phone memory/storage

There are 3 areas of memory/storage on this phone (assuming an installed external sd)

1) system storage (listed as 1.07 GB)
2) usb storage (internal sd) (listed as 1.62GB)
3) sd card (external sd)

All apps are initially installed in the main system storage but many have the option to move to sd card but it is moved to the usb internal sd storage area, not the external card. but , since its all internal storage anyway, whats the advantage of moving apps to sd? unless of course you are app crazy and fill up the main storage area. does moving apps to the usb internal sd storage improve phone performance in any way?

I don't think so, but as you have mentioned, yes it does free up the "internal/system" storage.

Previous to owning the Samsung Exhibit II 4G I owned a Huawei Ascend (through cricKet) and this phone had hardly any internal memory for storage. So we (I say we as the forum here for that phone is an amazing resource and I got the phone when it first came out and a lot of us there had to 'figure it out' and it really felt like a family) used the method of transferring apps to the external SD memory card.

In the case of the Samsunge Exhibit II 4G ... I'm not sure this is really needed. We seem to have a lot of internal room so I'm not sure if we really need to switch over any apps to the external SD memory card.

I'll use my own phone as an example. Bear in mind I have a TON of apps installed.

Internal Memory: 1092.52MB Max with 633.32 Free
Internal SD card: 1653.78MB Max with 1269.96MB Free

This information was taken from an app I installed called "Android System Info"

Anyway as you can see there is still a lot of free space.

So I don't think internal storage space is a problem with this phone. Having said that I do think this phone has a weak point and that is the amount of RAM ... it's really not enough. Well most of the time I guess it is but once in a while I get a lil bit of slow down or lag and I suspect this is due to the amount of RAM that is free.

For instance right now "Android System Info" is telling me that out of 355MB RAM I only hae 30MB Free. I'm not computer whiz or expert on Android but I'm pretty sure Android (the OS itself) needs at least SOME free RAM to operate properly and I think the lag I sometimes see is due to how little free RAM that I sometimes have free.

There is a lot of ongoing debate on the android community about task killers (apps that kill running applications and clear some RAM). People who seems to know the android system say that android already can free RAM automatically and efficiently (apparently this is especially true for Gingerbread and Ice cream sandwich) so basically you want most of your RAM full because it means your apps are already running in the background and you can call them really quickly when you need them.

That being said, there may be a difference between theory and practice. I would not be surprised that there is a threshold of free RAM to optimize efficiency (but is that 3MB, 100MB or more, I've got no clue). If there is no threshold, then 512MB is more than enough for current applications and the limitation is only the CPU speed and input/output data transmission.

For me, lag appears generally when I've been using the phone for some time so I would go for some free RAM is not bad.

came across this thread on XDA about a tweak that can increase your ram. many on the thread report that it does work but I haven't tried it yet. anyone want to try it and report back?

Thanks for quoting this thread. I read it and I'm tempted but it seems to perhaps have some issues and I'm not comfortable doing it right now.

Perhaps I'll try it out at some point but for now ... no.

I had the same problem. I found the program RAM Manager Pro, it seems to help quite a bit, expecially the non-killable launcher setting (I hate waiting for the launcher to redraw when I exit an app). I use the setting "Balance - More Free Memory" most of the time. I've gone from an average of 15MB free RAM to and Average of 80MB Free RAM, and my Exhibit II is much more responsive from what I can tell.

I'm having storage memory issues. Phone rooted, 8GB Adata c6 sd, everything movable to sd either APP2SD'ed or Link2SD'ed, cache cleared, Exhibit 4G usb driver installed. Maps, music, media, recordings are stored in SD.

When phone connected to pc (win7) i get
CARD 4.68GB free of 7.69GB
PHONE 101MB free of 1.61GB

in APP2SD Pro i get
Total: 1.07GB Avail: 827.78MB << this is phone storage

when select ON SD CARD tab i get
Total: 1.62GB Avail: 102.56MB

i removed SD card from the phone, tried with external usb reader, get
4.28GB free of 7.69GB

in APPLICATION MANAGER
253MB used 840MB free << phone
On SD card 1.5GB used 121MB free

I'm confused. Never partitioned sd card or phone memory, don't think rooting does anything like that. Any ideas?

ps - i don't text, no sms stored in my phone or sd.

I had recently given my phone for repairing. I had taken the backup of all my contacts onto the sd card. (.vcf format).

The phone was formated and upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2. Now when i try to put my sd card back (8GB having upto 5 gb data) my phone (SAMSUNG GALAXY 3 GT i5801) doesnt recognize it and gives the error message : "SD CARD BLANK OR HAS UNSUPPORTED FILE SYSTEM.

Is it because of the .vcf contacts imported onto the sd card ? this is what the guy at the service centre told. I dont find this logical.

has any one come across such a case wherein a perfectly workin sd card ceases to work/rge recognized ?

That's what it seems like. Is there a good custom rom that would take care of it or should i app2sd back to phone? So frustrating i don't know what to blame, gingerbread or samsung. some apps save data to "phone sd" instead of external sd and now i'm out of memory. Apps show sd directory folder but i couldn't tell whether it's external sd or "phone sd". Now i know. Not sure if it happened after rooting or normal for this phone/gingerbread.

Also need my voice recording and torrent downloading apps to save to external sd. Camera app saves stills/video to external sd.

There are no custom ROMS at this point for the Samsung Exhibit II 4G but there are some people working on doing this however it will probably be "some time" before we see a custom ROM come out.

Every voice rec app i have records to "phone SD" card and no way to change that. I now have 0 space left in phone SD. I suspect nothing caches to external SD, nothing records to external SD. Phone is useless. Waiting for a solution.

I'm new to the phone, but I'll make the suggestion anyway: While the app might record to phone SD, perhaps you can move the recordings off to microSD for playback? Just like you'd play back music files stored on the microSD.

I certainly hope so. Because I ordered the 32gb microSD, and would hope to store all my audio files there.

LOL i can't even record anything because recording apps auto shutdown when phone(sd) is low on space. My recordings are not short clips. at least 30 min to 2+ hrs (best quality).

Here's how LG OPTIMUS does it. Both lg and this POS have very good mics and i don't use my dedicated recorder anymore. LG has phone memory and SD. Recording apps record to SD. I transfer to PC. Exhibit makes every app think phone SD is THE SD card, and external SD... if i manage to load GPS or anything on it, still caches to phone SD. When i first loaded recording app i had plenty of space and was able to record long files. Then transferred or deleted. Not possible with little space i have left. Something needs to be done asap.

Guess what, I messed around with this for a week and finally found out that Astro file manager lets you change the storage settings on a rooted phone. Just select preferences ---> directory options ---> and change everything set as the mnt/sdcard to mnt/sdcard/external_sd. Problem solved

How does it make some of my audio recording apps like tape-a-talk or hi-q mp3 recorder write to external sd?
