief or yearning for something to be true.

Sorry again, re-read my post and it's REALLY brutally honest lol. Please don't get offended I'm not trying to cause a problem, just getting a point across.

really i am not having the lag you speak of once in a while i get split second lag while opening large apps, but usually my phone is lag free

the last few days i havent been able to get on the internet with my laptop, i use mobile broadband through sprint:eek::p lol. but anyways my laptop is rather old and all three of the usb ports are shot:(, so i have been depending on my eris to pull its weight as my gtalk, irc, pandora and browser so i can keep up with the forums.

the eris has proven well able to handle what i would expect from my pc. i did today have htc sense reload due to a f/c but that is a rare occasion, and i dont blame the phone, because of the stress i put on it by multitasking.

do i experience lag all the time...no! do i rarely experience minor split(up to a) second lag, yes only under heavy use. its not even worth complaining about, much less returning the phone . what do you expect from the phone its not the most highend (nexus, hd 2)?

believe me i have better things to do than lie about my phone around others that have the same phone . :)

Sounds like my experience too. Well, you know there are fan boys out there who will say just about anything to prop up their product. Thanks for the honesty and the civility in your reply. Night Night.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Well I am glad that somebody mentions my thought process as far as this phone goes..

It is a little unnerving when you read that people with the same phone, same software and NOBODY HAS ROOT experience a lot of lag and very little lag

My thoughts are about the eris

1)Beautiful Device
2)Small
3) Powerful...kinda
4)Horribly Slow...it's annoying as hell

It shouldn't take 5 seconds to open the market, 5 seconds to go to my downloads, 5 seconds to launch an application, 5 seconds to do this...to do that

I understand the processor is old, I understand the outdated software but i don't think it's fair to say it's user error that you experience lag

It may not be a high end device but it's hard to believe just around this time last year, the htc hero was the most popular android device out(until the droid) and the sprint hero/droid eris are reiterations of it...which leads me to wonder how crappy is the g1 because i heard this phone(and it's other versions) is alot faster and better...

I love my eris to death...but the speed of it kills me and it's ashame because I've resorted back to using my motorola droid for speed and having to compromise for it's looks....

And I wish what we all wish...for 2.1 to come so we can have the features and speed that guy had in that video we saw leaked

I've also just done a factory reset to test a theory

PAUSES TO TEST...

I originally had 60 apps(the htc ones included) and now i only have 3...

I truly don't understand all this, and I'd like others to post about it. I just opened Market, I timed it with my Seiko digital stop watch: .8 seconds.

I then opened Messages: 1.2 seconds.

Browser: 1.6 seconds

Weather: 2.4 seconds. Went back to it and pressed the update bar: 3.6 seconds.

My app load is likely less than the average Eris (or any other smart phone) user; all I have besides the battery widget are Astro, two games and "delete old messages" and the silly rotary dial gimmick.

I message a lot so I do two-day per week deletion in addition to clearing caches at those times.

okay well i didn't use a stop watch but i counted

Chomp: pressed about 4 seconds later it launches, Handcent: about 7 to launch and load
however messages launches almost automatically

I delete my text after every one hundred because of course i'm a teen so i text a lot...a couple of thousand a day so i have to constantly delete which is fine seeing how before android i had to delete after like 250 messages

Camera: 4 seconds to launch(However the recovery period between taking the pic, it loading and going to the next pic is MUCH faster)

Market: 5 seconds to launch another 3 to go to my downloads and another 3 to actually uninstall an app

Browser: The worse...it took 12 seconds to launch the browser and get it to google and then an additonal 10 seconds to actually search for droid eris on google

All in all...i can deal with a phone who is a second behind me but it seems like I am constantly waiting for her to catch up with me...

and eww i hope i dont sound like a troll because usually my posts are nice about the eris but the past 24 hours have been horrible

+1

The only time I experience lag on my phone is with the keyboard in landscape mode or when I am playing music, surfing, replying to email and gtalk all at the same time and I obviously don't use a task killer.

I really think that it breaks down to what people view as lag in some cases. I think some people expect a little too much from their phone. JMO

i can honestly say that i do experience the lag issues too. but it doesn't bother me much. this is the first smartphone i've ever owned and therefore i really have nothing to compare it to. i have played around with the droid and iphone and have to say that its way much faster, but what can i do? here i am stuck in a two year contract with verizon.

can't complain, just have to deal with what you got.

just my .02.

And a +1 to you, too.

Carmen reminded me of the camera, so I have my Seiko sitting here, next to my Eris.. pick up the Eris and touch the camera icon while touching the start button on the stop watch... pretty much instant: .6 seconds.

Are we talking load on the device here? Or are we talking about quality control at the factory? If mine (and others) are so much lagless than some posting complaints?

Just ran through a couple of time tests on my phone. I currently have 37 third party apps installed on my phone. I have 10 widgets running on my home screens and the battery is at 58% right now. I have no task killer installed on the phone. Prior to this test the phone was asleep for a minimum of ten minutes.

