Anyone have any information about a new GV revision or a new gmail app that would allow gmail calling on your phone over wifi or 3g. I have made several voice call from gmail with great success. Porting this functionality ot android seem like the next step. Calls over wifi you make my day.

Thanks

I've been making google voice calls for the last month with no extra charge to me. since I have unlimited data... I guess each person will have to try for themselves to see if their network allows it.

Google Voice dials an access number to place calls, so it isn't using data to make calls...it's using minutes. Eh?

Odd, I haven't been getting billed for any minutes, nor have any unknown numbers shown up on my bills. Maybe my provider just bills differently?

Edit: Went to double check, and of course for the last 30 minutes they've said they're updating and to check back in 5 minutes.

I was wondering this myself. First off, the voice calling functionality is not tied to Google Voice (at least, you do not need a Google Voice account to us it). If you do tie it to your Google Voice account by setting Gtalk as one of your forwarding phones, then you can receive calls right in Gmail.

I have not tried it yet, but it seems like you could set your Android browser to show the regular internet sites instead of the mobile version? You might need to use dolphin browser or something where you can set the user agent string, or it might just work by telling the stock browser to not display the mobile version of websites. Then you would have the full gmail screen and could make calls that way, via your data connection.

When I tried to use the voice feature on the desktop email, I had to install software on my computer. I forget what it is called, something like Google Talk plugin. Since that software cannot be installed on an Android device, I am guessing even if you got the "regular" gmail page on your Android phone, it would still not work.

I accessed the regular gmail page and there was no "call phone" tab. :(

I know I'm bringing up a dead topic here, but I've searched around and haven't found any answers... Do calls work when removing the sim and using wifi?
No, GV isn't a VOIP solution. It uses your carrier's voice network to place and receive calls. No SIM = no carrier network.

Didn't see the dates on posts in this thread but, oh well, I'll leave my replies here for anyone else that runs across this thread:

Not what the OP is asking about. GV isn't a VOIP solution.

So now I'm kinda wondering what the point of the Google voice app is, aside from having two phone numbers for your phone.
To use all the feature of GV available via the GV app. The point depends on your needs/wants. No one can tell you what the point is for you. That's for you to determine. There are GV guides all across the internet and a number of existing GV threads you can refer to if you're not familiar with GV.

The point of GV for me has never been "2 numbers". I only give out my GV number. Inbound call handling, an effective SMS "backup", multiple phone ring, VM transcription, number virtualization (no need to port) and being able to use the GV web site's features from any PC are all my reasons. YMMV, of course.

Okay, time to update this thread.

Call phones from Gmail

Free calls through Gmail in the domestic US and Canada for 2012

I'm almost out of minutes on my plan, but have tons of bandwidth allowance left.

I'm going to try and figure out a way to do this through my Optimus V, but if anyone has the trick way to do it, please say so.

That is only for your computer. You cannot utilize that from your phone.

I've been using the GrooVe IP app to do this. Its not free, but for $4.99 it lets the google voice app use 3g/4g or wifi to place calls from your GV number. I've installed it on our old MT3G, it was left vacant after our last handset upgrade. Now we have a spare wifi phone with its own GV number for ZERO monthly $.

There is also a free app from netTALK that allows for free USA calls but has no inbound or phone number. This app works great on iOS and a Sensation, but doesn't seem to like the MT3G.
