Rogers to skip Gingerbread for Ice Cream Sandwich?

Anyone heard about Gingerbread updates for any of the newer phones? My new Optimus 3d came with Froyo (just 2.2.2, not even the 2.2.3 update is avail to us yet). I saw on another forum that someone had spoken to Rogers and LG (with the usual mutual fingerpointing), and that LG told him that Rogers was being difficult and was going to skip any further Froyo updates as well as Gingerbread for the LG Optimus 3D (and company) and wait for Ice Cream Sandwich. That seems in line with LG's recent announcement (26 Dec on Facebook):

During the second quarter of 2012 upgrades will begin for the following smartphone models: the LG Optimus LTE, Prada phone by LG 3.0, the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus Sol, the LG my Touch Q and the LG Eclipse. These upgrades will be followed by upgrades for the following smartphone models during the third quarter of 2012: the LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus Black, the LG Optimus Big, the LG Optimus Q2 and the LG Optimus EX.

LG will be taking all possible measure to offer a smooth OS upgrade in a timely manner. The exact start dates can vary by market, as each country can have different requirements, depending on the carrier and the smartphone model.

Since even optimistically we won't see 4.0 until late next summer (having lived through the Rogers HTC Dream to Magic fiasco and then getting 2.1 rather than the 2.2 everyone else seemed to get, I am not really optimistic), it would be nice to get some version of 2.3 while we wait.

Glad to find out that the info was wrong. 2.3.5 was released for the Rogers LG Optimus 3d last week. However, it isn't easy to find. As near as I can tell, it is only available by using the 'LG Mobile Update' or 'LG PC Suite' programs. I ran into a few glitches along the way, but it finally worked - and I didn't lose my data.

Too early to tell how good the update is, but the 2d to 3d game converter already seems kinda cool. The other claims about improved download speeds, better video, battery life, etc, well time will tell.

Fingers crossed we still get ICS later this year.

Maybe maybe not. It's not just Rogers delaying the updates it's also the manufacturer. They have to build and test the ICS update with Rogers cash but they are the one in the end who decides if they are going to put all their coding force on this project or not.

HTC pulled this trick on the Dream/Magic era. We could read between the lines of their announcement that Rogers is not big enough for them to deploy a update to GB on those device even if they support it. They preferred to concentrate on the newer models.