Times are recorded using a coworkers Rolex Submariner:

Browser: 5 seconds (open and load google)
Market: 2 seconds (open and fully load)
Gmail: 2 seconds (open and fully load)
Weather: 6 seconds (open and fully load)
People: 3 seconds (open with all pictures showing)
Albums: 5 seconds (open and all albums visible)
Barcode Scanner: 6 seconds (open and ready to scan)
Calendar: 2 seconds (open to full month view)
Camera: 5 seconds (open and ready to take picture)
Google Maps: 7 seconds (open and found my location)
Gtalk: 3 seconds (open and ready to chat)
Key Ring: 3 seconds (open and ready to find card)
Messages: 3 seconds (open and ready to text)
Music (app not widget): 2.5 seconds (open and ready to play)
Peep: 5 seconds (open and account loaded)
Settings: 2 seconds (open and ready)
Manage applications: 67 seconds (open w/ all icons and memory showing)

This is all 100% acceptable to me (obvious exception of manage apps taking over a minute, but what can you do). This is also the reason that I say that I don't have an issue with lag. My phone runs just fine.

Okay so I know what OTD's def of a lag
is...

Do you guys think that I'm making a BIG DEAL out of the times i posted in my last thread??

I truly do love the eris...and I really don't like the droid...I'm in the droid forums and it's apparent that that phone is more so a guy's phone

so do you guys think I'm complaining a bit too much about it?

I think Carmen's times are high. I have to wonder why it is taking her phone so long to open some of these apps. I do wonder if using a watch might change some of those though.

In some cases I think the times are going to be faster for people if they have less on their phone. It will also be faster if they have been using their phones for a bit before timing things. It will also change depending on what you have currently running in the background, if your apps are closed allt he way or if you are running a task killer.

I also have to say that some people may just have bad phones. There may be something that is just not running right on them. Bad chips, bad ram, bad rom, etc could cause a serious problem with someone's phone. Not bad enough to make it just stop, but bad enough to slow it down a whole bunch.

My apps open faster if they have been already recently opened. I'll tell you what I just noticed.

We were having terrible wind storms last night, so, unlike my usual practice, I actually shut my phone down and put it on the charger so that if we lost power, the phone would be as charged as possible in the morning. (Thankfully, though the lights blinked once or twice, we never lost power.)

Anyway, I just started the market for the first time today after restarting the phone. It took about three seconds until I could see the normal first screen, and an additional five to ten to complete updating so that the featured apps had icons in them. I then went home, went into a couple of other apps, went home, went into Market, and it appeared instantly.

The camera app (first open since restart) took five seconds until I could take a photo. The Browser opened instantly, but I am sure that is because I had it opened earlier today. I just restarted the camera - it was ready to snap in less than two seconds.

By the way, this seems almost completely similar to what I noticed while trying out my son's iPod Touch in the past - it seems to take as long to open up an app from hitting the icon in the home screen.

I have what I consider very minimal lag issues with my phone (and I am running no task killer/manager.) Lag issues have improved incredibly since I reduced the apps that do background notifications; well, removing my twitter app from doing background notifications. (It used to be set to check for updates every 30 minutes.) Before removing Seesmic notifications, I'd have some lag on power up every so often, including the annoying lag that happened when I received a call and the swipe down would not be recognized (and the same when trying to swipe the lockscreen when pressing the power button.) That no longer happens.

If those are real times (not questioning your honesty, but counting vs. actual watch;)) then I think you have a legitimate complaint with your phone. You may want to try letting the phone sleep for a while (10 - 20 min) and test everything with a watch/clock. See what your load times are at that point.

it likely is user error, but not necessarily their fault. Let me explain. The phone will allow you to install any number of "experience modifying" apps and widgets. There is discussion about battery drain and task killing and 2.0.......

If folks aren't really aware of the repercussions of installing apps and widgets, its real easy to get a ton on there and bog it down. But since the user put it on there, its hard to say its HTC fault, but at the same time, HTC/Android allowed it to get bogged down by not limiting software at all. They do this to make sure we get the functionality, but we do so "at our own risk"

at the end of the day, for me, it comes down to "what do i really need". I got the phone a few weeks ago, and started filling my screens with widgets and apps. Since then, i dropped down to 3 screens, and fewer apps (especially OS modifying apps, like ATK and spare parts) and almost use no widgets excepts the toggles. I had a bunch of crap on there that sounded good or cool, but i knew i wouldn't probably use.

Lots of the things i no longer use probably don't effect battery or lag too much, but the mindset of setting it up a little cleaner seems to make my phone run more efficiently, with good battery life. The nature of the phone (since its not a dumb phone, more like a laptop miniaturized) requires a slightly different technique for use.

my $0.02 :)

edit: now that said, if ur phone STARTED that laggy, or is that laggy after a factory rest, then yeah, sounds like a problem

Carmen, I'm going to chuckle in your general direction now...
Is 3 seconds to install a new app a 'lag' in your opinion, or were you just stating how long it took? Considering that the application has to come from somewhere (might be the UK, the US, China - who knows where it is) travel through hundreds(thousands?) of miles of wire, maybe bounce off a satellite or two, then radio-wave itself down to your phone, passing through clouds, rain, buildings and your body to be downloaded into your phone, and THEN it actually starts the install process in your phone.
Maybe it's just me, but I'm OK waiting a few seconds for all of that to happen. :)
Of course, I'm an old fart, I remember 300 baud modems and dial-up connections...
(yes I know, the 300 baud modem reference will be lost on many here, but the other old farts will remember them too - perhaps not fondly)
