Why pay for texting when you can just E-Mail text?

Any e-mail address in the world can send a text message. So why pay for a text plan when you already probably have data plan on your phone?

Not sure how much unlimited texts is now but I have an old plan which is $10 dollars a month for unlimited Verizon to Verizon; with 500 texts out of network. So, if I cancel texts on my cell phone plan I can just use the "mail" application that comes with the phone. Use my gmail account and send out texts to numbers and tell my friends when sending me a text just type "username@gmail.com". This way I receive texts from other people through my e-mail and I can also reply back with an e-mail which would really be like a text. You can text from your computer and cell phone.

Text via e-mail (for at&t users): 10-digit@txt.att.net

Text via e-mail (for Verizon users): 10-digit@vtext.com.

Very useful encase you want to save money. I am thinking about canceling texts on my plan. Maybe you all already knew this. I knew I could send pictures to my phone years ago before I even had a smart phone but I just realized this again and thought about canceling my text plan. What do you guys think?

The only problem, is when someone SENDS you a text, using your cell#. You also pay for incoming texts.
Yes but if the other person has texting you will not have to pay
txting is bundled with my plan so I'll take the ease of simply txting and not making all my friends enter in my email address into their dumb phones. but yes it would be a way around the txt plan charges

What's your plan if you don't mind me asking

I turned off my txt plan as soon as me the my wife got the ERIS. We just use Gtalk to txt, and anyone else I have them send txt's to my google voice number so they don't get confused with email addresses. (No charge)

Also what I did is called verizon and had them turn on txt blocking, so if someone tries to txt my verizon number I do not get charged... then they just call me and ask why I cant get txt's (if they txt you they get a responce saying it is blocked) and I just explain how to txt me on my other number... I may just start giving out my google voice number...

Alltel's Smartchoice plan (unlimted txt on add a lines and 7pm nights). Verizon has been trying to get me off of there but I won't give it up until they pry the cell phone outta my cold dead arthritic txting fingers ;) or until prices drop enough to make me wanna switch.

Yup, I'm on the same plan I think. Last time I was in the store, the guy was like, 'You know you're not getting the full benefits of a Verizon plan, let's see what we can do.' You can drop your prices, that's what you can do. Until then, I'm happy being 'between providers.'
Sorry for getting off topic.
I would like to try GVoice, but since we have the plan, it is also not necessary for now.

Problem is, when I send an email to Verizon text it limits me to... 130 characters, I think.

How is that not a problem for you guys? Sure, you can break your longer texts into multiple messages, but is that not quite inconvenient? Or am I missing something?

Never really was a problem with me. Its an inherent limitation of SMS on GSM phones, so I've gotten pretty good at keeping my messages short. :D

Still, I have normal texting, so its no big deal.

If I need to convey a message that long, especially to someone with a phone, I call them. It's a really cool feature they've added to phones lately...
